RECORD WORK IN SHIPYARDS.

One Has-Launched a War Craft Month Since Hostilities Began. LONDON, June 19 (by mail).—In the shipyards of Great Britain, where fleets are born, there has been tremendous activity since the commencement of the war, and the effort to provide the navy with all it requires has been stupendous.

James Bone gives a picturesque ac count of the wonderful work that has been accomplished. "When we speak of Germany's ihdustrial inventiveness and resource, he says, "we are apt to forget that she neither discovered the application of steam as a motive f6rce nor did she invent any of the great devices by which nations have been brought closer and time and space have been telescoped. The German navy exists only as the result of British inventions. "Now.in the great world-struggle all our shipbuilding resources of peace have been tremendously expanded for war. One yard alone has launched a. battleship, cruiser, torpedo boat destroyer, or submarine every month since the war began. One famous marine engine shop has produced 1,600-horse-power of machinery every day since the beginning of last year. "Wonderful engine shops, up to 1,000 yards in length, of cathedral height and spaciousness, splendidly lit with railways linking up every part of the organization, have sprung up in many parts."

Shoplifter Dropped 24 Pairs As He Ran From Police. CLEVELAND, July 1.—A fat man, a very fat man, whose clothes bulged queerly, wabbled slowly and carefully down Ontario street.

Protuberances here and there plainly spoiled the otherwise smooth fit of his garments. At High avenue southeast he stopped, pulled up his trousers a peg or two, tischtened his belt and proceeded. Detectives Arthur McFarland and Edward G. Long, marking his queer actions, tried to stop him. He recognized tiiem and fled and odd things began to happen.
