VAIESKA SUtATT IS HIT BY JGDINING
K Was Stage Lightiing, However, ond Valeska Had Jew Photo Made Theriby.
You who think that "Weska Suratt is one of these sophistfcated women, beyond powers of emoton, will be pleased to know that simething has been discovered whioh shaces the Terre Haute star to the very ciepths of her soul. It took Roland Vest, her director in the new William Fox picture, to make the great discovery. Incidentally, Roland himself was slightly moved.
In the last scene of th« photoplay, the villian is struck by ligitning. The company waited patiently tor a rough stormy night. When one »me, they were prepared.
A "set" near the studio ihowed the front of Miss Suratt's moving-picture bungalow. Before it stood s dead tree. On the porch of .the house, Curtis Benton, the villian, was stationed. In a boring in the tree, were eight sticks of dynamite.
Valeska Sits Securely.
The rain poured and the wind blew. Valeska Suratt sat safely beneath the studio roof, and watched the scene. Director Roland West jumped about attired in raincoat and galoshes. Curtis Benton stood drenched before the door of his loved one. The camera men were grinding fast and furiously. Then the dynamite was touched off.
Curtis Benton fell on his face, with tho dead tree-trunk impending above him. The glass of the bungalow windows flew scattering all over the place. A corner of Mr. West's pet camera went over the Palisades into the Hudson. A chip hit Roland West on the chest and sent him sprawling. Far off in the fields, a property-man, on his joyful way home, stumbled across a wire. He fell flat, and lay quite still, yelling that liis legs had been blown off.
Inside the studio a scene-shifter, who was telling his wife, via telephone, that work was keeping him late that night, was told that she knew better. She had heard the noise, and knew that he was with that poker crowd again.
Valeska is Overthrown.
And Valeska Suratt? At the first blast, her chair had gone over backwards, and. Miss Suratt, the heartless adventuress of a dozen plays and pictures, was moved. Donald Buchanan, gallant scenario writer, rushed to her aid. He ^a.s too hasty and fell acrow the chair/ the fallen heroine,

and the floor. Everyone within earshot heard Valeska's shrieks, and rushed to the rescue. If a camera had been handy, one of the greatest mob scenes in the history of filmdom would have been snapped.
Meanwhile Curtis Benton lay beneath the tree in the pouring rain. The property man was yelling in the fields.
