SAYS CHURCH IS NOT APPRECIATED BY MANY
lev. T. J. Everett Asserts Devastation of Soul Caused Christian Faith to he Scattered.
Rev. T. J. Everett discussed "An Jnafcpreciated Blessing" Sunday eveling at the Fourth Avenue M. E. hurch. The topic was taken from icts 8:3, "As for Saul, he made havoc 'f the church." He said: "Which works the greater havoc of he church—persecution or indiffernce? Saul wrought havoc by persecution. He devastated the church yet aused far less harm than one would •oppose. He scattered Christians, but iverywhere they went they were the •earless heralds of the new faith. Inlividuals suffered, but the church grew a result of the persecutor's activiies. "The church is today in far greater langer from the indifference and negect of those who should be its friends. [To believe in the church but to neglect ts services—to give it a place in our ives, but a place second to business hleasure or self-indulgence is to work lavoc of the church in the modern way! Do we appreciate the church— [what its privileges have cost, what its luission to humanity has meant in plessing? Do we appreciate it as our [fathers^did or .as we ourselves would jivere we suddenly deprived of'its bene'flts? "The church is today to multitudes in unappreciated blessing. They are like the "farmer who for years earned out a doubtful living and did not realize that buried in that farm were rich reins of coal—enough to make him independent the remainder of his life. 0, the undiscovered riches of the church of God! Why are our homes different from those of the pagan and the sdvage? The church has brought its message of enlightenment and made possible the Christian home. The church is the handmaid of science. Dr. Jieadlaid of China in conversation with a New York business man said, 'Your tooth is saved by the gospel.' 'What do you mean?' he asked. 'I mean,' said Headland/ 'that you can not find a dentist anywhere in the nonChristian world that can fill and save a decaying tooth.' Even the hardheaded business man appreciated that practical application of the mission of the Christian church. "The church is a patron of education. China has asked for modern learning, but not till the church has sent its missionaries there to found Christian Bchools. "The church is the herald of the
Savior and the revealer of the future life. We who are enjoying fche unnumbered blessings of the Christian church should awake to a larger and more practical appreciation of its beneficent mission."

One half are engaged in exhibition flying. These could be sent to the army aviation schools, which should be promptly established. Railroads Aid Religion.
"Railroads have a religious misson. ^Vlore progress has been made in world evangelism in the last hundred years, during the era of railroads than in all previous centuries. Modern missionary enterprise runs parallel with the growth of railroads. "These departed brothers, in the honor of whose memory we plan this service tonight, were knights of civilzation and human prqgress. They contributed largely to the upbuilding of our material civilization. They had a substantial part in the socialization of our country. They helped to humanize industry. While others were talking about soiial values, they were actually getting the. people together. Consciously or unconsciously they helped to spread democracy. They

Rev. Manfred Wright Delivers Memorial Address for Employes of Steam Lines at Montrose.
The Rev. Manfred C. Wright delivered the Railroad Mean's memorial sermon at the Montrose Methodist church Sunday evening, taking for his text, "They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way. Then He led them forth in the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation." Psalms 107:5-7. In his address the speaker said In part: "The problem of transportation Is one of the la,rge problems of human progress. Anciently it was done by caravans which sometimes got lost In the desert. Such is the picture In the 107th Psalm, and such is an allegory of life. Primitive man was handicapped by lack of transportation facilities and the answer of this need is modern' railways spanning continents and girdling the earth. When railroads came a new milestone was registered and humanity scheduled for a distinct advance. "Material expansion followed. Wildernesses were redeemed to productivity. The northwest was opened. J. J. Hill became the builder of an empire by the use of steam and steel rails. The Siberian railroad opened' up the resources of a continent. "Railroads figure largely in war. The moving of troops and. munitions depends on train service. The early Russian drives failed through railroad inefficiency. Measured by transportation and industrial efficiency America Is the best prepared nation on earth, 'the time fast approaches when the increasing efficency of these two factors alone will render war absolutely prohibitive on account of vast release of destructive forces and havoc of slaughter. Then the railroads will help to bring in universal peace. "Railroads spread democracy. Traveling used to be a luxury indulged in by crowned heads and aristocrats. Now rapid and easy transit facilitates intercommunication and visitation so that oppressed Inhabitants of monarchies freely imbibe the freedom enjoyed by democratic states. When railroads were invented, therefore, monarchies and aristocracies were doomed.

helped on religious progress. The lowliest section hand literally fulfills ancient prophecy in building highways for our God. Railroad builders, working ostensibly to further commerce, are guiding spiritual forces. Car builders are modern chariot builders for the kingdom. Builders of locomotives are workers of the iron age of Daniel's prophecy, which in God's providence will usher in the age of gold.

world progress is fully told their part should have monumental place. "Railroad men should find the right road and make sure schedule for heaven. They find constant suggestion in their work of the importance of getting the right start to reach the Eternal City. The tragedy of a railroad man's spiritual destruction would be the most tragic of all. They guide others their business is to get others over the road. How pathetic if they themselves should fail of reaching the Union StaT tion. The danger of their task should charge them to be ready for the heavenly call."

NEW YORK, June 19—The death of General Joseph S. Gallieni, former minister of war of France, was due to a murderous attack by a French
Gustave Hesleuln, an attache of the French office, here for the second time on a government mission, would neither affirm or deny the tale.
General Gallieni waB shot and fatally wounded in his Paris office, the arrival from France said. He was closeted with the officer, according to their story, when attendants heard a shot and rushed in to find the "savior of Paris" lying upon the floor unconsciouB with his caller standing over him, a smoking revolver in his hand. The general after an illness of three weeks died on May 27.
General Gallieni's assailant was arrested, the Lafayette's passengers said, and his fate is unknown. He had been summoned before his chief, it is said, to answer the charge of having negotiated with the Germans for the surrender of a fortress at Verdun.
