WHITE SEASON THIS, SHOP WINDOWS HINT

Things New In Ribbons, Purbellows and Shoes That Greet the Spring.

By Noph Ragsdale.

What'11 we use to give dainty finishing effects to the summer dresses of flimsy, filmy material? The manufacturer has seen well to that and has given Terre Haute merchartts perhaps the most beautiful lines of laces they hav© ever carried. There is nothing more attractive nor better suited to tl|p gowns of the coming season than the Venice edgings and insertions of light weight. They come in all desired designs and are in a width suitfa'l to the purpose for which they are intended. Other laces being displayed are equally as good and pleasing in their effect.

Now is the season of ribbons. Graduates and brides and commencements are causing business at the ribbon counters to flourish. Class colors for aecorations ^nd individual use are being- created into beautiful designs a»- the counters while sashes for graduates and bridesmaids and streamers for elaborate luncheon tables are receiving their full share of attention.

Among the season's showing of one local shop is found a wide variety of ribbons, ranging from the deep tones of onevcolor blending into the softer ones of another to stripes, plaids and floral designs. One piece displayed is of brown which gradually merges into a wonderful American Beauty shade. It is about eight or ten inches in width. Another wide ribbon has a ground of cadet blue with rose, green and black stripes. Then we find all of the delicate shades woven into ribbons bearing dainty flowers.

And while we're talking shoes so much for the grown-ups, let us not fcrget that it will be a very good white season for the kiddies. Many stores are showing white canvas and buckskin in both shoes and slippers for the little folks. Many of the shoes for dress-up occasions are of patent leather (bottoms and white kid tops, Quite striking with dainty little summer frocks.

RAH HEAD BLOCKS QUIZ. Refuses to Name Men Who Received Campaign Contributions.

WASHINGTON, May 4.—Milton H. Smith, president of the Louisville & Nashville railroad, testifying today at the interstate commerce commission's investigation of the road's affairs, declined to answer any question concerning campaign contributions by the railroad to political parties or candidates in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama or elsewhere. He refused on advise of his counsel who held that the commission had no authority to make such inquiries under the senate resolution directing the investigation. "The railroad itself has nothing to fear," said E. S. Jouett, one of the attorneys, "in making public its campaign contributions. It is within its right, however, in refusing to do so. Bedsides, publication of the contributions would embarrass some of our good friends in the south—honorable, fair minded men who are favorable to our interests."

Joseph W. Folk, chief- counsel for the commission, announced the commission would appeal to the courts to compel Mr. Smith to give the information.

BEING A REAL CHRISTIAN.

Rev. C. I. Roush Takes Interesting Topic In' Revival. "Love must be the propelling- force of ths Christian's life or his religion is in vain, and he still is in sin," was the keynote of the sermon delivered by the Rev. C. I. Roush, pastor of the Barbour Avenue United Brethren church, in the series of revival' services Wednesday night, the subject of which was "In the World. But Not of It."

Rev. Roush' said being a Protestant, living in America, subscribing to a creed, or making a profession does not make a christian. Ha said the real christian wears his badge in his heart and not on his coat lapel, and that religion was not worth much without love In it and that love is the fruit of the spirit and grows on the topmost branches of the tree of life.

NATURE FAKIR, HABDLY.

Edward R. Smith, living east of Riley, called The Tribune Thursday to say that he had captureH a bird the like of which he never saw. He said it looked like a cross between an owl and a chicken and cackled a good deal like a hen. He thought it was one of Mr. Roosevelt's new found birds, but it doesn't wear whiskers.

TRAVELERS SPBING PARTY. A circular letter has been received by the ladies1 of the members of Terre Haute council, United Commercial Travelers, announcing the May festival and spring garden party to be held at the Hotel Deming on Saturday evening at 6:30 o'clock. The members of the local order have dedicated this party especially to the ladies.

NOT SO MANY SPITTERS. "I see," said Manager Grover of the traction company, "where there is new campaign on against spitting. We don't have half the trouble we used to in this regard. Men passengers seldom expectorate on the car floors any more. The health signs have been a great lesson."

SHE TOLD HER NEIGHBOR. "I told a neighbor whose very young child had croup about Foley's Honey and Tar," writes Mrs. Reh^amp, 2404 Herman St., Covington, ®Ky. "She thought that the child surely would die it was so bad. When she gave it a couple of doses of Foley's Honey and Tar she was so pleased with the change i she did not know what to say." This
