H«^d Preliminary Meeting to Take tip Demands of 300,000 Employes of Many Lines.

CHICAGO, April 27.—Seven men representing approximately 250,000 miles of railroad and 300,000 train service employes met in Chicago to make arrangements for conference to be held later over the eight-hour day and time and a half overtime demands made by the railroad brotherhoods. The meeting, which is expected to settle the time and place for further negotions, was held at the local headquarters of the western railroads. J. W. Hlggiijg, of Chickgo, J. G. Waiber, of New York, and Charles P. Neill, of ^Washington, represented respectively the western, eastern and southeastern tines. W. G. Lee, "president of the trainmen's brotherhood, W. S. Stone of the engineers, W. S. Carter of the firemen, and A. B. Garretson of the conductors, represent the men of their respective brotherhoods.

The ultimatum of the' employes, demanding a written reply to the revision of the. schedules handed thie railroads several weeks ago, expires Saturday. It is stated, however, by officials of the General Managers' association, that practicfilly all of the railroads have answered the demands already. It is ssud refusal of the demands by the railroads has been universal.

Neither side has shown any disposition to arbitrate its differences.

By Special Correspondent. PARIS, HI., April 27.—Hints that at least one more warrant might be is sued in connection with the Sudduth shooting, on Monday of this week, .vere given out at the office of State's Attorney W. H. Hickman today.

Stephen Sudduth, the son who was scuffling overj the shot gun, Is already in Jail awaiting a preliminary hearing before Justice T. J. Davis. His wife also had hold of the gun in the scuffle and it is believed the state's attorney may be working on the theory that she too, may' have had something to do with the killing.

Stephen Sudduth appears to be little worried in his cell in the county jail, He declares he is innocent of any crime. At first he refused to see lawyer, but later in the day called for Attorney W. H. Clinton, who had de fended him in other troubles several years ago.

J. Whitson Gives Bond.

By Spec^l Correspondent. PARIS, 111., April 27.—James Whitson, arrested on a state charge of selling liquor in anti-saloon territory, tfas arrested on a federal charge of selling liquor without a government licenste yesterday and arraigned before United States Commissioner George F. Howard. He was held to the next term of the, federal grand jury under bond of $500, which was signed by E. G. Simpson.

By Special Correspondent. PARIS, 111., April 27.—By a vote of 264 t? 37, the proposition to build a township high school at Metcalfe, 111., in the north part of Edgar county, carried at an election this week. Work will start on the new building some time this summer.

by Mrs. Ragsdale

Dear Mrs. Ragsdale—"I have just moved here from Jasonville and do not know ballroom etiquette. Will please tell me just, what to say w' I accept a dance. When a young man

•RS

asks me for a dance I do not know just how to answer. Then when that dance is through what should I say when he seats me? Is it necessary to thank him? "Could you give, me, through your column, a -harmless recipe for enlarging the neck and arms? I am So thTn I cannot wear the pretty summer waiBts. I always read your depart ment in the paper and have received much help from it. "NETTIE.'

A.—No, you don't always read Jt, or you would not be asking all those dance questions. It hasn't been a week ago since I answered these very things. When a young man ^sks you for a dance, say "Yes, thank you," or'words to that effect. After the dance, it is he who thanKs you, and you might say that you, too, had enjoyed the .dance. There is no set form to follow in such cases. Do and say the natural things and you'll come out all right.

I know of no harmless recipe excepf persistent massage. Cocoa butter is very beneficial in this. You can't expect results in a week or two, but you must keep continually at it-

Dear Mrs. Ragsdale—"Tne boys and girls of our school are having a clash over the commencement colors. The boys -want the bright ones and the girls pale pinks and blues, and the like We can't seem to agree at all. Of course, there are- so many more girls than boys that the gjrls will win out in a vote, but would that be exactlyfair? "PUPIL."

A.—Why not compromise and get a combination of one bright .color with another of delicate tint? Then both boys and girls would be suited. I "know a class, which, for this very reason, one time chose red and white. There are numerous combinations that could be worked out and I think your teacher would be very glad to help you with suggestions. It isn't quite fair to cut the boys' desires entirely out, any more than it would be to ivishes of the girls.
