BABIES TAKE TOWN CAPTURE THE STOKES

Juvenile Citizens Xn the Public Eye —Next Week Will Be Their Week.

By Nora Ragsdale.

Are the store? ready for "Baby Week" celebration? Well, you just bet they are! Take .1 look at some of the windows if you don't believe it! Early Thursday aft ernoon the Kleeman store was all ready for the ushering in of the week's program for babies. Its announcement was through the beautiful and artistic display in the west window.

Dozens of beautiful dolls represent the "Better Babies" which the govern ment is now turning its attention to. The window is arranged as a nursery for all the "tots' with a very busi ness^like nurse in complete charge. A card attached to the nurse announces "Watch this nurse come to life Satur day." It' leaked out Friday that there will" be a real live nurse—Miss Inez Church—in regular nurse's uniforjh presiding over things generally in the window Saturday.

Babies, Babies, Everywhere. A handsome bassinet containing a beautiful "baby," surrounded with playthings made for an infant and covered with handsome baby blankets immediately attracts attention. Anr other "tct" looks most cunning .tucked in a child's chair another resembles a real babe as it sits in a bath tub another toses before a mirror in a nandsome white enameled, cretonne-trim-med dresser others are "playing" with the beautiful rattles which will be given, awAy to all babes visiting the store, as souvenirs. These rattles are unusually attractive, being of eel luloid and representing a doll's head daintily tinted in blue and white.

m.

Baby's baskets finished complete pins of all-sorts for baby use little hand embroidered sacks and other garments mittens, bibs, and all the things contributing to a baby's health and happiness are displayed in this most unusual fashion, plainly showing that the merchants are glad to fall in line in co-operating with the government's Idea.

Pedestrians passing the Root store Friday morning were surprisedly halted by a tapping on the west display window. Investigation revealed a unique novelty representing in miniature the personage of Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam in characteristic! attire is stationed just inside the display win^ dow at the east side and as he raps on the window with one hand, he turns his head and points his finger to the display, calling attention to the fact that he is behind the movement for babies' welfare.

Tn his window also are dolls representing the small tots, oleverly arranged in various positions. One "youngster" is asleep in a beautiful white bed another is being cared for in the nurse's arms, and BO on. A real nursery, jhas been imitated in the preparation of this window, even to the paper. The attractive rattles in blue, pink and white, which the Root store is planning to give away as souvenirs, also are displayed in the windows, as well as the one hundred and one other things that the babies of America need. All babies visiting the infants' department next week will be given a, rattle and will ,be weighed, free of charge.

Lectures on Saturday.

Beginning Saturday, lectures will be given from 10 to 11 in the forenoons and 3 to 4 in the afternoons, by Dr. Madge Patton Stephens, on babies in thfc infants' department, which has been most attractively arranged for the week's observance. Dr. Stephens' program is as follows:

Saturday morning, "Child Welfare— What It Means afternoon, "Baby hood—Preparation for the B&byBaby's First Sunrise."

Monday morning, "The Nursing Baby," afternoon, "Baby's Comfort Through Clothes."

Tuesday morning, "Artifloial Feeding afternoon, "Prevention of Blindness."

Wednesday morning, "Teething and Weaning afternoon, "Cleanliness, Fresh Air and Sleep as Health Promoters.','

Thursday morning, {JHow the Normal Baby Grows afternoon, IDefects and Bad Habits."

Friday morning, "Ba,by's Ailments afternoon, "Child Labor and Child Crithes.'

The Herz store is about ready for Its window display as a tribute to the baby. Special attention will be given the two lectures pertaining to babies which will be given on Monday and Tulesday afternoons at 4 o'clock on the fourth, floor of the building. Physicians will give talks, the first Of which will Jbe "A Talk on Hygiene" and the second, "The Proper Care and Feeding." The physicians will have a nurse with them so that any mother wishing to ask questions or ner may do so.

Tickets for these lectures are being given out in. the infants' department Mothers are invited to visit the department and prooure tickets. A beautiful little 'booklet, "Baby's Health," compiled from departments

ing "Baby Week." Other Signs of the Time*. "For the boss of the house—the baby," a South Seventh street shop advertises the articles in its window display as this shop's contribution to the "Baby Week" celebration. "The boss of the house"—and father isn't in it this time—an entire week will be set apart in his honor. In that time, every vicinity will hear about this ruler of the household. Stores, churches", the library, clubs, schools, physicians, nurses, mothers, have all been drawn into the observance, and there will be something doing every day, beginning Saturday and extending to the following Saturday.

The churches—Jewish, Gentile, Catholic and Protestant—will start the ball rolling on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday evening at 8 o'oleck Miss Lela Gaddls, of Purdue univrsity, will talk in the Chamber of Commerce on the baby topic, using exhibits furnished by the university. Mrs. J. D. city, and a special invitation is extended to each and every one of them. Miss Gaddis will be,the guest of Miss Susan Ball while here.

Mere Man's Only Chance. Dr. E. B. Mumford, of Indianapolis, has been secured as the speaker for rally night, Thursday, the 9th. The rally will be held in the assembly hall of the Chamber of Commerce rooms. Dr. Mumford's topic wil be "Milk Stations and Other Conveniences for Children's Welfare." Those who have heard Dr. Mumford state that Terre Haute is very fortunate in procuring him. He will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Alden while here.

The rally }s the only meeting where the men are given a "look in" in this celebration, and a large number of them are expected to attend.

A letter has been received from the United States public health service that it has sent five hundred booklets on "The Care of the Baby." These books consist of but fourteen pages, but they are crammed full of well prepared information on babies. There will also be on hand for distribution several hundred leaflets, "The Care of the Baby," which will be given out at the community Centers. ^v MO$T U8F.D Al'TOS CHANGE HANDS

When you wash your hair, be careful what you use. Most soaps and prepared shampoos contain too much alkali, which is very injurious, as it dries the scalp and makes the hair brittle.

The best thing to use is just plain mulsified cocoanut oil, for this is pure and entirely greaseless. It's very cheap and beats the most expensive soaps or anything else all to pieces. You can get this at any drug store, and a few ounces will last the whole family for months.

Simply moisten thfe hair with water and rub it in, about a teaspoonful is all that is required. It makes an abundance of rich,' creamy lather, cleanses thoroughly, and rinses out easily.v The hair dries quickly and evenly, and is soft, fresh looking, bright, fluffy, wavy and easy to handle. Besides, it loosens and takes out every particle of dust, dirt and dandruff.
