PURDUE EXPECTS TO HAVE WINNER IN '16

Boilermakers Will Lose Some of Their Stars, But Classy Material is About Out.

LAFAYETTE, Ind., Nov.

Coach Andy Smith's work this season is regarded as very successful, despite the fact that Purdue lost to Wisconsin and Chicago. He had limited material, but he taught his men football, and his success in this particular was thoroughly demonstrated in the Indiana game. It is felt here that Indiana should have won but for Purdue's superior knowledge of the game.

The Boilermakers were outweighed more than ten pounds to the man. They played a defensive game most of the time, because they had been drilled to do iL Purdue depended upon Pults' line punting to keep Indiana out of the scoring zone, and the plan succeeded admirably. Each time Pults punted, Purdue gained ground, and each time Indiana punted Pults would run the ball back from ten to twenty yards. In this way Purdue kept the ball in the middle of the field, and only once or twice were the crimson players within striking distance of the Purdue goal. The fact that Indiana gained much more ground than Purdue shows the offensive strength of Coach Childs' men, and also shows the Boilermakers' success in keeping the crimson from scoring. Purdue feels that the work of Pults and Blocker was primarily responsible for the Purdue victory, although the entire team played in good style.

Coach Smith's contract with Purdue expires this year, and there was some talk of his giving up his work here. However, the students and alumni are strongly in favor of retaining him, and it is now felt that he will surely remain for another two years.

It is very likely that C. A- Buechner, of South Bend, left tackle on this year's eleven, will be captain of next

due's victory over Indiana in the closing game of the season greatly pleases all students and alumni of the universitv and already the followers of the Kpld and black are. looking forward to tSo season of 1916 with a feeling' of considerable satisfaction and an air of confluence that next year will bring unusual honors to Purdue on the gridiron. The team loses some of its best plf:yt-rs, trained veterans who have been responsible for the good showing the Boilermakers have made in this year's games, but it will have some excellent material from this year's freshman eleven, and the announcement that Dick Abrell, the brilliant halfback, who was out of the game all this season with injuries, is to return next year is reassuring' news.

year's team. Buechner has played a consistent game this season and is a popula: player. There is also talk of I'. H. Hake, of Gary, left end, beinggiven the honor, but in all probability Buechner will be chosen. Buechner i:? a junior also.

Captain Blocker. Purdue's great center, who played his last game for the gold and black Saturday, was awarded a place on Walter Eckersall's allconference eleven. He is the greatest center ever developed at Purdue since th early days of the game here. Pults, the star puntor and drop kicker, who also starred in the Indiana game, is another who completed his career at Purdue. The others on the Boilermaker team who have played their final game are Finn, quarterback Stinchheld, end Bishop, fullback Oxer, fullback, and Walter, halfback. This leaves for next yearns team the following regulars from this year's team: Buechner, Hake, Berns, Mason, Proud, Van A ken and Landis.

In addition to Abrell, the new material next year will include Hoffine, the big 1^5-pound halfback Bartlett. a star lineman Faucett, quarterback, and several others from the 1915 freshman eleven.

ARMY SORT OF CONFIDENT.

WEST POINT, N. Y„ Nov. 23.—The makeup of the Army football eleven which will meet the navy at New York Saturday will be determined during the practice hour tonight. Knight, the fast and husky "plebe," is putting up a good fight for left guard against O'Hare, the veteran. Knight weighs 192 pounds and O'Hare Is one pound heavier, but the coaches are looking for speed.

Although there appears to be a general air of confidcnce among the squad concerning the outcome of the game, Coach Daly declines to make any predictions, saying he preferred that the players "sit tight and worry."

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Nov. 23.—Navy's football squad again will have secret practice this afternoon. The coaches still are undecided as to whom they will place in four of the positions when the team lines up against the Army next Saturday. In consequence they have not been able to give as much time as they wished to polishing the rough spots in individual and team work.

GIBBONS EXPECTS BATTLE.

ST. PAUL. Minn., Nov. 23.—When Mike Gibbons gets back from a short deer hunt with his brother Tommy in the northern woods, he will begin a hard session of training for his match here Dec. 10 with Young Ahearn. It is pointed out here that Mike evidently has a lot of respect for Ahearn's ability, because lie was insistent for a time that the date of the light t-e set later In December.
