WILEY H. GETS BUSY AS UK DRAWS NEAR

Evidently Realizing Turkey Day Task South Siders Run Through Spirited Workout.

GARFIELD TEAM DOES LIKEWISE.

North Enders in Better Physical Condition Than Rivals—Officials Named for "Family

Row."

By Ralph H. White.

Evidently realizing the Turkey flay task before them, the Wiley high grid warriors got busy yesterday afternoon and tore through a spirited two hours' workout/ Under the whip hand or Coach "Jap" Davis, who was assisted by Joe Carter, Poly's brightest football luminary, the south siders displayed an abundance of "pep," but not the best staying quality in the world. There is no getting around it, the Wiley warriors are not in the best of physical condition and Garfield will have it on their local rivals Thursday in the matter of condition.

But work as they did, the south eiders didn't go through a more strenuous practice than did the north ender.?. Out bright and early Monday morning for a long drill at the ball park, the Garfield athletes repeated in the afternoon and are in absolutely tip top shape for the Thanksgiving day combat. Coach Clogston had the assistance of Art Nehf. former Poly star, yesterday and Garfield is expected to spring some new stuff on "VVemeke's aggregation at the ball park.

So, anyway you take it, the big local "family row" promises to be a sizzler. Wilev has the class, that much is admitted,, but Garfield is in better shape and the north enders have their backs to the wall. They have nothing to lose and all to groin. while Wiley has all to lose. There's also a sort of "we can't lose" spirit at Wiley which may wreck the splendid record of the BOuth side eleven.

Officials Are Xnmed,

The officials for the city championship affair have been selected. "Cully" Thomas, Butler college coach, will officiate as referee, with Fred F. Bays, of Sullivan, Ind., acting in the role of umpire. The timers will be Joe Carter and "Kootsie" Lammers. The game will start promptly at 3 o'clock.

The playing field at Athletic park promises to be perfect when the rival forces swing into action Thursday afternoon. The ground is hard and dry, making firm footing for the back field performers. The gridiron will be enclosed and only officials and newspaper men will be allowed inside the l'ence. Wiley will be in possession of the right field pavilion, while Garfield will control the grand stand and the west side of the field.

Little Giants and Coach Slieeks Get Big' Ovation—Team Has Clean Slate.

CRAWFORDSVII-LK, Ind.. Nov. 23.— Football fans of Crawfordsville find Wabash college, who .saw the Little Giants win the Indiana .secondary college championship at Indianapolis last Saturday by administering the crushing 34 to 0 defeat to DePauw, seem to be pretty well united in the opinion that this year's eleven is the equal, if indeed it is not the superior, of any that ever represented the Scarlet on the gridiron. It is admitted that tliei famous teams of 100G, 1007, 100S and 1009, contained some more brilliant individual players. However, i'o consistent team work and for spectacular ojenfiold play, the perfectly smooth running machine which Coach Paul P. Sheeks has developed in his first year at Wabash has not been surpassed.

BOWLING

Two of Garfield's Small Ones

DI3 PUG Hi PKRKI.VS.

Garfield high has in De Pugh and Perkins two very substantial linemen. Do Pugh weighs 280 pounds, while Perkins tips the beams at 186. Few holes have been found in their territory this season and Wiley high will likely avoid the "fat ones" as much as possible in Thursday's encounter at Athletic park.

Sheeks enabled his men to roll up the big score they did against DePauw. He sent his men into the clash instructed to play entirely a punting game in the first half and let the DePauw backs wear themselves out trying to buck the Wabash line. The Scarlet was then instructed to open up in the second half with forward passes and end runs combined. When Coach Young's men early in the game bucked the Scarlet line so desperately, oven though it was for short and steady gains, Sheeks knew victory was his. He knew his men were in condition to play a gruelling, strenuous game to the limit.

S'heeks and his players received a tremendous ovation on the campus and in chapel Monday. The coach is the hero of the campus today. He ie being hailed as Wabash's greatest coach. There have been Cayou, Harper, Thurber and Sheeks. But the greatest of these is Sheeks.

Wabash now has ten victories over DePauw to nine defeats and two tie games in the twenty-one contests played by these ati&ent athletic rivals.

Has Unbeaten Team.

Wabash this year has an unbeaten eleven. Only three times during the year was the team's goal line crossed. All three of these touchdowns were made in the closing minutes of the final quarters. Purdue. Butler and Northwestern each scored touchdowns against Wabash with less than a minute to play. In the Butler and Northwestern game, Wabash was playing entirely second string men when the markers were secured.

In the tight games played 1-v Wabash this season, the Scarlet rolled r.p a total of 236 points, an average o_ 29^ points a game. Her opponents scored a total of 3„ points. Twelve of tlief-e 33 were steered through drop kicks.

Franklin got away with three dropkicks due to the excellent booting of Overstreet, while Captain Lewis of Washington university, dropped one over the bar in the game here. The Scarlet's record follows':

October 2—Wabash, 7 Purdue, 7. October 9—Wabash, 38 Louisville, 0. October 16—Wabash, 13 Washington, 3.

October 23—Wabash, 40: Franklin, 9. October 30—Wabash, 35 Butler. 7. November 6—W abash, 34 Northwestern, 7.

November 13—Wabash. 35 Earlham, 0. November 20—Wabash, 34 DePaU'V, 0.

With the exception of Pfohl, who suffered a fractured rib, and Christian, who had his elbow dislocated, all of the men came through the DePauw game In good shape. Next year's captain will be elected by the *'W" men who will get together just as soon as the plaj-ers entitled to the coveted letter are selected. Canldwell, tackle, and Clements, full back, seem to be favored for the captaincy.

$20,000 Changes Hands

NEW YORK, Nov. 23.—Some $20,000 changed hands Monday when the official batting averages of the National league were announced. The money was bet on Larry Doyle, ol' the Giants, arid Luderi'.s, of the Phillies. The race for first place between the two was close and ha been in contsant dispute since the season closed. Doyle batted .320 and Luderus .315. One bet of $3,0U( to $1.00C is known to have been placed on Doyle, who is the first member of a New York club to win the battinp honors in twenty years.

NOIRE DAI BEST OF INDIANA TEAMS

Irish Stand Pre-eminent in Hoosier Field With Purdue or Wabash Second.

Notre Dame stands pre-eminent in the Indiana field, with good reasons lying on either side of the argument as to whether Purdue or Wabash should be ranked second in the state.

The "Irish" had an exceptionally good year, losing but one game and that by a single point. They decisively defeated Army and every other team, except Nebraska, and this week will play the last two games on their schedule, with Texas university and Rice Institute elevens. The Texaa game may be hard fought, but the one Saturday with Rice ought to be merely a romp for Coach Harper's second string men.

Wabash, under the intensive coaching system inaugurated by Paul Sheeks is the only undefeated eleven in the state. Individually the players are exceptionally hard tacklers—possibly the best In Indiana. Their work in that particular was a revelation to those wno have been rated higher. Their team play, especially against DePauw, was remarkably effective. The Scarlet's impressive victory over DePauw should settle, at least for another year, the question of which institution is superior on the gridiron.

Purdue, not blessed with an abun.l- I ance of beef or brawn, outgamed its opponents in every battle staged—except perhaps the one that was lost, to Kentucky State. The Boiler Makers succumbed to the powerful Wis-j consin and Chicago elevens only after, fights that were most bitter they came! from behind and won over Iowa in impressive style and, as a climax, outfought, outgeneraled and, in nearly every essential, outplayed Indiana. Their game Saturday proved the worth of "Andy" Smith as a tactician and an instructor of football players. He certainly has put Purdue on the "Big Nine" map.

Utile Giantn I,end. I

In the state, Wabash has run up the! greatest number of points on its oppo- I nents with a total of 202, Franklin second with 183, and DePauw, third with 159. Notre Dame has -been scored on the least only, having twenty points marked against it so tar this season. Wabash is second with thirty-three for their opponents and Rose Poly third with sixty-three. Eariham managed to have the greatest number of points made against them with a total of I 233.

Notre Dame Is in a class by itself this year, having played no state teams at all and is not considered in the following state table, which includes only secondary games:

Games Played

Won. 4 4 3

Wabash 4 DePauw 5 Rose Poly 4 Franklin 5 Eariham 6 Butler Hanover 4

IvOSt. 0 1 1 4 5 4

The Scarlet lias a clean title to the state secondary championship this year. Wabash went through the season with a clean slate, not only winning all secondary games, but being undefeated by any team played during the year. DePauw lost but one game, the title clash last f-'aturrlay, in Indianapolis. Hanover failed to win a game in the four secondary contests staged.

Harvard to Tackle Army Next Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 23.—Harvard probably will vary its football schedule for 191'J by resuming relations with West Point. The Crimson last met the Cadets in 1910, and wexe returned a victor by 6 to 0.

Harvard sought to bring West Point to Cambridge for a game this fall, and matters had been satisfactoryily arranged with the Army authorities when Washington stepped in and forbade the game. Harvard has obtained sanction for the contest on the plains next fall and the probable date is Oct. 2S.

Perm State is to be dropped, and so will Colby ar.d Carlisle. Virginia, Massachusetts Aggies. Cornell, Princetor., Brown and Yale, is the rest of the schedule.
