LOCALWOKAN MEETS DEFEAT INWARM RACE

Continued From Page One.

tered the room and, seeing a vacant chair at the head of the table, went to the place and sat down. She told the Terre Haute delegates that these things were the fortunes of politics and that they would have to give and take. The Terre Haute delegates refused to shake hands with her.

Her Club Record.

Mrs. Fairbank has been identified with club life for twenty-five years. She has been president of the Ft. Wayne Musicale for thirteen years and is a member of the Art association, the Equal Franchise league, the Women's Reading club ancl the D. A. She has been a widow for eight years.

Resolutions were adopted favoring th© conserving of Turkey Run and the old state house at Corydon, favoring the elimination of bill boards, the croation of a national holiday, June 10, commemorating the signing of the declaration of independence, instructing the United States commissioner of education to prepare a manual of education for foreigners and resolutions for a comprehensive public health program.

Next Convention.

The last important question to have been decided by the Indiana Federation of Women's Clubs, Friday, the closing day, was the convention place for next year. It rested between Terre Haute and Muncie, with neither town "pulling" exceptionally hard for it. Had Mrs. L. J. Cox been chosen president, great efforts would have been put forth to have brought it to Terre Haute.

Mrs. U. O. Cox, of Terre Haute, gave a report of the state charities committee Friday morning Hon. Amos Butler, of Indianapolis, president of the National Conference of Charities and Correction, gave a brief talk and Rev. Francis II. Gavisk, prominent Indianapolis priest, gave a short talk, also.

Very beautiful tributes were paid to the memory of Mrs. J. M. Tamilton and Mrs. Robert H. Strong, prominent federation workers who died during the past year, at the memorial service Friday morning.

Warm Fight Waged.

The question of double representation in the federation resulting from the admission of branch franchise leagues, caused another flare in the convention yesterday aftc-rnoon, when Mrs. E. A. Torrance of Evansville, the treasurer, brought up the question of the legality of votes cast by women from one district who have registered in another district and the program gave way to the most spirited arguments heard In the convention.

Cries from over the house insisted that no woman who comes from one district should vote in another, but when order was gained Mrs. Torrance explained that this could not be avoided if the franchise league was to maintain its votes, for the women representing the central league, which really is in the Seventh district, even though they represent branch leagues, must vote from the Seventh district.

Miss Newsom Explains.

Miss Vida Newsom, the president, explained that when the Franchise leagu© was taken Into the federation it was only one central league, but since that time others have been added MM branch leagues, causing, in her mind, a double representation of more than 1,000 members. This she declared illegal. Dr. Amelia R. Keller, president of th© state league, insisted that if the votes of the league were cast out then the votes of other clubs composed of affiliated organizations also must be cast out, but, she continued, as the federation has taken th© league into its membership and has accepted the dues, it must now stand by that decision. "If the proceeding is illegal and the board knew it, then why were the leagues admitted?" came a question from the floor. "There has been no meeting of the executive board since the branch leagues were admitted," replied Miss Newsom. "There was a meeting of the executive board only two days ago," insisted

Dr. Keller. "The time for such discussion is over," came again from the floor. "When the delegates were given their credentials and were seated in the convention their right to vote was established."

Merely a Technicality.

"This is merely a technicality," said Mrs. Robert A. Ogg of Greencastle. "The Franchise league is now a member of the federation and we must give them their votes."

In the meantime a motion had been made that Mrs. Torrance be allowed to correct the mistakes of delegates and put their votes into the proper districts and now came calls of "Question, question," from all over the house. The motion was put and carried with an overwhelming majority and the Franchise league was allowed its thirty-two votes.

Had th© vote been for throwing out the ballotB, no doubt there would have been an even greater stir for the question of double representation would then have been raised in other clubs whose delegates had cast tiiiir votes earlier in the day and the whole election would have been declared void.

Every Precaution Taken. With all the formality and precaution !n an election of the president of the United States, and probably more,

SCROFULA AND ALL HUMORS GIVE WAY

There are many things learned from experience and observation that the older generation should impress upon the younger. Among them is the fact that scrofula and other humors, which produce eczema, bolls, pimples and other eruptions, can be most successfully treated with Hood's Sarsaparilla.

This great medicine is a peculiar combination of remarkably effective blood-purifying and health-giving roots, barks and herbs, which are gathered especially for it.

Hood's Sarsaparilla has stood the test of forty years. Get a bottle today—now—from your nearest drug store. Always keep it on hand.

her name, which was verified by the tellers before her vote was carefully slipped into the mysterious box.

Campaigning Is Lively.

Everywhere in all the corridors about the convention hall, and even in the parlors on the second floor of the hotel all day long were whispering groups, discussing ways and means of "pulling" for a favorite candidate. While only one woman was admitted through the door of the election booth at a time, it was no uncommon sight to see a delegate carefully escorted to the top floor and given a last sweet smile as she vanished into the booth.
