WE ARB -T-HFIOUC ANT -READY

At The Movies

By Mique O'Brien.

Film fans who see double during the next several days needn't worry. It won't be an optical delusion, (or there will really be two Carmens in our midst.

Theda Bara, the famous vampire woman of the screen, who became the most noted she-vllllan In the film world within a year, and Geraldine Farrar, for many years a grand opera star, holding her own with the Carusos and the Melbas, will appear In rival film productions of "Carmen" at the Grand and the American beginning on Thursday.

Incidentally we all ought to be thoroughly familiar with the tragic story of Carmen before these engagements are over.

The Lasky-Paramount production of "Carmen" so far has been shown at advanced prices in a few of the large cities only.

The Fox Aim production of "Carmen" will be shown to the public for the first time anywhere from the stage of the Grand Thursday.

Even in William Fox's own theater, the home producing house In New York, the Fox "Carmen" will not be seen until Sunday next.

The Lasky production was made in California at enormous expense. Bulletins. telling of the progress of the picture, were issued almost daily. The premiere in Boston was one of the big news events of the year. The Boston newspapers devoted columns of matter to describing the picture, the attitude of the audience, and so on. Miss Farrar was offered $2,000 to sing at the opening presentation of the picture in Chicago—tctiO" she spurned the offer.

The Fox production was directed by Raoul A. Walsh. Edward Velasquez, noted Spanish artist, was brought from Seville to supervise the technical and architectural details of the Spanish cities, which Mr. Fox .created at his studios.

Colonel Antonio Bravo, of the Spanish army, drilled the battalions of picturesque dragoons. The bull ring is an exact replica of the famous El Toro of Seville. The streets, houses, cathedrals, plazas and castles of the studio Seville and Cordova covered a score of acres. Five thousand persons participate in festa scene.

Richard C. Travers is the star in "The Man Trail," the six-reel Essanay photoplay to be shown at the Varieties today and Thursday. Mr. Travers plays the part of an athletic young city chap who goes to the woods of North Canada there to win a lumber sawing contest from husky lumber jacks, to subdue brawls and finally win the girl. Mr. Travers was born in northern Canada and the scenes depicted in Henry Owen's novel are familiar to him. E. H. Calvart produced the picture. In the cast with Mr. Travers are June Keith, Ernest Maupaln, John Lorenz and Thomas McLarnie.

Ivy Troutman is the star in "The House with Nobody in It," the threereel Rlalto drama at the Savoy today. One of Thursday's features will be "Con, the Car Conductor," with Riley Chamberlain, Burnett Parker and George Barr\es.

Harry Morey, Gladden James and Harry Northrup are featured in the Vitagraph drama, "To Cherish and Protect." at the Orpheum today.

War pictures showing the European rulers on the field of action will be shown at the Crescent today in conJunction with a comedy.

Dorothy Kelly In the three-reel Broadway feature, "From Out of the Big Snows," is today's film headllner at the Lyceum theatre. Thirteenth and Wabash avenue.
