Family of Nine Found With Two Mattresses on Floor for Beds. Two mattresses thrown on the floor and a rocking chair were the only furnishings found by Miss Lena Reading, secretary of the charity organization, in one of two rooms that comprised the home of a family of nine children and the parents, recently. One of the younger children was lying on one mattress. ill of chills and fever.

According to Miss Reading, the family came here recently from Missouri, driving through in a wagon, and this accounts for their lack of furniture, she said. The father has been unable to procure employment since he has been here but has been promised work at one of the factories at the first opening.

Miss Reading sent two beds for the mattresses and a number of other articles badly needed. The case was first reported to her by one of the principals of the school which the little boy who was ill had been attending.

MINUTE TALKS.

C. J. WAITS (Supt. City Schools)— The threatened epidemic of diphtheria seems to have been averted and all of our schools are opened again. About every fall along this time and again in February, we note slight outbreaks of diphtheria. They seem to come with changing seasons.

CHARLES HOUSTON (Labor Temple Fair booster)—We are anxious to have labor men come to the fair Friday night and lend their assistance for we expect a big crowd. There is plenty left for the public to see and do and we can assure the people that if they will merely lend their presence to the event we shall do the rest.

WILLIAM PENN (Vandalia"~R. R) For the sake of old Col. William Penn and Benjamin Franklin 1 am forced to lend my support to the Philadelphians in the world's series. I really don't know much about either team, but I have to remain loyal.

FRANK M. MURPHEY (LeedsMurphey Optical Institute)—We find that it is not hard to get people accustomed to attending to their needs before 6 o'clock on Saturday evening. When they know that a store will not be open after that hour they make their arrangements accordingly.
