WILEY HOUNDING INTO SHAPE FOR UNION I

South Side Eleven Expected to Be In Pink of Condition for Saturday's Contest.

By Raymond A. Wernoke. The Wiley high school football team is rounding' out in fine shape under the untiring efforts of Coach Jap Davis and should be in flrst-class condition by Saturday, when the local team will go to Linton, Ind.. for the first scheduled game for the season. The •outhsiders have some new plays up their sleeves that are expected to puzisle the downstate eleven. The coach is also expected to uncork a few more before the week is over so that his team will not lack the offensive plays to put it over on the Linton bunch.

The defense is showing wonderful strength and should be able to hold their opponents in the coming contest. With King aaid Harris at tackles, O'Connell and Self at ends, and Grafe,

HODP

and Miller filling up the guard positions, the local line should prove a stone wall to the Linton back field.

Tennis, who was forced to quit the squad a few weeks ago, has returned to the fold and will help out considerably on the wings. Isgrig, another man who has been out of the game, is expected out again next week, but lie will not be back in time to make the Linton trip. Coach Davis is working his men easy this week in order to prevent injuries to any of them. The coach wants every man to be in flrstclass condition for the setto, but he will work on their "corks' a great deal and the local gang should have plenty of pep stowed away by Saturday.

DEPATJW COACH DUTVES SQTJAD.

OUTCENCASTLB, Ind., Oct. 6.—For the first time within almost a week, Coach Young sent the DePauw regulars and reserves into a real-for-sure scrimmage workout Tuesday afternoon, lasting three hours. The big Methodist coach will work his proteges hard again today and will then call a letup until after the Franklin game Monday. It is probable that secret practice will be inaugurated again during the latter part of the week.

There is little doubt but that the stonewall line that opposed Indiana last Saturday will remain Intact for the Franklin game, unless it develops that Woodruff, who is nursing a twisted ankle, can not occupy his berth at left end. In this event, Wylte, who substituted for him at Bloomington, probably will watch that extreme. But in the back field there is not this certaintv. Iti the scrimmage Tuesday, Tence and Captain Rowan, both halfbacks. were tried out at the quarter position, and Anderson and House alternated in the vacant position.

A Bib FURBUL STUNT.

BOSTON, Mass., Oct. 6.—Charley White, of Chicago, knocked out Matty Baldwin, of Charlestown, last night in the first round of what was scheduled to be a twelve-round bout.

Matty, veteran of many a hard fought battle, fell a victim to White's sledgehammer left before the fight was three minutes old and before the throng at the Atlas A. A. had settled in its seats to enjoy what was expected to be the best battle of the season.

Baldwin, long New England's best, never had been put away before. Once a broken rib made him quit in a ring battle, but on other occasions he finished strong, win or lose. -O

In 3 877, Harry Wright piloted the Boston team to victory. He duplicated the trick in 1878. The next pennant went to Boston in 1883. when

Red Sox Have 11 Veterans for Use in World's Series

NEW YORK, Oct. 6.—Eleven of the players who helped win the world's series for the Boston Americans from the New York Giants in 1912 will be found among the eligibles on the roster of the Red Sox in the coming series with the Philadelphia Nationals for this year's world's championship. When the opposing teams are lined up the catching corps for the fioston club will be Identically the same as in 1912 and the men, Speaker, Lewis and Hooper, who will take care of the outfield, will fill the same positions that they occupied when the Red Sox were returned world's champions three years ago.

Changes, however, will be marked in the pitching staff and the infield. Wood and Collins are the only survivors of the twirlers who won the honors in that famous eight-game series, while Gardner will be the only regular left for the defense of the infield, although

In striking contrast to the veteran like line-up of the Boston players Manager Moran's aspirants for world's title and honors have been gathered together from widely separated districts during the past two years. Their great fight during the season just closing, however, has clearly demonstrated their combined strength and playing ability. Imbued with the spirit and determination that they showed throughout the season and by which they brought the National league pennant for the first time to Philadelphia, Moran's men can be depended on to hold their own against their more seasoned competitors for the world's championship.

For the purpose of comparing the playing strength of the two teams the following statistics may be helpful:

Frank Morrill managed the club. Frank Selee took charge of the Boston club in 1S97 and 1808, with Selee back in the pilot's job, the Nationals won two more pennants.

Selee made the remarkable record of winning five pennants in five years as a manager. The Boston Nationals waited long and patiently for the next pennant winner, and it was George Stallings who turned the trick in 1914.

The first American league pennant won by Boston was in 1903, with Jimmy Collins as manager. In 1904, Collins turned the trick again. After a wait of eight years, the Sox rooters were rewarded with a third pennant, presented to them by Jake Stahl and his 1912 warriors.

And now comes Bill Carrigan with another.

Lack of a punch by the Cardinals, a mlsjudgment in fielding by Jack Miller in the seventh inning, poor throwing by Frank Snyder and the breaks of the game counted in the defeat of the National leaguers. Good work on the bases by the Browns and timely and well-judged use of the stick brought Rickey's club out on top. DILLON WHALES SAVAGE.

NEW YORK, Oct. 6.—Jack Dillon, the Indianapolis middleweight, won a decisive ten-round victory over Jim Savage last night before the Broadway Snorting club. The Hoosier fighter won every round, and in the fifth and sixth sessions put his opponent to the canvas for eight and nine counts. Dillon played tor the body all through the contest, but in the fifth round he changed his tactics and sent Savage to the mat for the nine count. In the following round Dillon planted a hard right across to the jaw and Savage again went down for the eight count. Savage was unable to stop the rushes of the Indianapolis fighter at any stage of the contest and Dillon was an easy winner when the final bell rang.

GARFIELD HIGH IN FOR ALACING, STATES WEST

North End Outfit Not Showing Good In Workouts for Jasonville Encounter.

By Henry J. West.

Unless the Garfield high football warriors whip up considerable between now and Saturday, there probably will be a sad story to tell after the game with Jasonville. Despite the three weeks of consistent training and practice, the northenders are still displaying a loose and unorganized article of football. This was shown by the way thev worked against an "outlaw" team during scrimmage Tuesday, when the scrubs made gain after grain through th* regulars' line.

Several of the mainstays are suffering from sprains and bruises, which keeps them from doing their best, but the worst difficulty is with the green men on the squad. Several of the line positions look decidedly weak, due to the inexperienced material. Another fault is that the men are not fighting together, and if this defect is not remedied, it looks as if there will be a terrible slaughter at the downstate burg Saturday.

Scrimmage will be the order of practice until Friday evening, with some workouts centered around the dummy, as a little side line. Conover, Hicklin, Depugh and Gammon are all suffering from sprains and will not get into the milling before Friday, when it is hoped thev can take part in the signal drills and' then start against Jasonvi'ie.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Oct. 6.—Using what is known of the Miami formations of last season, ihe Indiana freshmen scrimmaged with two varsity squads for two hours yesterday afternoon. The practice was the longest this year. The youngsters handled the Ohio plays in good shape, but were unable to come near the varsity goal. They lost the ball many times on downs and moet of their forward pat ses were intercepted.

Ho-vever, the freshmen gave the varsity men a hard fight and are improving wonderfully. Schn&ble, Beck and Petar were in the game at all times, the latter making an end run of ao'iut twentv-flve yards.

Coach Childs intended the drill mainlv test for his men on defensive work. The varsity finally took the ball and touchdowns were made by Erehart, Mcintosh. Capt. WhLtaker, McCoy, Peckinpaugh and Matthews. The open field running and tackling of Bowser was one of the features of the work of the regulars. Hathaway also is proving to be a find, and with continued im provement will be one of the hardest men in the back field to stop. He brpke into the DePauw game near its close and soon distinguished himsely by hi* terrific line smashing. Mullet, who has participated in every branch of athletics in the university except football, is out for a tackle position and is showing up remarkably well. Several other real football players .are being uncovered from the large bunch of material on hand.

EN ROUTE WITH MCMILLAN.

Vernon McMillan, local motorcycle expert, enroute to Boston, Mass., where he will witness a world's series game or two, struck some rotten roads near Zanesville, O.. but managed to keep up the stiff clip he has set from -the very start. Mac's latest postalcard informs us as follows: "Went fine to Columbus, but the fiftv-five miles to her (Zanesville, O.) is being paved and it is the rottenest road I ever battled. Will have bum road 1 Wheeling (seventy-wo miles), but from then it ought, to be good. No trouble at all and still figure the Red Sox the winners."

DAILY 7lOO,

WEEKLY CROP REPORT.

Issued by V. S. Weather Bureau.

WASHINGTON, D. C., Oct. 6.—The late corn in most of the central and northern portions of the belt is maturing slowly on account of the cool, damp weather, and considerable damage resulted from frost at the close of the week. Muih of the late corn is being silaged. In the southern portion of the belt the crop is safe, and to the northward the early planted is' generally matured and cutting is progressing rapidly.

In portions of the spring: wheat belt considerable threshing is yet undone and work- is delayed on account of dampness.

In the winter wheat bel preparation of the soil and seeding progressed rapidly, although hindered in some portions by wet ground, especially southern Ohio, Kansas and Nebraska, In many sections fall work is less advanced than usual.

A Real Flesh Builder For Thin People

Thin men and women—that big, hearty, filling dinner you ate last night. What became of all the fat-producing, nourishment It contained? You haven't grained in weight one ounce. That food passed from your body like unburned coal through an open grate. The material was there, but your food doesn't work and stick, and the plain truth Is you hardly get enough nourishment from your meals ta pay for the cost of cooking. This is true of thin folks the world over. Tour nutritive organs, your functions of assimilation, are probably sadly out of gear and need reconstruction.

Cut out the foolish foods and funny sawdust diets. Cut out everything but the meals you are eating and eat with every one of those a single Sargoi tablet. In two weeks note the difference. Let the scales be the judge. Five to eight good solid pounds of healthy, "stay-there"/fat may be the net result. Sargoi alms to charge weak, stagnant blood with millions of fresh new red blood corpuscles—to give the blood the carrying power to deliver every ounce of fat-making material in your food to every part of your body. Sargoi, too, mixes with your food, to prepare it for the blood in an easily assimilated form. Thin people tell how they have gained all the way from 10 to 25 pounds a month while taking Sargo: and say that the new flesh stays put. Sargoi tablets are a careful combination of six of the best assimilative elements known to chemistry.
