GIRLS' PATHS BESET
Mildred Mills Recounts Some Cases Which Come to Notice in Police Court.
Yesterday afternoon a father censured a mother, holding her largely to blame for the shame which tneir youthful daughter had brought upon them. "I tried to raise the girl right. I wanted her to be good. But her mother allowed her to go places that she knew I did not approve and then when 1 came home, her mother would tell me the girl had gone elsewhere than she really was," the father said. In other words, the mother lied for her daughter the daughter grew to regard her mother in the light of a liar and when confidence of a child is so destroyed in its own parent, is it any wonder that there doesn't seem much that's real, that's worth while, that's good, to that child?
The other day a weeping mother appeaJed to our City Court matron, saying her daughter, too, had run away, she knew not where. She told of sacrifice after sacrifice she had made to make the girl happy—and therein had made her first mistake, because she had sacrificed unwisely. Unless a sacrifice is made to improve a child rather than merely to gratify its selfishness, it is a crime against the child.
When the young man, whom the mother thought was responsible for the girl's disappearance was questioned, what do you suppose he said? This is it:
His Privilege.
"Why, that mother has no kick coming. She knows I've bought that girl's clothes for the last two years. I know she is a good girl all right and sometime we expect to be married, but her mother allowed me to buy clothes for the girl without saying a word against it?"
If his story is true, see what this mother has permitted her daughter to sacrifice in obtaining a few material things! Her self-respect to say the least. We can only surmise to what it might lead.
We are hearing of little girls—I mean those still in their teens—being continually picked up by police in the parks, on the street and in questionable places—girls whose parents live right here in Terre Haute. I say, where are the parents of these children? Do you not think it is the parents who are delinquent rather than their offspring?
It. is true that our streets and parks should be safe for our children to pass through alone. But they are not they cannot be until miraculous changes are wrought in society. And until thait time, are we not, as parents—fathers as well as mothers, wholly respnsible for what happens to our young girls if we permit them to roa.m about at will?
A Recent Case.
fourteen
When the
-year-old girl, who
was taken to the Friendly Inn Monday after it was learned she had been taken to a rooming house on North Sixth street, by Henry Hurt, was questioned by her parents at the Inn, she refused to give any detailed account of where .she had been since leaving her home last Friday. She declared to her parents that she was as much to blame as Hurt, seeking, it appeared, to protect him.
Running away from home was not a new experience for the girl, however, as she had left home a month or two ago with another Terre Haute girl and was gone to Paris, 111., for several days.
The girl is said to have told other girls at the Inn that Hurt was married while to her parents she protested he was single.
REPORTS TABOR ABSENT.
Harry W. Tabor, former president of the defunct American State bank, who was to be summoned to testify in the case of the city against the directors of the bank and the sureties, in an effort to recover the $18,000 which is alleged to hsove been deposited by the city, is now in Kansas City and not under the jurisdiction of the court 1hei*e, according to Phil Long, former partner of Tabor.
SMOCK GOES FOR MAN.
Captain Jack Smock of the police department left Monday night for Jacksonville, Fla., to return Roy W. Anderson, former salesman for the B. F. Prater Flour company, who, it is alleged, disappeared from Terre Haute several months ago with several hundred dollars of the company's money. Patrol Sergeant Del Scott will serve as captain during Smock's absence. A reward has been offered for Anderson.
CUT TELEGRAPH RATES.
NEW YORK, Sept. 14.—The Postal Telegraph-Cable company has made a second reduction in the leased wire rate for the press company. It makes the night rate one-fourth of what it was sixty days ago.
City Schools to Close
When Liberty Bell Comes
Following definite word that the liberty bell will pass through Terre Haute on its return trip from the San Francisco exposition to Philadelphia, Superintendent of Schools C. J. Waits announced Tuesday that all school children will be dismissed from their classes .to go to the station and view the bell. The bell will reach Terre /Haute Nov. 21 and on the same day will visit St. Louis, Mo., East St. Louis, -Terre Haute, Brazil and Indianapolis.

By Mildred Mills.
Recently there has come to light numerous cases of young girls meeting their downfall at the hands of much older boys or men. These cases revolve themselves back to the place that I have continually held is 99 per cent responsible for the fate of girls and boys—the home. Church can do much schools can do much: other institutions perhaps can aid in the molding of character but the real foundation is builded in the home.
