NEWS OF THE STOCK JtABKET.
NEW YORK. 8ept 8.—Manipulation of war shares was the feature of today's early trading. General Motors made an Initial gain of 3 points and Crucible Steel rose 1%, with gains of a P"oint in others of that group. Tennessee Copper was the only metal issue to record a gain, advancing 2%. Railroad stocks were irregular. Rook Island was heavy, losing 1% to 18%, probably as a result of the withdrawal of an important Interest from further connec tion with the property. The local market. derived no encouragement from London, where Americans manifested further weakness.
Active selling set in before the end of the first half hour, the decline having its flrst origin in rumors of international complications. Stocks Of the caliber of Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Southern Pacific and United States Steel sold under, yesterdays lowest quotations. Before noon attempts were made to rally the market by another advance in the high-priced specialties, but the movement met with indifferent success, trading becoming apathetic. There was a marked falling off on commission business, but this was neutralized by lighter foreign offerings, although exchange on London remained heavy.
There were general recoveries in the late trading, the favorable crop report stimulating fresh buying ana short coverings. The closing was steady.

Corn rose with wheat. The market was also affected by the Iowa state reports showing eight points loss in the crop condition during August. After opening unchanged to %c off, prices aoored a moderate general advance.
The close was weak at l%c to l%c net decline. Wet weather gave firmness to oats. Trade, however, was not large.
Provisions felt the influence of unsettled quotations for hogs. The market was nervous within a narrow range.

Roy and Arthur, black face comedians, in "Fun in a Dining Car. are the headliners on the week end bin at iho Hippodrome. Fletcher. Norton and Maude Earle, who have been in musical comedy, will present a singing and dancing number, with numerous costume changes. They call their offering "A Song Sketch with Dance Trimmings." Miss Earl is a soprano and those who know something about vocal altitudlnosity say she reaches above high C. And where does she go from there? Mr. Garver doesn't say. Mr. Barhydt doesn't seem to know either. And when managers can't give you a line on their stars what's a mere cricket to do? Mr. Norton married Valeska Suratt a few years ago, but the alliance only lasted a few hours. Norton and Earl appeared together at the Varieties when that establishment was the home of vaudeville. The Camllle trio, male singers and comedians, Gilroy and Coriel in a nautical travesty entitled "Floating," and Taylor and Arnold in comedy songs and piano numbers, are others on the bill.
Toots Paka and her band of Hawaiian entertainers, and "Mary Ellen," "The Elephant with the Human Brain," are two features that will be seen at the Hippodrome next week. "Toots" and her company head the list of the flrst half of the week's show, while "Mary Ellen" is the feature of the week-end bill.
i'
Mizzi Hajos, who has been a musical comedy prima donna for several years, will make her flrst appearance in Terre Haute with "Sari" at the Grand on September 17th. #he had been booked to appear here in "The Spring Maid" and ''The Rose Maid,"- but on each occasion the altering of managerial plans prevented her from reaching Terre Haute.
