FUNERAL OF BECKER ATTENDED BY

Church Where Services are Held Pilled to Overflowing and Police Reserves are Necessary.

NEW YORK, Aug. 2.—The funeral of Charles Becker, executed in Sins Sing prison Friday for instigating the murder of Herman Rosenthal, was held today from the church of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, the Bronx. The church was filled with men and women and the overflow stood in the street outside. So great was the crowd around the church and the Becker home nearby that police reserves had to be called to handle it. Carriages to take part in the funeral procession extended several blocks from the church. One carriage was filled with floral tributes. The largest of these was a floral cross, bearing the inscription, "Sacrificed to Politics." A card conveyed the information that it had come from "a friend."

The undertaker employed by -Mrs. [Becker said the pall bearers had been selected this morning but he was under Instructions not to divulge their names.

Before the body was taken to the fchurch friends of the former police lieutenant gathered at the house to "v\3W the body. Police reserves lormecf them into a line that stretched for half a mile. Those who saw the casket noticed that it bore a new plate, reading, "Charles Becker. Died July 30, 1915." A plate removed by the police yesterday bore the allegation, that Becker was "murdered by Governor "Whitman." V? In the crowd that passed in and out of the Becker house were policemen of all ranks. With few exceptions they i«were all in civilian clothes. As the casket was being removed from the house the crowd pushed in and the police had difficulty in keeping the way clear. A wreath bore the card of Alexander S. Williams, former police inspector, who was a close friend of

rage, not in the committee on credentials, but in the committee on resolutions. The bourbon republican leadership will not only insist on a standpat candidate but will fight for an unstinted and unequivocal indorsement of the administration of "William HTaft, including the Payne-Aldrich tariff bill. "The democratic leadership likewise will point with pride to the equally lamentable Simmons-Underwood tariff bill, and against a Bryan insurrection of the first magnitude will cancel the one term presidential pledge and other Bryan propaganda and the progressives will reiterate and re-emphasize their Chicago platform of 1912. That platform remains the most nearly perfect utterance of the principles of Abraham Lincoln of modern times. "Both in its protest again the inroads of privilege fattening on an era of gross materialism, and in its practical program of concrete economic, laws and platform has become to hundreds of thousands of aggressive Americans the ark of covenant, and there is not a township anywhere without its group of gittites devoterl wholly and solely to its preservation. "The progressives" have the right plan for the tariff and other economic Issues including the trust problem. "The democrat leadership, after two and a half year's trial, has signally failed in solving the nation's economic question. Its tariff law, slammed together under the old log-rolling leadership, Is utterly unproductive of any of the results previously claimed for it. Its trust legislation flounders, its attempts of development of American going craft have fizzled.

Fight To Go On.

"That this is the Judgment of the voters is amply evidenced by the tremendous anti-democratic sentiment that has developed at the polls at virtually every election in the last two years. At many of these elections, the voter cast a republican ballot because he believed that the republican leadership had learned its lesson and would hereafter take the progressive party. "But now the voters know Tor a certainty that when the republican leadership has been restored to power, it has shown more, not less, reactionary tendencies as is notably evidenced by the actions of the legislature in New York, Ohio and Massachusetts. Hand in hand with the progressive proposition to encompass social and industrial Justice, goes the necessity of solving the great economic problems of the country, not on the basis of political advantage, of which practice both the old parties are infamously guilty, but on the basis of service to society. "Every where I found those progressives who made the fight of 1912 with that idea uppermost, eager now to continue! the fight. Whenever they have had a chance to make good they have done so. "The spectacle of republican reaction in New York and Ohio, in contrast to progressive achievements in California, under Governor Johnson, is a dramatic portrayal of the need of the new strong patriotic party of public service. Therefore the progressive will go on with its fight straight out and flatfooted."
