CHAPTER X—Continued. Now the police had gone from cellar to garret. Koupriane came from the Treba.ssof villa and joined them, Kouletabille followed him. The re-pci-ter could not stand the sight of that body, that still had a lingering warmth, of the great open eyes that seemed to stare at him, reproaching him for this violent death. He turned away in distaste, and perhaps a little in fright. Koupriane caught the movement. -Regrets?" he queried. "Yes," said Rouletabille. "A death always must be regretted. None the lees, he was a criminal. But I'm sincerely sorry he died before he had been driven to confess, even though we are sure of it."

•Being in the pay of the Nihilists, you mean? That is still your opinion?" asked Koupriane. "Yes." "You know that nothing has been found here in his rooms. The only compromising papers that have been found belong to Boris Mourazoff." "Ah!" "Why do you say that?" "Oh—nothing."

Koupriane questioned his men further. They replied categorically. No, nothing had been found that directly incriminated anybody and suddenly Rouletabille noted that the conversation of the police and their chief had grown more animated. Koupriane had b.ecome angry and was violently reproaching them. They excused themselves with vivid gesture and rapid speech.

Koupriane started away. Rouletabille followed him. What has happened?

As he came up behind Koupriane, he asked the question. In a few curt words, still hurrying on, Koupriane told the rafter he had just learned that the

The first thing any novice should have known was to keep a constant eye upon her, and now no one knew where she was. She must be searched for and found at once, for she had opened Michael's shirt, and therein probably lay the reason that no papers were found on the corpse when the police searched it. The absense of papers, of a portfolio, was not natural.

The chase commenced in the rosy dawn of the isles. Already blood-like tints were on the horizon. Some of the police cried that they had the trail. They ran under the trees, because it was almost certain she had taken the narrow path leading to the bridge that joins Krestowsky to Kameny-Ostrow. Some indications discovered by the police who swarmed to right and left of the path confirmed this hypothesis. And no carriage in sight! They all ran on, Koupriane among the first. Rouletabille kept at his heels, but he did not pass him. Suddenly there were cries and calls among the police. One pointed out something below gliding upon the sloping descent. It was little Katharina. She flew like the wind, but in a distracted course. She had reached Kameny-Ostrow on the west bank. "Oh, for a carriage, a horse!" clamored Koupriane, who had left his turn-out at Eliaguine. "The proof is there. It is the final proof of everything that is escaping usl"

hanging roof, together with the harmonizing shingles in weathered or brown stain on root, and sides, is most dignified and pleasing.

From a concrete-floored piazza 26.6x 14 feet, entrance is gained to the large living room, 13x22 feet. At the front of the living room is a deep ingle nook, with wide leather cushioned seats on three sides, the back consisting almost entirely of one great wlncow, giving directly upon the front porch, thus practically throwing the living room outdoors at will. A great fireplace, in keeping with the size of the room, and having a brown tile hearth, adds to the general effect, besides providinganother means of ventilation, which is still further secured by large windows on each side of the chimney.

An archway, flanked by leaded glass built-in bookcases, communicates directly with the dining room, 13.3x15 feet. The whole of one side of this room is of glass. It is provided with a handsome built-in china closet, plate rail, etc., and may be decorated either in harmony or in contrast to the living room, of which it Is a continuation. Dawn was enough advanced now to show the ground clearly. Katharina was easily discernible as she reached the Eliaguine bridge. There she was in Eliaguine-Ostrow. What was she doing there? Was she going to the Trebassof villa? What would she have to say to them? No, she swerved to the right. The police raced behind her. She was still far ahead, and seemed untiring. Then she disappeared among the trees, in the thicket, keeping still to the right. Koupriane gave a cry of joy. Going that way she must be taken. He gave some breathless orders for the island to be barred. She could not escape now! She could not escape! But where was she going? Koupriane knew that island better than anybody. He took a short cut to reach the other side, toward which Katharina seemed to be heading, and all at once he nearly fell over the girl, who gave a squawk of surprise and rushed away, seeming aJl arms and legs.

By Mlqne O'Brien.

One of the features of the Animated Weekly, shown today in connection with "The Diamond from the Sky" serial, is a reproduction of the running of the Latonia only a few weeks ago. This is ty all accounts one of the best pictures ever taken of a classic turt event. Though the class of horses that competed for the $15,000 event was far below the standard, there" was a splendid finish, one of the eye lash kind, between the English horse Royal and the selling plater Tetan. The picture also shows that magnificent morning glory, Emerson Cochran, the no-account skate, viewing the race from a rear position in the procession. This picture had better be good and accurate, for I saw the race.

Beginning Sunday Manager Smith orfers another Fox feature, "Should a Mother Tell," with Betty Nansen, Stewart Holmes, Claire Whitney, Arthur Hoops and Jean Sothern in the cast. J, Gordon Edwards, who directed all of the Betty Nansen pictures, regards this one as his most artistic production.

For screem purposes Richard Harding Davis, fantastic comedy, "The Dictator," has been made even more farcloal than the sprightly play from whicn it was derived. The action starts with a rough and tumble fight between Brooke Travers, the wealthy young New Yorker, and his taxicab chauffeur, over the fare to the spot where his yaoht lays waiting for him. The two go overboard and Travers thinks he haa killed the driver. He then deoldes to sail for Port Banos. On board he changes places with an American consul. Complications of a farcical nature then ensue, action is swift and John Barrymore and Ivan Simpson, as the
