DEEP AUTO MYSTERY SOLVED BY THE POLICE

Doctor McCall Reports Everything Cleared Up But Bill for New Batteries.

This Is a story about a lost automobile or rather two lost automobiles. It happened right in Terre Haute. The storm is blamed for the story.

While Dr. and Mrs. R. F. Wilcox were in the Grand opera house during the storm, their Studebaker roadster stood outside in all the downpour. After the show the doctor found that the car wouldn't start so he went home and telephoned to Garrigus' garage to get the car on Cherry street.

About the same time the Wilcox car refused to start, Dr. James McCall was entertaining a friend from Illinois at dinner at Hotel Demlng. which also is on Cherry street. The friend's Studebaker also got wet and it also wouldn't run. Dr. McCall called Richey's garage and told them to haul the machine in. "And," said Dr. McCall, "you can just over haul it and put in new batteries."

Richey's alert men hurried to Cherry street. Near the Grand they found a Studebaker roadster and hauled it away to the garage. It didn't look like it needed over hauling and new batteries, but they did it any way.

An hour later detectives were on the trail trying to locate the man who stole Wilcox's car. In the police barn there was an unclaimed Studebaker roadster with an Illinois license. The trail was hot and the detectives were sure the culprit would be brought to the bar of Justice 'ere night.

Then the garage men got together. The cars were identified, returned to their owners, and Dr. McCall is awaiting for the first of the month to bring around a bill for overhauling someone •tee's car.

At The Movies

By IMlqur O'Brien.

On a tropical island in the south Pacific, with such sartorial equipment as climate and the exigencies of the occasion permitted a high-spirited, citybred girl, an idealist, and a young man. who has only naiure and himself to commune with for a period of twenty years—here is the big situation which develops eany In the action of that remarkable Him, "The Island of Regeneration," now on view at the Varieties. A rather delicate situation, yes! but superbly handled. The younpr people fall in love. They are discovered by the owner of the yacht from which the young woman had flown to escape xinwelcome attention. Then some fast moving incidents of an intenselv dramatic nature, followed by the apparent suicide of the girl, who had noted the effect the taunts of the vacht owner, upon her unsophisticated island lover. The young man, properly barberod, gees liock to claim an estate. The anht owner goes back, too, with a secret that worries him jrieatlv. He knows the girl lives. There is splendid acting, remarkable photography, and, better than all, a wonderfully appealing story to juggle with in thin Aim. It is the best feature Vltagruph has turned out in a long, long "time. Edith Storey, Antonio Moreno and young Rankin Drew are the three players who contribute so much toward making 'The Inland of Regeneration" a picture of quite unusual worth. Here

is picture of absolutely universal appeal. And it tells Us own story, too. Captions are quite unnecessary. "The Island of Regeneration" closes its all too orief engagement tonight.

The experiment of reviving half a dozen of the Fox film features at the Grand has been successfully tried our. Every one of the pictures has drawn paying houses. Kven on Wednesday, when the terrific storm cut clown th. afternoon attendance to those whe had gathered before the downpour, the night crowds made "Kreutzer Sonata" cne of the money makers of the engagement. "The Nigger" again repealed with jrroflt to all concerned yesterday. This was the third engagement of this film within a very short time. Today "The Thief," with Dorothy Donnelly, will wind up the Fox series of revivals. Miss Donnelly was the original Madame in America, thougn Madame Bernhardt created the role in France and also played it in this country. Madame Simone and Margaret TUington appeared in the big city production of "The Thief," but the play ha been done by nearly every repertoire and stock company in the country It has also been done on the pitcher and bowl circuit with four peoplo and trunk full

"For King and Country," a six-reel romanco of Servia, with royal personages mixed in intrigue and warfare, is being shown at the Savoy. Princess Ruspoli, who conies by her title honestly, so to say, Impersonates a princess, and A. A. Capozzi, thp Carlylo Blackwell of Italy is the Prince Sergius. Saturday's double Dill includes "The Lute of the Yukon," a three-reel thriller, and a Charley Chaplin comedy. "The Juggernaut" conies buck to the Varieties Saturday.

Mary Kuller will be the star In "The Little White Violet." at the Princess Sunday.

One reel of athletic action will be shown on every program at the Savoy nf.\t week. These pictures will show champions in all classes making records at Broad Ripple, Ind.

Ford Sterling is the comedy star a.t tho Oi-pheum today. He is shown in "Court Horse Crooks." a two-reel Keystone, its first run here. Sundav's fp?tture is "The Fakir," a two-part Domino, with Walter Edwards and Rhec Mitchell.

"Whom the Gods Would Destroy," a three-reel feature, with Joseph

"The Dictator," the Richard Hardixig Davis romance, which was successful as a comedy, is now a film and comc« to the American today for a two days' stay. The picture was made in Cuba. It was one of the reason's. successes at the Strand, In New York.

film form Mr. Davis' story is light]} treated. It is a fast moving screen farce, by all accounts. In the catit are: John Barrymore Charlotte Ives, Ruby Hoffman. Ivan Simpson, Waiter Craven, Robert Broderick, Esther Lycn, Harry West, Mario Majerlno and Thomas AleGrain.

King Baggot is still the one best bet of tho Imp studios, when it cornea to filming a romantic drama. "The Marble Heart." which was shown at the Princess Thursday, was Lhelved by evc?i the old-time "legit" stars about the time "The Lady of Lyons" passed into the discard. As a film proposition, how, ever, "The Marble Heart"' is still serviceable. for the Imp people have made a very attractive photo-play out of It. The earlier rcenes showing the sculptor's studio scenes with real works of art on display, are especially well put on. When the sculptor permits himself to be trifled with bv the mercenary marble-hearted Marco, the drama becomes a bit mushy. Mr. Bagpot, both as the ancient and the modern sculptor, is at all times the dominating figure. Jane Fearnley do»s some excellent work as Marco, the lady with the rrarble heart.

Smiley,

Lilie Leslie, Rosetta Brice and Georrre Spencer, is the film headliner at the Crescent today.

The Crescent program for next week includes soir.o re-l?pues of Biograph succesres diicctod by D. W. Grifilth.
