NEWS OF THE STOCK MARKET.
NEW YORK. June 2.—Greater firmness and breadth marked today's earlydealings on the stock exchange, out war shares were again the oorninnnt features. Advances of 1 to 4 ooints were recorded by General Electric, Bethlehem Steel, W c-stinghouse and Crucible Steel, while allied issues rose a point or two, and Federal Mining preferred iVfc.
United States Steel was the only speculative leader to sain as much as a point, ethers in that group rising only fractions. Among the few declines of the first half hour were New Haven and New York Air Brake, which fell 1 and 2 points, respectively.
For some undefined reason, Wail street Ttas disposed to place a favorable interpretation on the conference to be held later in th« day between tho president and ihe German ambassador. This was reflected, in the widening- of areas of gains. Railway issues registered advances of 1 tc 2 points, and some of the special industrials increased their early advantage. Bonds were firm.
Trading became more perfunctory in the later session, prices showing fractional recessions, from their best. The closing was strong.

HEARD ABOUT TOWN.
One of the stories which sifted from the big motor speedway at Indianapolis was told on Wabash avenue. It is said a rer-ident of one of the renowned rural districts in the southern part of the state brought his family in their Ford to the races. He parked the car and rot having an advantageous position left the. car and moved to the grandstand.
O11
returning for the car
it was gone. He complained to the cfTicials and one of them with a streak of humor pointed to the large "Look Out For Pickpockets" and suggested that cne of the followers of that vocation had made away with the machine.
In order that he will be able to not only open court but also "keep order," the new baliff of the City Court, Mat liorley. Tuesday afternoon received t\\ gavels from Bert Hebb, a second hand dealer, who: place of business is on Dorley's beat. The first gavel was of the ordinary size f:s is usually used by n. court haiiff. This it was explained -was for the purpose of convening cnurt. The other was fashioned after the type used in constructor work, with iron lands twisted around the head. This latter is to be used in case of a disturbance ir. the court, according to the note which went with the twe presenis.

WASHINGTON. D. C., June 2.—The weather during the last week in the winter wheat belt continued favorable for plant development. The Hessian fly and other insects were somewhat less active throughout the belt.
