OfiDER PERMITS USE OF BENZOATE SODA

Ruling of Pure Food Inspector Allows Preservative When Label Is Marked.

The ruling of the state food and drug commissioner, H. E. Barnard, regarding the use of benzoate of soda and other preservatives, not injurious to the health, to the effect that they are forbidden throughout the state was repealed by an order issued on Thursday morning. Previously in the state of Indiana all manufacturers were forbidden to use any thing of a like nature for the purpose of preserving food stuffs, but under the new order they will be allowed a discriminate use of such materials, providing that mention is made of the presence of the preservative on thfe outer label of each package. Following out this order all Bales must be made in the original unbroken package of all foods that are preserved by the uae of benzoate of »oda or sulphur dioxide. preservative to lees than seven-tenth* of one percent Ir. O. C. Newgeot, the local pore food Inspector, says that the new ruling will not effect his work materially aa most of the Investigation will devolve upon the shoulders of the government agents who are watching the interstate commerce shipments.

The new ruling is the result of food inspection decision number 104, which sets out that benzoate of soda, when mixed with food in small quantities, is not poisonous nor injurious to the Ipalth. But It further states that it is the people's right to know what they are getting in the way of a preservative.

War Against Filth.

War has been declared on the restaurants and grocery stores in the city and vicinity who indiscriminately display their waxes in such a manner to make them accessible to flies, dust and dirt, Ir. Newgent said. Many lunch rooms, restaurants and grocery stores in the city and adjoining territory have in the past been displaying their wares for public inspection in the windows and on counters without protection of fly screens or other means of keeping infection away, he said. Meat, especially, will be under inspection now

that the warmer months are approaching. Already steps have been taken for the reduction of such practices and Dr. Newgent promises that if there 1b no betterment in the conditions in the near future prosecution will follow.

Former Centenary Pastor Takes Up Work In New York. Terre Hauteans will be Interested in the following relative to Rev. Worth M, Tippy, former pastor of the Centenary M. E. church here ana who has Just been called from CHev^eland to a New York church. The Evening Post calls him an efficiency expert and in an extended article quotes him as saying: "Everything in New York is on a gigantic scale, and one does not see how the churches can measure up to the work which is required of them, unless they, too, work in a large way. The principles of business organiza_ tion, which have so enormously increased the magnitude and power of modern industry, when applied to churches, produce corresponding results."

BAPTISTS IN CONVENTION. JjOB AINKMLEB, Cal., May JO.—Reports of various committees were expected to occnpy the attention of delegates of the Northern Bapatst convention at today's sessions. The report of the committee on efficiency wfts to be read and discussed when the convention met. June 1 was set aside as Baptist day at the Panama-Pacific exposition.
