SAYS PRISON IS 11
Mrs. Donn M. Roberts Returns From Leavenworth Favorably Impressed With Institution.
Mrs. Donn M. Roberts, who for the past few weeks has been visiting friends in Kansas City and running down to Leavenworth every day to Bee her husband and the "other Terre Haute boys," returned to this city late Wednesday, much impressed with Leavenworth. She says it is a place no one would object to if it were not for the fact that the inmates cannot leave the place. "Leavenworth is Just like the girls' boarding school that I "went to when I was a girl," said Mrs. Roberts Friday afternoon. "Indeed I don't think the discipline is as strict in some re specta as the school. I found all the boy® apparently enjoying life. They seemed happy and now that they are used to the place they are very cheerful. I think that without exception Leavenworth is one of the best places of its kind in the United States. It is far better than the average military post. "All the boys are getting fat. I positively tfelieve the place agrees with them. George Sovern and Talbott play in the band and look very nice in their white uniforms. "I was visiting Mr. Roberts' brother-in-law in Kansas City and I went out to Leavenworth every day. It is hardly any further than it is to Faris from Terre Haute. I am afraid I overstayed my welcome, I was there so much of the time. My husband is looking' especially well. I feel better about it now that I have seen the place.
Quarters Comfortable.
"All the Terre Haute boys are together or rather they are divided into two parties, one on each side of the corridor. They call the place where they sleep the cell room but they are are really not cells at all but just a regular bed room, very light and airy. The beds are also comfortable. I know because I went and tried them, "Louis Nimley is hauling bricks and he does not like his work a bit. He says it is too hard but Donn saw him wheeling them across the yard and says that he only took nine at a time ao he guessed that he wasn't working too hard. Eoc-Chief of Police Holler is custodian of the cell room."
Mrs. Roberts said the lawyers are stm working hard to secure Roberts' reloase on bond. She Is still hopeful.
TELLS BUSINESS MEN THEY DON'T GIVE TIME TO CHRIST
Rev. Lyon Announces That Series of Meetings Will Be Held At Root Tea Room.
"The Lost Christ" was the subject of the noon luncheon talk given Friday by the Rev. Milford H. Lyon at the last of the series of noon luncheons. Dr. Lyon announced that beginning next Tuesday meetings will be held each evening at the Root store tea room for a luncheon. The meetings will be held from 6:15 o'clock until 7:15 o'clock when the men will march to the tabernacle to attend the services. "The trouble with the most of you business men is that you haven't time for Jesus Christ," said Dr. Lyon. "You are crowding Jesus out of your lives. Why, some husbands aren't even acquainted with their wives they're so busy. The cause of all the sorrow and trouble in Terre Haute is the fact that the men have forgotten Christ in their greed for political and business prestige."
At 1 o'clock the business women and girls held a meeting in Valentine's hall on Wabash avenue. Shop meetings were held at the Vandalia road house, the Southeastern and Big Four railroad shops at the noon hour.

The board of park commissioners as re-organized met with City Engineer Frank Kattmann, who also is superintendent of parks, in his1 office Thursday afternoon, and named Julius Lwderer president, and Homer Williams secretary. The other member is John H. Beggs. "I feel that-the city has three, honorable men on the board of park commissioners who will look after the city's parks as they would their own business," said Mayor Gossom. "Each man on the board has promised me that he would do his duty on the beard and act as faithfully as he would in attending his personal affairs."

Seniors' Last Frolic Held At Forest Park—Big Eats Total Loss.
Rose polytechnlo seniors got back to their "kid" days yesterday afternoon at the annual picnic at Forest park. The entire day was spent in celebrating, the class going1 out to the park on the 7:55 train.
The first event of the day was a "double-scrub" baseball game which later was turned into a regular one by choosing sides, the civil and mechanical engineers taking on the electrical and chemical. A good workout was given those who intend composing the team to be stacked against the faculty and it seems that there will be no lack of pitchers. Among those who aspired to that position yesterday were, Sandford, Brauns, Sheldon, Drake, Dunn and Stevens. All of these took their hand at it and the game was finally won by the mechcivil section, 17 to 7.
After the game big eats were on the program and no one was absent at that roll call. Everything that was ever eaten at picnics was there, for

a while. The afternoon was spent in swimming and motorboarding. For the dance, as none of the opposite sex were to be had, the roll was called by numbers and the odd numbered were declared "women." The party broke up after cleaning out the remaining eats about six o'clock.
This marks the «nd of the seniors' class affairs as in a little more than a month they will be graduated.

CITY SCHOOL TEACHERS
Beplies to Utterances Made At the Tabernacle Belative to Schools and the Bible.

Rabbi Jacob Kaplan Frilay issu*. a statement which he said was in defense of Terre Haute schools and Terre Haute teachers, and in reply to Evangelist Lyon, who has criticised school teachers who do not accept the bible. In hi£, statement Rabbi Kaplan says: "The constitutional rights of American citizens will be destroyed Just as soon as religion is introduced into the public schools. 'This evangelist who has come to the city to intrude on the workings of our public institutions,-steps over the bounds of reason when he makes statements such as he did the other night in reference to the public schools. His statement as I remember it was, 'There is no teacher in the»l _____ country that is fit to teach the young
people who does not embrace Jesus Christ.' Just as soon as religion such as that is introduced into the public schools, one of the greatest institutions of democracy in the country, we will have a state of affairs such as ex

isted between the Catholics and the protestants the Jewish people and the Christians the Romans and the Christians, a persecution of religious principles that has been in progress since the beginning' of the world and that is only now under the civilization of modern time sinking to insignificance. "The public school has always been democratic, since the beginning of such institutions in this country. Children go to school to learn to improve the mind. Do they go to adopt the religious principles of another? I speak not only for my own people but for 60 per cent of the citizens of the country who are not christians as this man defines a christian. Why do the people allow a man to come' to them and force opinions that are in direct conflict with the rights that the founders of this country established in the past? When we came to this country we came the most of us to escape this same religious persecution that this evangelist advances and advocates. "If no other pastor in the city is patriotic enough to grasp the significance of the theory that he advances them I will make my protest in the name of American citizens, against the furtherance of such principles."
