programs Are Announced for Day in Sunday Schools—Lyon to Hold Observance Later.

Mother's day will be observed at the Services of many of the churches in Terre Haute Sunday. Special programs have been arranged in some of the Sunday schools while the pastors of other churches are to make special mention of the day in others.

At the Centenary Methodist church cantata written by Mrs. Carrie B. jiams, called the "Harbor of Home," |ll be presented by about 50 children. .ss Ester Neukom has charge of the ntata. Vocal and musical numbers 11 be given by Mrs. C. A. ISckert, jllie Hay ton, Juanita Andricks, ssrling Pittman and Mary Frances jrnell. The program will be given the morning. Mothers of the pupils of the First athodist church Sunday school have -en invited to attend the services on jnday morning. Carnations will be iven the mothers. An original poem written by Ruth Agnes Aberling will read by Miss Margaret Ehrmann. Robert Weston, tenor will sing a solo, he Sunday school will open at 9:15 'clock.

Rod for the Bull Moose.

The other day I met Lafollette on the steps of the senate office building. The reactionaries have been killing him off regularly now for three years. It was the first time I had seen him for several weeks. He seemed just as heavy as ever, his face ruddy, his eye sparkled, his voice retained its old time melody and strength, and as he ascended the steps he walked' with the virility and spring of a college youth. It was quite evident to me that if the reactionaries had counted on tne elimination of the Little Giant they had reckoned without their host. One thing is certain: Bob Lafollette and his little crowd of progressives will have a place in the next republican national convention and they will have their program and their ultimatum. A few soft-hearted bull moosers who left the republicans because they had fallen down on a nomination may return to the fold and sit in the convention prepared to sneeze when Penrose takes snuff—but not Lafollette. There will be an open fight. The platform will be either much like the bull moose platform or like the republican platform of 1912. Of course it will be like the latter. And upon that platform with some reactionary as a candidate they propose to invite the bull moose back. Rather hopeless?

An illustration close to home of what the "reorganized republican parly" means: Chairman Hays of Indiana has made pathetic efforts to have it appear that there has been a house cleaning In the organization of the G. O. P., and that progressives may now return with self-respect. Let us see: Before the campaign of 1912 there were two wings of the republican party, the stand pat and the progressive. and the Grant club of Pittsburgh last week came out flat-footed and with a groat clamor in favor of the nomination of Boies Penrose for president. The speeches made on that occasion In favor of his candidacy have made interesting reading In Washington Much stress was laid upon the fact that he, better than any other, embodies that spirit of cordid materialism, of plutocracy, for which the old reactionary wing of the republican party stands. The very features of his career and character which have made him obnoxious to men of the forward looking type and lmpeled Roosevelt to read his title-clear to mansions in the skies are the very features that were held out at this banquet as making him the logical and natural candidate of the party. There was admittedly much loglo In this contention. The republican party, now in control of the old republican machinery, Is brutally, frankly, and uncompromisingly reactionary, and the logical candidate must be some one of the type of Penrose, Root, Fairbanks or Gallinger. In view of this condition men of the progressive stripe, who remained within the republican party under protest in 1912 and had hoped to rescue the party from the clutches of the mercenaries, have already given up hope. Senator Borah has taken to the tall timber.

To make this hopeless situation all the blacker, Boss Biarnes of New York, with all the Bourbonlsh blindness of his type and kind, has thrown monkey wrench Into the harmony planB of the hyprocrites wlio hoped to deceive the progressives Into the belief that there had been a house cleaning at the old republican homestead. The trial at Syracuse has sent the cold shivers down the spinal columns of the conspirators. Barnes lias been honest in his political tactics. He has no apology to make. He sees no reason to surrender to Roosevelt now that the republicans have whipped the progressives and have sent forth the impudent announcement that the bull moosers may return if properly prepared with sack cloth and ashes. He sees no reason to delay the little game of skinning the corpse until after the next election. He feels, as Penrose and Root and Fairbanks feel, that the republicans are now strong enough to go it alone. And so he comes o.ut with his battle axe and makes straight for the Rough Rider of Oyster Bay. And the result has been disheartening. Indeed the failure of Whitman, and the Barnes-Roosovelt trial have combined to make almost certain the triumph of Wilson in New York. The little plan to fool the progressives has fallen down. And in the back ground to make the failure certain looms the little giant from Wisconsin—Bob Lafollette.

able to almost hold the balance even. Now it is proposed to wholly eliminate Beveridge or take him back as a private In the ranks. It Is made quite clear that unless he retires to the garret next the roof he Is not desired in the old homestead. On the other hand Jim Watson is a more potential factor in the republican politics of the state than he has ever been before. The understanding in the capital is that he is in reality the leader. He was selected by the republican organization to "reply to Woodrow Wilson" after the Indianapolis speech of the president—selected, of course, because of the feeling that he, better than any one else, could voice real sentiments of the party. He has been sent out over the state on speech making tours for the party. After the masterful and unanswerable speech of Redfield at Indianapolis it was announced at first that Jim Watson would reply, and it is whispered about that a shift was only made in the plans when it occurred to some of the organization men that the mask needed readjustment. However that may be, that is Hays' reorganized and purged party to which he invites the progressive to return amounts to:

Before the party was purged of evil Influences 'Beveridge was the most potential factor in it—the most powerful single leader, and Jim Watson was discredited and out.

Now under Hays' purged arrangement Beveridge is out and, Jim Watson aided by Jim Goodrich' and C. W. Fairbanks is the high cock of the walk.

Thus there are reforms and reforms. Reason for the Gloom. When all this is taken into consideration it is easy to understand the gloom that has again fallen upon the republican reactionaries and the confident attitude of the administration forces. There is not a democratic leader in touch with conditions all over the country who is not positive of victory in 1916. The renomination of Wilson without opposition is aforegone conclusion, and the character of the platform will be as progressive as the policy of the administration has been. The only fly in the ointment at all is the difficulty of getting the facts before the people. This is due to the fact, known now to every school boy, that the special interests own and control practically every paper in every city of any size in the country, and dominate some of the leading news gathering agencies that serve the smaller papers. No one can observe events In Washington two months without realizing this to be the situation.

Returning to the purged party proposition: it will be interesting to the progressives to know that the reactionaries are gleefully looking forward to a reunion when congress again meeta in December. Joe Cannon will be there with Longworth and McKlnley and all the rest. It Is significant of the position in the party of Cannon to know that the large, elegant minority room in the capital which is almost as fine as the room of the speaker is being renovated and touched up with loving care and that this room is to be turned over next winter—to Mann the alleged leader? Ah, no. To Cannon the real leader! There, in state, he will again hold court, again crack the whip, again dictate republican programs and policies, and there no doubt he will meet and greet our friend the republican state chairman In Indiana when he calls to discuss the "purged party."
