SAX FRANCISCO, April 16—A xprig of shamrock, a bit faded and crumpled as the result of its long journey from Kerry, was the means of uniting Mrs. Margaret Murphy and her husband John in Superior Judge Flood's court, after they had decided to part forever.
Margaret claimed John was cruel, and would sooner go to soccer games than eat her Sunday dinners. She left him and filed a divorce complaint. The day after she quit her home a tetter came from her mother in Kerry. John took it to her when he was summoned to court. She would not receive it from his hands, and he had to give it to her attorney, Joseph Taaffe, who passed it over to her.
Mrs. Murphy opened it and out fell the sprig of shamrock. The letter expressed the hopq that she was getting along well with her husband, and was full of well wishes for them both.
Margaret picked up the bit of verdure and looked at John. He had been watching her intently. Hesitating & moment, she tore the sprig in two, and, going over to her husband, placed half of it in his hat. ''Looks good," remarked Taaffe to the bailiff and clerk, the ortly other occupants of the courtroom. "Let's beat it." They did.
A moment later out came John with Margaret on his arm. "I understand the judge won't te down today," he remarked to Taaffe. "Well, we don't need him, anyway."
OLD ENGLISH HERMIT BLAMED IT 0N BOOKS
Charles A. Ward at Eighty-Seven Was Compiling a Cookbook When Death Overtook Him.
LONDON, April 16.—"Books have "beefi my ruin," was one of the best things said by the late Charles Augustus Ward, who in his latter days was a curious old hermit of Walthamstow, In Essex. His passion for books had led him to dispose of the prosperous •wine business at Mayfair he inherited from his father. One of his hobbies was cook books, and at eighty-seven he was compiling one for his own use from ancient sources when death overtook him. He had just inherited a small fortune from his sister. His collection of 3,000 volumes has gone to the London library. He was often eeen around London in a Holland smock, or a blue frock coat with brass buttons, and a Panama hat, with yellow ribbon.
A hermit with snow white hair of patriarchal length and beard streaming to his ankles had been routed by the sanitary corps out of his den at Fulwell, where he had lived almost without stepping outdoors since he was forty-flve, at which period of life an actress jilted him. Food, drink and tobacco were taken to his garden wall at dusk every day by a messenger boy.
