BALL WRECKS OLD HOUSE NEAR RIOT IS THE RESULT
Six Persons in Rickety Structure Get Out, But Old Dog Is Killed.
LOS ANGELES, Cal., April 13.—Three boys were playing ball in the rear of an old Spr.nish dwelling house at 458 Commercial street. One husky youth hit the ball and the ball hit the house and the house collapsed. In the old structure were six persons and a dog. The doe died.
As the time-rotted timbers fell in a mushroom-like heap over the heads of the inhabitants, they crumbled tip and broke and for this reason no one was seriously injured, but all were badly frightened.
It it had not been for the dog, which was too old and weak to get down the rickety stairs, there would have been no need for the turmoil that resulted. Little Romando Reys, four years old, went back into the building to get the dog. As he was ascending the stairs the supports gave way and the boy crashed to the floor.
This gave rise to great excitement, which caused the sending in of a fire alarm and a riot call to central police station. Some one else called for the receiving hospital ambulance and still another for an ambulance from the California ambulance, all of which duly arrived with great clamor. By this time thousands of people were there.
The police, who were the last to arrive, thought that an I. W. W. riot had broken loose and wi'th drawn revolvers charged through the now immense crowd. After several minutes they managed to get to the collapsed dwelling and instead of the riot found Romando Reyes sitting in the middle of the ruins with the dead dog in his arms.
PAWNBROKERS' HARVEST.
The opinion among New York pawnbrokers is that the two weeks preceding Christmas and New Year's were the most profitable for them during the entire year. It has been estimated by conservative authorities that more than $1,000,000 was lent out during the week preceding Christmas.
It is estimated that fully $3,000,000 is outstanding in loans by the 300 pawnbrokers who do business in New York City. It was said that one Bowery pawn shpp had more than $1,000,000 in loans* outstanding.
Business in general has been much better with pawn shop men this year than it was last year at this time. This is accounted or by the act that the number of unemployed is much larger than last winter. As a consequence loans have depreciated. A pledge will not bring as large a loan this year as last year.
One of the leading pawn brokers, v. ho lives in F^ifth avenue, and conducts a string of pawn shops in Greater fNew York estimated that fully 50 per vent of the loans made during the last two weeks would be repaid within 30 days.
Some queer loans are made by pawn brokers around New' Year's. One business man used to pawn the greater part of his household furniture every year another his wife's jewelry. As much as $50,000 is loaned by the better class pawn brokers to individual persons.
