WARSAW HAPPY EVEN IF WAR RACES NEAR
Crash of Battle In Distant Causes Litle Stir—Air Raids Are Common.
WARSAW, April 9.—The city of Warsaw, which is nearer to the actual fighting zone than any other city of its size in Europe, and which has lived for months under the continued menace of German occupation, wears the astonishing aspect of a disinterested observer, for whom the fortunes of war have 'but a casual interest. This is the capital of the country whose sons, almost equally divided, are fighting half

on the Russian and half on the AustroGerman side. Warsaw is within thirty miles of that fierce, persistent, and apparently untiring German offensive, against which a large part of the entire Russian arm has been massed, and is subject to all the ills which follow in the wake of battle, such as dearth of provisions and fuel, congestion and disease. Over a, hundred thousand refugees, who have thrown themselves upon the mercy of the various committees of Polish relief in Warsaw, have brought into the city five known cases of cholera. The cases have been promptly isolated, and all Who have been subjected to the contagion have been deported into the country.
One then is entitled to a feeling of amazement at the undimished spirits and the apparently normal life which exist in this city, which, one reasons, ought to be trembling on the verge of catastrophe. The streets are gay with laughter and song, the cafes are filled until late at night, and the opera and ballet are playing to full houses. It is curious, indeed, to see these audiences giving way to the imaginary troubles of the actors on the stage, while rcsul trouble awaits them beyond the door of the theater. On the former German advance upon Warsaw, which approached within seven miles of the city, one theater continued its performance without interruption, while the booming of the enemy's guns could be distinctly heard over the voices of the actors.
Club life goes on as usual. An American correspondent was in the rooms of one of the best-known Warsaw clubs on the occasion of a recent aeroplano raid. Four men were playing auction bridge. Two bombs dropped, one within 200 yards of the club. Two of the men strolled carelessly to the window and watched the two German Taubes volplane recklessly from an altitude of about 6,000 feet to a distance of approximately 2,000, drop a bomb apiece

and circle upward and westward, with two Russian aeroplanes In clos3 pursuit. Russian shrapnel was directed at the two German aeroplanes from a battery on the outskirts of the city, but the speed of the aeroplanes was so great that the gray bursts of smoke fell harmlessly in the rear. The other two men in the bridge game were more interested in their hands.
These aeroplane raids have indeed become such commonplace occurrences that instead of hurrying indoors, as the residents of the city used to do when the appearance of the German Taubes was an alarming novelty, the streets are now crowded with mildly interested spectators, who, if they have no other business on hand, make it a point to be on the streets on clear afternoons at
2
o'clock, at which time
the German aeroplanes appear, weather permitting, with unerring regularity. "Before we have tea," says a timid looking Polish woman, "let's plan to go out and see the aeroplane raid." one might almost think that it was a sporting event of the season, which it had become fashionable to attend.
Meanwhile the wounded are brought back from the trenches, and a continuous line of soldiers, infantry, mounted infantry, cavalry, and long provision trains file through the city to take their place in the firing line. But the endless activity, the countless episode?, any one of which would in ordinary times provoke anxiety and alarm, seem only to act as a stimulant upon the over-wrought nerves of this remarkable capital. One soon learns that the nervous laughter which one hears everywhere in Warsaw is not far from a sob and the apparent unconcern only the pitiful bravery of a nation that has learned not to cry when it is hurt.

Dr. McClintic, of Peru, Shakes Hand of Nicholas—Ruler Thanks Americans.
PERU, Ind., April 9.—Ir. Brown McClintic, son of W. B. McClintic, of Peru, who is in the Red Cross service at Kiev, Russia, in a letter home says that he recently met and shook hands with Czar Nicholas of Russia. Dr. McClintic says: "The czar was in Kiev on February 9, and all the Americans were taken to tho depot at 5:30 p. m. We were in full uniform, of course, and had a special room, the first one from the door. At 8 p. m. tho czar drove up in a big blue automobile, with a couple of officers. His approach was heralded merely by the cheering of the crowd. He jumped out and sprang up the steps and entered our room. We physicians were all at salute. He returned the salute, and the chief of the Red Cross in Kiev introduced us as the Americans. He started down the line. "Suddenly it dawned on him that we men, in Russian uniforms, were Americans. He stuck out his hand and shook hands with each of us, and in perfect English said: 'Oh, I thought you were Russians.' He smiled as he said it, and seemed to enjoy his own mistake. He thanked us for the good care we were 'taking of his soldiers," and apologized for keeping us waiting. As he went down the line shaking hands with the nurses, he talked ajid said various things I did not catch. "Nicholas 11 was dressed as a sim

ple colonel of Russian Infantry. He wore no decorations, which was quite a contrast to the assemblage present, excluding ourselves, on whose breasts blazed diamond stars, metal crosses and ribbons of all the colors of the rainbow. "The czar will take no higher rank than colonel because he held that grade when his father died, and now there is no one higher than himself to confer a higher commission on him. He is too modest to confer it on himself, say the Russians, and they say it with pride. "Personally, Nicholas looks like his pictures, but is taller than I nad oeen led to believe. He has handsome eyes, deep blue, and a good smile. I liked him as a man—felt that if he had been born in a different position, he would be a good fellow to have as a friend. He was very tired, having had a hard day inspecting things. He looks like a busy man, and shows the care and worry caused by this war. He bears no resemblance to the cafe lounging nobility, but looks like an active man of affairs—but shows polish and breeding and military bearing in every line."
