VISITED BY BURGLARS

Thieves Work During Vice President's Absence Not Known Whether Valuable Were Taken.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 7.—The home here of Thomas R. Marshall, vice president of the United, States, has been entered by burglars, it became known today. Vice President and Mrs. Marshall are visiting relatives of Mrs. Marshall in Scottsdale, Arizona, where they went after Mr. Marshall had represented President Wilson at the dedication of the Panama Pacific exposition at San Francisco.

It had not been learned today if anything of value had been taken and no reply had been received to messages sent the vice president. The robbery was discovered by Mr. Marshali'd neighbors, who found a window had been broken. Partly burned matches were scattered all over the house but seemingly no effort had been made to open the drawers or closets.

There was no silverware or jewelry in the house when the robbery was investigated but the neighbors presumed that such articles had been removed before the Marshalls departed early in March on their western trip.

NEWSPAPER WASTE FOR CHINA.

There has been developed in Hong Kong a somewhat interesting if not highly important trade in printed but unused newspapers from Europe and the United States. Shipments have been increasing from the United States of late- and considerable, quantities have been imported from Great Britain and. before the war. from Germany. T^ate shipments have been landed in Hong Kong at a. price of about J4 local currency per picul of 133,333 pounds—at present exchange about 1.3 cents gold per pound. Consul General George E. Anderson, Hong Kong, writes that the paper is used for various purposes. There is some fair demand for it for wra.pping purposes, but the greater portion at present is re-shipped from Hong Kong to points in Shantung province, China (of which Tsingtau and Chefoo are the chief ports and Tsinanfu in the interior metropolis). It Is used in Shantung province for the manufacture of a special variety of thin wrapping paper used by the manufacturers of pongee silk for the inner wrappings of rolls oC._this silk. This is a special trade and as a rule shipments of the paper to be accepted should reach HongiKong not later than Chinese New Tear so that it. can be sent into the northern province at the opening of navigation in the spring. Some failamount of the paper from a.hroad is used in the manufacture of the cheap thin white news print paper used by the Chinese newspapers in Hong Kong, Canton and various nearby ('hinese cities. The demand for the stock for all purposes here is increasing, but the material must come at a very low price.
