•everything. I gathered the clothes in the basket and laundry bag. I thought you'd be back in time to get the other things." "Why, my laundress comes Thursday. I do not want you to do such work," said Nell, when she recovered her voice. "This is nothing." There was a note almost like cheer In the old lady's voice. "A little handful of clothes like this isn't worth paying a woman for.
You can save that much this week." She was wringing out one of Dick's shirts. "Dick always sends his shirts to the laundry." There was a note of helpless despair in Nell's voice. "That's wasteful, and it's hard on the clothes." There was a note of finality in the voice. "I'll show you how to iron shirts and you can save that money. The way people are brought up to do, in these days, I never would have believed. You go about whatever you planned to do. I'll have this little dab of clothes out of the way in an hour. It's a good drying day they will be ready to iron by 10 o'clock. I'll have the curtains up by the time Dick comes to dinner."
Nell went into the bedroom and took off her hat. She laughed as she straightened the room, realizing how helpless she was before the vigorous force of her indomitable mother-in-law.
Poor Father Morion! She could see how he had been swept along on the tide of her strong personality. "Now mother, let me hang those things out. and you go and rest a while before dinner," said Nell when she finished preparing the vegetables.
A contemptuous snort, was followed by "T never wear out beds in the day time."
When Dick returned, his mother was ironing shirts in the hot kitchen. "My. this makes me think of my boyhood days." He paused in front of the board and gazed into her flushed

On Monday Nell went to the station to see Mrs. Parsons and the children oft for the east, leaving Dick's mother alone in the house. When she came up the street, she noticed the clothes line stretched In the yard.
Had Mary changed her day for washing? She hurried into the house. Her guest was up to her elbows suds, vigorously rubbing a garment on the board the kitchen curtains had been taken down. Nell stood speechless in the kitchen door. "You had better look around I may not have found
to
face. She smiled grimly and said, "It's a long time since I ironed shirts for you. The farm couldn't hold you long," she sighed, "and your father encouraged your going."
When Nell protested to Dick because she was working so hard he laughed. "Can't you let my mother enjoy herself? She's happy today for the first time since she came.j Poor mother," he added sorrowfully. "She has only one way of expressing affection, that of working for those she loves. Ironing those shirts gives her joy. How terrible not to be able to express love!" and he caught Nell in his arms.
