Allies Admit Need Bat Say Germans Are Still Worse Off—French Talks of End.
PARIS, March 22.—(midnight).— "Ammunition is the perquisite of all but ammunition." That is the essential problem which the war presents in the opinion of Field Marshal Sir John French, commander of the English forces in France and Belgium, according to the Havas agency's correspondent at British headquarters. "Ammunition, is the perquisite of all progress and of all pushing ahoad," Sir John is quoted as saying in an interview with the Havas correspondent. "Everybody needs plenty of ammunition but the Germans need it more than we do. I have had a feeling for some time past that they were being sparing of their shells. They don't

squander them as at the beginning. They are economizing because the lack of nitrates necessary for the manufacture of explosives Is making Itself f*lt in Germany. "Neither is the morale of their troops the same. One gets from them an impression of fatigue and lassitude. They had based all their calculations on a sudden smashing victory. That plan failed and the state of mind of their troops has ruffe-red as a consequence. "Economic difficultiea in the Interior of Germany are dally becoming more serious. No doubt the Germans still are far from famine but they manifestly are hampered in obtaining a food supply and that is a great deal. "I do not believe it will be a long war. Spring promises well for the allies. We are convinced. I and all those here, that a decisive and definite victory awaits

Given By a Buyer Who Went to Study Vashion*. JEFFERSON CITT, Mo., March 23 After waiting two years for the maun who led her ihto a bigamous marriage to be released from prison, Miss Ella Filber met him at, the gafo of the penitentiary with a smile and a kiss of forgiveness, when his sentence expired and was married to him a^ain by the prison chaplain.
John William Strike, while employed s!s a telegraph operator at Kriksville, Mo., courted and married Miss Fllbe.r nearly three years ago. The authorities discovered that Strike had another wife in an eastern state. He was tried and convicted of bigamy and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary.
His second wife came to Jefferson City and obtained employment as seamstress. She never lost an opportunity to see him and was a regular attendant at all cha,pel exercises and public entertainments held at the prison.
Strlkn proved a model prisoner and was released under the three-fourth* rule for #ood behavior. His first wife meantime ha,d obtained a divorce.

JMINESE INQUIRY IN IMITIED STATE
President Denies That XJ. S. Has Either Approved or Disapproved of (Mikado's Attitude.
WASHINGTON, March 23.—President Wilson declared today that the only definite thing that could be said at this time on the Japanese-Chinese negotiations was that the U. S. had addressed an inquiry to Japan concerning her demands on China.
The president declined to discuss the soope of the American negotiations. Another dispatch from Toklo stating that the U. S. had a.pproved of Japan's explanation of the demands was brought to the president's attention and he referred to it as unfounded, pointing cwt that the U. S. had neither approved nor disapproved—having in fact, not yet received Japan's reply.
PEKKVG, March 23.--Conferences regarding the demands made by Japan upon China will be continued at the Japanese legation be*ause the condition of Minister Eki Hloki, who recently was hurt by falling from a horsey will not permit him to go to the Chinese, forerign office for the meetings. A1| several recent, sessions It is reported the representatives of Japan have argued that Japanese immigration Into Mongolia and Manchuria should not be subject to Chinese laws. This proposal Is said to have been persistently opposed.

SPARKS GIVES INTERESTING SER&0N AT SPRUCE CHURCH.
Takes "The Higher Life" as Topic for Sunday .Sermon—Cites Three Important Ideas.
"The Higher Life" was the subject of an interesting sermon Sunday by the Rev. N. W. Sparks, pastor of the Spruce Street African Methodist church, He said: "To get into God's service is by the gateway of the new birth, through which we come by repentance toward God and by faith In the Lord Jesus. When we enter through the door into the spiritual sheepfold, we become new creatures in Christ with His love abiding in our heart and our love fixed and centered In Him in whom we are commanded to abide, to dwell, to stay. Living with Christian love and faithful service is experiencing the higher life. "In this higher life, we are new creatures in Christ Jesus, hating the evils we once loved, and evidencing our lofty him and now calling by letting our light shine, overcoming evil, living above the world, lind growing *in the things that are spiritual and divine, we reflect Him who called himself 'The Way, The Truth, and the Life.' We have no\f desires, new associations and friendships. Indeed, our conversation is new. for we talk of things above. We tell the wonderful story of Christ's love wo talk of Redeeming Grace, and of a free and full salvation. "In the higher life, three ideas should claim the attention of each individual.

The first is that life's greatest meaning is service the Master said: Take up thy cross and follow me,' and be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.' His whole life was one of service. He labored not for self, but for others. We are commanded to be like Him. 'Go thou and do likewise." "The second idea is that life's greatest method is sacrifice. The Christ gave himself for us. We must give ourselves for others—must lose ourselves for Christ and the gospel's sake. We must cast our bread upon the water. "In this higher life ,the third idea is life's greatest end, salvation. When we are saved ourselves, it is our business to save others. A man nearly frozen was rescued from a life boat. As soon as he could speak, he said: 'An other man.' Thus saved himselt he wanted his companion saved. We must not be busy in working out our own salvation, and thus prepare for saving others. When Jesus has found 11s wo should tell others the story."
