V. S Health Service Issues Statement Refuting Claims of Berlin Tuberculosis Specialist.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6.—The seal of official disapproval has been placed upon the tuberculosis "cure" brought to this country in 1913 by Dr. Frederich F. Friedmann, of Berlin. The announcement was made today by the United States public health service in making public an abstract of the report of its investigations in hospitals and laboratories where tests of the Friedmann cultures were made. It declares that conclusions of the American physicians are in line with reports both in this country and abroad which have refuted Hr. Friedmann's claim to the discovery of a specific cure for tuberculosis."

The report further states that the bacteria germs used for Injection by Dr. Friedmann "show that the germs differ from varieties of tubercle bacilli commonly known at the present time and that their injection into smaller animals rendered the subject mors susceptible to tubercular infection instead of more resistant, as was claimed.

No specific cases are reported in the abstract made public nor is any mention made of Dr. Friedmann's met hod iof preparing his culture.

in Paris this afternoon says yesterday passed without any perceptible modification on the front. The fighting between Dixmude and the Lys continued without any marlced advance or retirement.

The text of the communication follows "There Was no perceptible modification during yesterday anywnere on the front. The fighting continued between Dixmude and the Lys with the same characteristics as previously and without any marked advance Or retirement at any point. There was violent cannonading to the north of Aras, and also directed upon Arras without result for the enemy. "The Gertnan effort in Belgium and in the north of France continues. The Germans seem to have undertaken changes in the composition of their forces which are operating in this region, and are reinforcing their reserve corps with active troops with the idea of undertaking a new offensive movement, or at least to mitigate the bloody checks which have been inflicted upon them. "Between the Somme and the Oise and between the Oise and the Meuse there have been minor actions. We have consolidated our advance in the village of Andechy, to the west of Roye. A column of German wagons has been destroyed by the fire of our artillery at long range in the region of Nampoel, to the northeast of the forest of Algue. "Near Berry-au-Bac we have retaken the village of Sapigneul, which had been captured by the Germans. "There has been a furious fight in the Argonne where, as a result of fighting with the bayonet our troops drove the Germans back. "In the Woevre district fresh attacks by the enemy have been repulsed. "To the northeast and to the east of the Grande Couronne of Nancy (the chain of fortified positions surrounding Nancy) in the region of the forest of Perroy, and between Baccarat and Blamont our advance posts have been attacked by mixed detachments of the enemy whose movements everywhere were checked. "Russia announces officially a great Russian victory in Galicia."

SHIP CECILIE STARTS ON VOYAGE TO BOSTON

Big German Vessel Is Accompanied By Two U. S. Destroyers in Change or Ports.

BAR HARBOR. Me., Nov. 6.—The three months' stay here of the interned North German Lloyd line steamer Kronprinzessin Cecilie ended today when, conveyed by the United States destroyers Terry and Ifamson, she started for Boston. The weather was fair with a moderate breeze when the steamer, with one destroyer a short distance ahead and the other close astern, departed at 4 a. m. It was expected that she would reach- Boston this afternoon.

The change of ports was made because it was considered that the anchorage here would be dangerous during the winter storms. Although it was intended to steam within the three mile limit so far as possible, no Interference was anticipated, as the governments at war with Germany had given official assurance that none of their war vessels would molest the steamer on her voyage to Boston.

PROMPT FIRE SERVICE.

Columbia, Mo., a town of 9,662 population, according to the 1910 census, has a volunteer fire department aiding the city Are department. It consists of a motorcycle brigade which carries fire extinguishers. Frequently it is the first to reach the fire, and where this is not great is all that is needed to extinguish It. At the first

whorrT'it fcr fire this squad is mounted and off, each man carrying an extinguisher. Its aid even in a large fire is such as to be appreciable by the time the engines havo come up. Actual experiment has shown the great utility of this work on a Are, and heavy losa has been avoided In so marked a dagrco that the motorcycle squad is regarded as an lndispensible ajunct to the deoartment.

The violent German attacks at Arras indicate, it is thought here, that another attempt is being made to turn the French forces similar to the .effort on Oct. 31, which failed beciuoe the French obtained early information of the German plans.

A dispatch to the Soliel du Midi from Boulogne says that the attacks were made by two columns, one from Lens and the other from Duaal which Joined at Bailleul (seventeen milee northwest of Lille).
