BUZZARD CARRIES OFF DOG.

Fox Terrier Was Brave, But Couldn't Resist the Blrl's Claws. BIRMINGHAM, Oct. 22.—Eagles are said to be game enough and strong enough to carry off almost anything from a man to a cat, but the first instance known when a buzzard carried off a dog was witnessed on a recent afternoon. The incident happened a few miles from Bessemer.

A Ivery brave little fox terrier was endeavoring to chase off a large buzzard that had alighted on the ground. He only succeeded In making the buzzard fly close to the ground fdr a short distance. The buzzard stopped at a short stump and waited for the dog, who came barking around the root of the stump.

The buzzard, seeing his chance, Jumped from the stump, seized the dog in its mouth and claws and flew to thicket nearby.

of what the coffee trade think of the harmfulness of the coffee drug, caffeine, is shown in their efforts to get rid of it—to get a coffee that doesn't contain caffeine!

When they do succeed in getting rid of some of the caffeine drug-content, the result is a weak, "clover-tea" decoction that few appreciate.

But after all their efforts to rid coffee of part of its caffeine, how about the other coffee-drug, "tannin"—about 2 2-5 grains to every cup of coffee?

Tannin is the drug used to tan hides with. Do you know what it does to your stomach? Probably not. Here is what good authorities say about it:—

"Tannic $pid in coffee interferes with digestion."

"The caffeine and theine in coffee and tea are cerebral stimulants, and the tannic acid is an astringent, affecting especially the muscular fibers of the intestinal walls."

"Tannic acid is universally condemned by all authorities as a hindrance to digestion and health.".

Why keep on running the risk of serious interference with health. Why not quit a table beverage that bears in its train a lot of trouble like nervousness, headache, heart, stomach, bowel disturbance, insomnia, etc.

Thousands, suffering from these ills, find it easy to quit coffee have at hand the delicious, nourishing beverage—

INDIA'S POPULATION NOW REPORTED AT 315,000,000

Census of 1,803,657 Square Miles Shows Literates, 18,538,578 Christian, 3,867,203.

LONDON", Oct. 22.—At a cost of only £135,000, and by means of a staff numbering about two million persona, a general census of India was taken on the night of March 10, 1911, t.he results of which are emboided in a large volume issued by the India offlce as a blue book.

The difficulties of taking a census of population numbering about three hundred million over an area of 1,803,657 square miles, were enormous. They were especially great owing, as the report puts it, "to the long lines of railway, the big rivers on wnich boats travel sometimes for days without coming to the bank, the forests to which woodcutters resort, aften for weeks at a time, and the numerous sacred places, wrlch, on occasions, attract many thousands of pilgrims.

People had to be numerated whereevery they were caught. In the case of railways, for instance, all persons traveling by rail who took tickets after 7 p. m. on the night of the census were enumerated either on the platforms or in the trains. The latter were all stopped at 6 a. m. on the following morning, in order to include any travelers who up till then had escaped notice.

In spite of this, and owing to the vast work done preliminarily, the results for the whole of India were received, complete on March 19, and were issued In print the next day. This rapidity, as the report mentions with Justifiable pride, "Is not approached even in the smallest European states."

The summary tables show that the total population of India (including the native states) on the night mentioned was 315,156,296 (as against 294,261,056 ten years previously), of whom 217,586,892 were Mindus, 66,647,299 were Moslems, 10,721,453 were Buddhists and 3,876,203 were Christians. The literates numbered only 18,539,578 persons, and' agriculture claimed the labor of 324,695,909 persons, as against 35,323,041 engaged indirectly.

The shooting took place in front of the residence of James Green, father of the bride.

Crawford, representing the Jackson Hill Coal Co., to require the complaint in the $10,000 damage suit of Victor Van Hentenrych made more specific. BOY KEEPS COURT BUSY.

Up for of Sixth Time on Charge Incorrigibility.

Harvey Miller, 14 years old, a pupil at the Sheridan school, and living at 422 North Ninth street, was before Judge Fortune in the Juvenile Court Thursday morning- on a charge of incorrigibility preferred by the probation officer, Capt B. E. Stahl. The boy was charged with hafving stolen a pair of roHrer skates from another boy, and then when the latter appeared at the Miller home to claim his property with having beaten him. Later the Miller boy played hookey from school to visit the St. Joseph school, where he gave the owner of the skates another beating, it was alleged. The Miller boy has been before Judge Fortune a number of times, but the court told him Thursday morning that he could go back to school until Saturday morning, when he is to appear, and the court will decide what is to be done with him. The parents of the boy, who were in court, rather resented the work of Captain Stahl, but the latter stood his ground and defended his action as being for the best Interest of the boy. s. -.
