LOOKS TOR SUCCESS

Continued From Page One.

torously by the republican party to -create discord in the democratic party, but Bryan showed very fully that the president desires the success of all the democratic candidates In Indiana, and it Is not likely that any denjocrat

Is going to be misled by the efforts of the republicans to convlnoe him that the best way to help the president and his party is to administer defeat to it

Republicans Don't Register. The situation as Chairman Korbly of the democratic committee sees It is very satisfactory, and the indications are that the democrats will have a larger vote than they did In 1912. The registration, according to the returns that have been made to the democratic state committee, shows that the democrats did much better than the republicans in getting out their vote. In

many counties, especially Indianapolis, the republicans failed to register hundreds of their voters, and their total vote this year promises to be much less than they expected. Progressives have made a very vigorous campaign, and have shown more life than some of their opponents anticipated.

It has been the plan of the republican leaders for the last few morjtha to attempt to show that business is bad, and that there is a business depression due to the Wilson policies. Republicans have also made a very bitter attack on the democratic state administration, trying to show that democrats have squandered a great deal of the money belonging to the people. However, it is not believed that republicans have made much headway along this line for the reason that Governor Ralston, Auditor of State O'Brien and others connected with the present administration, have been unable to show that the democrats have not increased the cost of administration of the state government, and that there here been no extravagance, such as the republicans have represented. It has not been denied on behalf of the demoorats that the taxes have been Increased, but solely for taking care of the state educational schools and state

institutions. The democrats, as a matter of fact, reduced the taxes on the general fund out of which the salaries of the state officials and various departments are paid.

Republicans Disappointed. Around through the state many substantial republicans have expressed their disgust at the manner In which the campaign has been conducted. They point cut the following mistakes: First the republican state headquarters opened with a general volley against the progressives which has had the effect of driving even more of them out of the party. The second blunder was the charge of extravagance against Governor Ralston. Ralston immediately marshaled figures which drew some comparisons with the old ECanly-flfhetrlck fiasco of state management and the result was disastrous to the republican committee. The next "toonehead" play was the concerted attack on the president and his policies. The reaction on this was so strong that the republican candidates told republican state headquarters to get off.

The republican state committee is disappointed at the absence of workers from the ranks and the palatial headquarters In the Severln hotel prepared to receive the rfipulMican voters of the state has been a pretty lonesome place. It Is freely predicted here that soon after election there will be a reorganization of the republican state committee with some experienced hands in charge.

Substantial republicans all over the state art not only criticising the low p4aae on which the state orgamtiatXm has mads the campaign, but tfc«y are generally holding aloof from politics in their isspecUfe ooumtlea.

Senator Shlvely has not been able to come to Indiana to take ears at the campaign in his own behalf, as hs has been detained at Washington, whore he has taken a prominent part In carrying out important policies of the president. However, his standing before the people In his district Is so good that the president has written a personal letter Indorsing it.

Indications are that Beveridge will run twenty-five thousand votes ahead of the progressive ticket of two years ago, many members of the republican party voted for Beverldge two years ago, and are determined to vote for Beverldge this time.

Etagh Th. Miller, the republican nominee for senator, has not made much of an impression in the campaign for the reason he is not regarded as a political speaker, and has not been able to arouse much Interest or enthusiasm on that account.

Miller is npt a very strong factor, and whatever votes he receives, will be the votes that are cast for the republican ticket. The progressives are making: a hard fight In Indianapolis to elect their congressional and local candidates.

For the remainder of the campaign Chairman Korbly and his associates at democratic headquarters will spend moBt of their time strengthening organization in various counties.
