GERMANS ADVANCE

orsued Across Frontier After Re*.t ported Expulsion from East i* Prussia by Germans.

LONDON, Oct 13.-8:05 a. rrv—Reuter's Amsterdam correspondent sends the following German official communication concerning events in the eastern theatre of war: "After their expulsion from East Prussia the Russian armies were pursued across the frontier. The center of the German military operations is now in Poland. The whole of Poland west of the Vistula is now in German possession, the Russians occupying only Warsaw. "The few kilometres lost by the Germans in Russian territory near the East Prussian frontier were of little importance, as it was never intended definitely to occupy or govern Suwalki. "It is not true that the siege of Ossowetz has been abandoned as the fortress has never been besieged. "During our retreat to the East Prussian frontier our troops nowhere were defeated, but 6n the contrary repulsed attacks of the Russians."

THE HAGUE (via London.) Oct. 13. wThe Austrian legation here has issued the following: "The rapid advance of the AustroHungarian troops along the river San resulted, Oct. 11, in the entire withdrawal of the Russian investing force from Przemysl, Galicia, which has been occupied by Austrian relief troops. "The retreating Russians were attacked at many places along their route and a number of prisoners were taken.

CERMANS ENTER GHENT

LONDON, Oct. 13—2:40 a. m.— The Eelgian town of Ghent Is now occupied by the Germans, according to an Amsterdam dispatch to the Reuter Telegram company. Uhlans have arrived at Selzaete, a short distance from Ghent, and the commander announced that six thousand soldiers must be quartered in the village.

Still

British Admiral Says Germans Maintain Menace. LONDON, Oct. 13.—Notwithstanding the reassuring statement issued by the home office last Thursday to the effect that the spy system established by Germany in this country has been completely broken up, Admiral Charles Lord Beresford, retired, is convinced that it still exists and constitutes a grave menace to the safety of the country. In a letter published today, Lord Charles calls upor. his countrymen "to take Strong action with regard to the crowd of alien enemies in our midst." He urges that "meetings be held in every town and that resolutions be adopted protesting against the present state of affairs," and sent to the prime minister.

The proclamation of martial law declares there is reason to believe that the government of Western South Africa is endeavoring to corrupt other citizens of the union with promises of the establishment of a republic in South Africa.

The official statement issued in Paris this afternoon declares that the allies are making progress along nearly the entire line of battle.

It has been decided to remove the Belgian government to France. King Albert however, will remain with his troops in the field. Some of the officials of the Belgian government and the members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Belgium already have left Ostend for Havre.

The Germans are reported to have occupied Ghent, and yesterday a German aviator dropped bombs on Ostend.

The Germans are continuing their endeavors to persuale the civil population of Antwerp to return to their homes otherwise there is little news of the actual situation at this Belgian port, now in the hands of the Germans.

The eastern arena of the war has recorded no particular activity, other than continued preparations for a decisive combat in Russian Poland along a battle front which probably will extend from Kalisz to Lodz, to Pioterko, to Kief and to Buck, in Galicia. Germany claims to hold all the western part of Russian Poland with the exception of Warsaw, and it is becoming clear that the German military operations in the eastern theater are being concentrated in Poland.

Vienna declares that the entire Russian force investing Przemysl has been withdrawn. Russia makes no reference today to the situation at przemysl, but it is reported that Russian forces are continuing to advance in East Prussia and that the soldiers of Emperor Nicholas hold the entire district of Lyck.

The Kaiser Wilhelm canal, according to an Amsterdam report, has been closed to ordinary traffic for the duration of the war.

Prince George of 8ervSa, brother of the crown prince, is reported to have been mortally wounded.. Prince Oleg, son of Grand Duke Constantino of Rus1sia, has died of wounds received in battle.

There has been a brief armistice at Kiao Chow, China, to bury the dead. The governor of this German territory is endeavoring to arrange for the departure of all non-combatants remaining in Tsing-Tau.

Wonder-Worker for Sore Eyes or Lids

There's no need of anyone going about with tired, sore or inflamed eyes, granular eyelids, or other results of working the eyes overtime, gettin dirt or catching cold in them. No need, wearing troublesome spectacles or glasses In a great many cases where they are now worn. No excuse for letting the trouble get worse or more complicated.

There's no sense in experimenting with experimental eye remedies. Dr. Pettit's Bye Salve has been sold and recommended by druggists—prescribed by physicians—used by hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, for 107 years! Surely it's no experiment.

Dr. Pettit's Eye Solve Is not only marvelouslv effective, but it's agreeable to use—such a soothing after-effect. If you are bothered with smarting, watery, itching, aching, burning, blurring, dull, weak, reddened, congested, ulcerated, or discharging eyes, styes, pink eye, nervous, granulated, drooping or swoolen lids—get a box of this wonder-working salve, try it—and go

WAR SUMMARY

Martial law has been declared throughout the Union iof South Africa as a result of the discovery of a rebellion in the northern part of the Cape province, which adjoins German Southwest Africa. .Lieut.-Col. Maritz, a Boer officer together with a number of his officers and men, has gone over to the German forces of the German protectorate and is in rebellion against the government of the union.

both on the Vistula and about 60 miles apart. In order to take up these positions the Germans have been compelled to abandon strong positions along the river Warthe and avail themselves of the transportation facilities of Russian railroads, which are incomparably poorer than wha/t they have been accustomed to. The Russians are described as keen to engage the enemy in a country of their own choosing and near the base of their supplies.

Russian Victory Reported. The Germans are said to be s#ll retiring in the direction of East Prussia, and in Petrograd there is a report of a Russian victory near Rachki, midway between Augustowo and Suwalki which resulted in the capture of several German batteries sent from ^Koenigsberg.

Berlin declares that all of the western part of Russian Poland is now in the possession of Germans and that every place wesit of the Vistula with the exception of Warsaw, is in their hands. It would appear to be a fact that no heavy engagements yet have been fought in this region, most of the fighting being between screens of cavalry.

Should the A st ro German forces suffer defeat along the battle front now forming, the way would be opened, it is being argued in London, for the invasion of Silescia which, next to the Rhine provinces, is the richest district of Germany. But it is not anticipated even in the event of their victory that the Russians will advance with any great speed. The

topography

of the country and the lack of trailsports preclude the possibility of anything like the German sweep through Belgium.

Russia has suffered her most severe marine loss of the war in the Binking of the cruiser Pallada, which has been torpedoed by a German submarine in the Baltic. In every theatre of the war Germany evidently is resuming the offensive with unparalleled vigor and British naval observers are inclined to expect, some co-operative display of activity by the German fleet.

Germans To Fall Back.

Along the battle line of the Aisne the very brief official communication given ouit in Paris declares that what little change there has been In the situation favors the allies. The chief alteration in this line, however, seems to be its disposition to stretch toward the shores of the channel.

A most interesting bit of news from the -western front is found in the reports from various sources that several of the forts around Antwerp are still occupied by the defenders. If this is true it is argued here that possibly the expected reinforcements for the German right wing may not be sent forward in time,

Reports also continue to reach Dondon that the great activity of the German cavalry near Lille is a sceening movement to cover the retreat of the army of Gen. Von Kluck. Such a retreat is said even to be under way in the north and to the northeast

FRENCH CLAIM PROGRESS.

Official Announcement Says Notable Advances Have Been Made. PARIS, Oct. 13.-6:08 p. m.—The following official announcement was given out in Paris this afternoon: "On our left wing our forces have resumed the offensive in the reglans of Hazenbrouck and of Bethune against detachments of the enemy composed in large part, of cavalry coming from the front along Billeull, Estaires and Labassee. "The town of Lille, held by a territorial detachment, has been attacked and occupied by a German army corps. "Between Arras and Albert we have made notable progress. "On the center also we have made progress In the region of Berry-Au-Bac, and we have advanced toward Souain, in the west of the Argonne and north of Malancourt. "Between the Argonne and the Meuse, on the right bank of the Meuse, our troops, who held the heights of the Meuse to the east of Verdun, have advanced. Cavalry Advances, However, Declared to Increase Difficulties. PARIS, Oct 13.-6:30 a. m.—The efforts of the Germans who are fighting hard In an endeavor to effect a turning movement to the north of the long battle line in France continue to hold the interest of the observers of the war. According to an official announcement, German cavalry some days ago had advanced in the west to as far as Cassel, (27 miles northwest of Lille). These German forces now, however, are said to extend to Hazobrouck (5 miles south of Cassel).

If this should be true it is considered that it will make somewhat greater the difficulties of the Germans in bringing success to their efforts. This section of the war zone continues the scene of particularly violent actions, the opposing squadrons fighting desperately to gain the slightest advantage on which so much may depend.

The Germans, at the same time, are \w

not lessening their attempts to find at other points on the battle line weak spots in the allies' front. All their efforts, it is said, aire being met successfully by their French and English opponents.

The latest German flag captured by the French belonged to an active regiment which was part of the corps stationed at Stettin. This act, according to the French, indicates that the Germans have concentrated on the French frontier forces which ordinarily would be assigned to guard the Russian border.
