INDEPENDENT TICKETS UNUSUALLY PLENTIFUL
Republican, Democrat and Progressive Candidates to Make Race for Office on New Slates.
There will probably be more special tickets to be voted for by Vigo county voters this fall than ever before in the history of the county. The failure of the republicans to have primary candidates for township offices in Prairieton and Otter Creek townships, and of the progressives to have such candidates in Fayette township, necessitated the filing of petitions for their candidates in these townships under special designs, the attorney general having decided that neither party could nominate candidates by petition and have them run under their party designation where they had failed to have candidates at the primary election.
Yesterday afternoon Thomas A. Anderson, present democratic townsnlp trustee of Honey Creek townBhip, who is filling out a term to which he was appointed to fill a vacancy, filed his petition to run as a candidate for trustee In that townsrlp on the Citizens' ticket His petition was Bigned by twenty-one qualified voters of the township and asked that a girl carrying a school book be adapted as the emblem for the ticket. This was found Impossible, and a schoolhouse was selected as the emblem to be printed at the head of the ticket.
WILL BEAT BEEF BARONS.
Texas Ranchers Planning to Evade Monopolists. N27W YORK, Oct. 10.—There are S,000,000 head of fine beef cattle ready for slaughter In Texas, and the beet trust won't make a penny on any ot them, according to a statement by Joseph Hartigan, secretary of the New York commission on food supply.
The profit that the beef trust doesn't make will go Into the pockets of consumers In the form of lowered cost ot living, Hartigan explained. "An organization of Texas ranchers is now being formed," he said, "to provide for the receiving, distribution and sale in New York of Texas beef, Independent of any monopoly. Soon after January they will be ready to sell beef direct to this city. A plant has been started near Galveston for packing and canning meat by a new process, and, with |t ha '-establishment of refrigerator eteamshlps, the Texas beef could be brought to this city Inside of two •weeks. It Is a much superior quality to ,the Argentine brand."

Sutton Says State Should Enlarge on Work Done By Government. John Sutton, of "West Terre Haute, tone of the prominent mine workers of this section, Is advocating a movement for a state mine rescue car similar to the government rescue car, which is doing such good work in the coal fields. Sutton was one of the original members of ambulance corps of Bristol, England. He says that so much good has been accomplished by the mine rescue work that the basic principles should be taught In the schools In mining sections, and that the state •hould support a rescue car to operate between the different coal fields of Indiana.

Given Charge of Estate of Late Mrs. Virginia Gray. In the Probate Court Saturday afternoon In the suit of Rose Ladles' Aid society against Charles L. Melvin and others, regarding a certain piece of (property on North Fourth Btreet, the Terre Haute Trust company was named as trustee of the property, which had been left by the will of the late Mrs. Virginia Gray for the benefit of a relative of hers, Mrs. Moyer. The trustee had neglected the property and It had been allowed to run down, and the action was to secure the naming of a trustee that would look after the property and keep It In good repair.

«tate Department Warns Public About Allegeed Proposals. WASHINGTON, Oct. 10.—Acting Secretary of State I^anslng tonight Issued a warning to the American public to disbelieve stories of peace proposals by the United States government unless they were given out officially. "All such stories in the future, unless given out from official sources should be taken as the invention of persons who have some motive other than peace in setting afloat rumors of this sort," declared Lansing.
CABLE THEFT CHARGED.
Charles Curtis was arrested and taken to jail Saturday afternoon by JDetective Fedderson for stealing sev-enty-five pounds of copper cable from the Liggett mine, five miles west of Terre Haute. He admitted he had stolen the cable and said he was trying to sell it to a Junk dealer.

A "Bankers' special" train passed through Terre Haute Saturday afternoon on the Vandalia, carrying a party of Missouri bankers to the National convention of bankers, which will meet in Richmond, Va. The train was composed of nine cars and was fitted •with every convenience for traveling.
TILLEY FACES CHARGE.
Attorney L. F. Tilley was arrested {Saturday afternoon by Bicj'cleman Huffman for violating the city ordinance against driving an automobile without a license. He was released to appear in Police Court Monday morning.
