GOVERNMENT EXPERT ATTACKS HOG CWM

Riley Township Herd Used as Subject of Demonstration1—Twentysix Inoculated.

Dr. Paul A. Mollan, of the United States department of agriculture, was here Tuesday to conduct the first work under the new department of wiping out hog cholera. Dr. Mollan selected a herd in Riley township and was assisted in the work by Dr. C. C. Mcintosh, of this city.

Dr. Mollon in speaking, of the work which is expected to minimize the annual loss of $18,000,000 in hogs a year in this country, said of the work the department is doing: "Four counties have been selected in Indiana for these demonstrations. Montgomery county was given the first experimental station, to ascertain whether or not the serum was effective in a large community, or in communities larger than in the tests that had been made. The work was started with headquarters at Crawfordsville under the leadership of Dr. U. G. Houck. The results of treatment were so successful that the 'agricultural committee presented a bill to congress in February this year in the form of an emergency appropriation, the result being that congress appropriated $500,000 for the eradication of hog cholera, divided as follows:

Funds Providod.

"Fifty thousand dollars for inspection serum plants all commercial plants shipping interstate obliged to have federal inspection $300,000 for county demonstration work, allowing the bureau of animal industry, under whose supervision the work is conducted, to increase the number of com tlea to seventeen. Hendricks county, Indiana, was added to this list, Indiana now having two counties where demonstration work is being conducted. The government takes entire charge and the work is done entirely gratis. All the government expects them to do is to accept their theories, clean up the premises and try to get rid of the Infection. "The remaining $150,000 is to be devoted to the educational work and the co-operation of the state agricultural college, consisting of lectures, meetings, farm demonstrations and organization of hog cholera clubs and general educational work. "The results of treatment in Montgomery county from July 16, 1913, to January 1, 1914, were as follows: One hundred twenty-eight well herds were treated containing 4,675 hogs, lost only twenty four, or fifty one one hundredths of one per cent 268 herds containing 9,523 diseased hogs were treated, the loss being 1,013 or 10.63 per cent. This was divided Into two forms of treatment where the serum alone was used we treated 956 hogs and lost sixteen or 1.06 per cent. Of '"""diseased hogs treated with serum alone there were 4,562, the loss being 984 or 19.5 per cent. This was the largest per cent of losses but the hogs treated were In the last stage of the disease, considering which the results were very good. "Under the simultaneous method, of well hogs 3,719 treated, we lost only •V eight or .021 of one per cent On the diseased herds under the same treatment there were treated 4,961 and we lost only 119 or 2.39 per cent. "The government statistics regarding hog cholera losses through the

United States are 80 per cent losses where no preventive treatment has been used. Altogether, there were 14,198 hogs treated, with the result that

there were only 112 abscesses, showing that abscesses are not necessary for the treatment if properly administered and the farmer does his part In keeping the hogs in clean pasture for three or four days in order to allow the needle wounds to heal.

Record Kept of Treatment. "On the serum alone treatment means the Injection of a suitable amount of anti-hog cholera serum. It is given to suckling pigs and pigs weighing less than fifty pounds and to sows with pig or about to farrow. Simultaneous treatment means the injection of a small quantity of hog cholera blood in addition to the serum. This creates an immunity which lasts for life, immunity from the serum treatment alone ranging from a period of from two to six weeks, depending entirely upon the health of the individual animal and the care it receives. "The work done Tuesday was in the herd of George Geisselbrecht in Riley township. Twenty-six hogs were inrioeulated, all high temperatures. This was about as severe a test of treatment as it can be put to. Each hog is tagged with a metal number and a record of the treatment Is to be kept. The case of deaths and recoveries will be reported to the. Purdue station. The tests were witnessed by about twentyfive farmers, a very good demonstration."
