THE STYLE.SHOW.
The manner in which Terre Haute merchants have., supported the Fall ^Style Show must be encouraging to the promoters. It Is cef-tainly gratifying to the business interests of the city and, too, to everyone who wishes to see
Terre Haute forge ahead and become the commanding commercial figure she should be through her natural re sources and her location. ... Terre Haute is the natural trading center of a great section of the Wa bash valley. Widespread interest throughout this section in the Fall Style Show indicates in a measure what can be done when there is concerted effort on the part of the mercantile interests. In this case the efforts of those-who have planned for and carried the Fall Style Show to succcessful achievement have redounded to the benefit of the entire community, and the enterprising merchants are entitled to the favorable consideration of all of the business interests and, in fact, of all of the people of the city, ffeven this early indications point to the fact, of all of the people of the city. Even this early all Indications point to the of its supporters and few things are more beneficial to a community than .the quickening of its commercial pulse through methods j^hich, for tliat community, means more -friends. CAMPAIGN TEXT BOOK.
Achievement is the keynote of -ihe text book Issued today by the national democratic committee, and the striking thing about the book is, that in the very first pages it sets out the laws enacted by congress for the benefit of the people and boldly asks critics of the president and of congress what

particular laws they would repeal if the people elected them to office. First of the chapters dealing with In dividual achievements is that entitled "The Wonderful Story of- Watchful Waiting It tells authoritatively of the handling of the Mepcican. situation from its incipiency down to the recent issuance of President's Wilson's order vHtihdrawing the American troops from Vera Cruz*
Following this chapter are quotations from speeches of Senator Penrose, of Pennsylvania, and other republican leaders condemning in unmeasured terms the policy of "watchful waiting" and excerpts from a letter and speech of Col. Theodore Roosevelt in which he brands the foreign policy of Woodroxtr Wilson as cowardly and says he feels it his bounden duty to resign from the Outlook in order that he may be free to fight the present democratic administration for the manner in which it has handled our international affairs
Trust legislation, the federal reserve act and the Underwood-Simmons tariff law are dealt with from every viewpoint in more than one chapter, each of which should be read by all who are earnestly in search of information on these important subjects.
A powerful appeal to reason is the chapter setting forth what the democratic congress has done toward contributing to the success of the Wilson administration. The president and congress are described as the "big team." Mr. Wilson himself has said time and again that without the support of congress he could have accomplished little. This chapter shows that not only was the support given, but that there was co-operation of a kind practically unprecedented In the history of this country.
THE HOME GUARD.
It pains one to see some political orator arise to the stump and tell the people that the diplomatic nations of this nation are all awry that our af fairs are in the hands of amateurs and that the result Is a bunglesome lot of truck. On the contrary, it must be gratifying to every fair-minded citizen to read the high tribute paid to our ambassador at Berlin, ex-Judge Gerard, by the former British ambas sador, Sir William Edward Goschen After speaking of the great assistance he had rendered under very trying circumstances, especially in arranging for the safety of stranded British subjects the ex-ambassador says:
He (Gerard) extricated many of these from extremely difficult situations, at some personal risk to himself. His calmness and savoir-faire and his firmness in dealing with the Imperial authorities ga(ve full assurance that the protection of British subjects and in terests could not have been left in more efficient and able hands.
This statement Is particularly interesting because of the charge that the Wilson administration has filled the higher diplomatic posts with incompetent and untried men. As a matter of fact nearly all our present ambassadors abroad are men of a distinctly better

type than those whom they succeeded Mr. Gerard's immediate predecessor was a republican with a strong penchant for stock speculation. His diplomatic usefulness was ended when firm-of brokers-sued liittl fbf something .like $75,000, said t6 have been lost in an unsuccessful flyer. BUSINESS IS BUSINESS.
Extra space used by the merchants in the .Tribune today suggests the large influence which advertising plays in the sphere of successful business enters prise. The business world a few days ago was afforded a striking example of this truth.
The estate of the late Warren Sears, founder of Sears, Roebuck & Co., Chicago, stands as the greatest monument ever erected by advertising. It also is the greatest concrete example of what a combination of brains and advertising can accomplish.
It has been reported that at the age of 17, while a railway telegraph operator, the idea of selling mail articles by mall originated [with him. His first mail-order'venture, with advertising as the sales force, was started In Minneapolis in 1886. The mail order house of Sears, Roebuck & Co. was incorporated and moved to Chicago in 1890.
In less than a quarter of a century, a fortune estimated at $25,000,000 was amassed by Mr. Sears, a million dollars a year, through the medium of advertising.
Those who doubt the efficacy of advertising should not attribute their skepticism to lack of faith in advertising, but to lack of faith in themsel|ves.
Courage and advertising is piling up, new fortunes, and will pile up many more.
GERMANY'S ALIBI.
Judging from the many official statements issued by the German government relative to the destruction of Louvain, the kaiser feels that the world at large does not consider that sniping, practiced by the Belgian citizens against the Germans, justified the pillage and destruction of Louvain. Too, it is likely that no more deeds of deliberate and needless vandalism will be commmitted by either side. The damage which was done to Rhelms cathedral is appalling, but the destruction camet -M an incident in actual warfare and military necessity Ts" offered as an excuse. If the forts fall there can be no need of bombarding the city. Street fighting may work large damage, but it cannot destroy.
Antwerp, .aside from its importance as a great center of modern1 commerce and industry, is one of the most beautiful cities of the world and one of the richest in glorious monuments of the past The cathedral has been the wonder and inspiration of six centuries. It is almost as bold a mark for the artillerymen as was the noble minster of Rhelms, but Antwerp is not part of a vast battle line, and cannonading would be worse than wanton. Throughout the city are scattered remarkably beautiful buildings of venerable antiquity. There are, too, collections of the Flemish and butch masters which are [valuable almost beyond computation.
Whether German assailants or Belgian defenders win at Antwerp, the world has a right to demand that the splendor and beauty of the city be spared. Neither side should forget that the war is waged against the men and nations of today, and not against men %vho lived and wrought and died centuries before.
Why doesn't Sulzer go and make a party of his own instead of constantly trying to butt in on another fellow's personal property?
It scarcely seems as if the day was passing right unless news comes that Secretary Bryan has signed another peace treaty.
A world's championship series with out the participation of Professional Goat Snodgrass will not seem just right.
The folding of wings on the French battlefield does not indicate a preparation for repose.

HOROSCOPE FOR A DAY

Caution is advised for today. Astrologers find that Mars, Mercury and (Tranus are all strongly adverse, while .Tupiter alone is friendly.
Although Jupiter usually rules as a planet that offers success and furtune to those who use well-trained minds, the evil power of Mars and Mercury makes necessary the most conservative action in all affairs involving money, professional reputation or future success:
The sign is encouraging for the activities of scholars, university students, lawyers, statesmen and legislators of every rank.
Bankers are subject to a rule indicating large opportunity and exacting initiative. They are warned to prepare for severe strain in a fortnight, when financial complications will disturb industrial conditions in this country.
Owing to the fact that the autumnal ingress took place in the cusp t.f the eighth house, afflicted by Saturn, mortality among notable persons in Washington, and the chief cities of the country is persistently predicted.
Persons whose birthdate it is have rather a threatening augury. Men may become involved in litigation which they lose money. They should be ruled by the friends who will go to their assistance.
Children born on this day may be impetuous, restless and impatient by nature, but they probably will have an easy time in life, because relatives and influential friends will look after them. Girls may marry most fortunately.
