ROOSEVELT TO COME FOR CAMPAIGN TALK

Announces That He Will Be in Terre Haute on September 26 for Two Hour Stay.

Former President Theodore Roosevelt will make a two hours' stay in Terre Haute on the afternoon of Saturday, September 26, enroute from St. Louis to Indianapolis, where he is to speak at night. He will come by the Big Four, Dr. C. E. Ervin, county chairman of the progressives, having been advised to this effect Wednesday afternoon. A meeting of all progressive candidates, committeemen and workers has been called for Thursday night to make arrangements for the coming of the progressive leader. The meeting will be held in the office of Robert B. Stimson, on Ohio street. The difficulty of securing a hall large enough to accommodate the large crowd expected may necessitate an out of doors meeting, and this is one of the things to be considered at Thursday night's meeting.

Progressives will open their campaign in Fayette township Friday night when Otis E. Gulley, candidate for congressman in the Fifth district, will speak at New Goshen. Robert B. Stimson, candidate for prosecutor, "Wliliam T. Gleason, candidate for Circuit judge, and George Klatte, candi date for sheriff, will speak at the meet ing and outline their policies.

ROAD BONDS ARE DELIVERED.

Citizens Raise Bonus to Insure Highway Improvement. County Treasurer T. J. Dailey went to Indianapolis Thursday to deliver to the Fletcher American National bank the $7,800 of gravel road bonds issued for the building of the Hollingsworth road, in" Fayette township. The bonds were issued some time ago, but owing to the condition of the financial market, there were no bidders for the bonds except on the condition that a bonus should be paid for their sale. Treasurer Dailey made personal canvass of the property owners along the line of the proposed improvement, who wbuld be most materially benefitted by -til® birilding of the road, and raised $160 as a bonus, and upon the acceptance of the bonds by the Indianapolis people, work on the road will begin at once, in the hope of completing it before the bad weather begins.

GOOD ROADS MEETING.

Luke W. Duffey, secretary of the Indiana highways commission, announces that a good roads meeting will be held in Terre Haute for this congressional district. The announcement makes a plea for scientific, permanent road improvement, a policy Terre Haute and Vigo county has lately adopted.

World's Series Challenge Not to Be Considered By Majors. CHICAGO, Sept. 17.—The world's series challenge of President Gilmore, of the Federal league, to the national corrrr.iEE.ion, is accepted here as merely completing the record of Gilmore's campaign to receive official recognition of his organization as being of major league calibre.

That the challenge was announced a month ago and while President Johnson, of the American league, and President Comiskey, of the White Sox, could not be located here today it was recalled that both of them at the time of the announcement vigorously asserted they would have no relations with the "outlaw" except on a distinctly unfriendly basis.

This attitude has not been changed, which is no surprise to Gilmore.

CINCINNATI. O., Sept. 17.—"I have nothing whatever to say at present," said Chairman August Herrmann, of the national commission, when asked today if he intended answering the letter from President Gilmore, of the Federal league, requesting the latter league be allowed to be represented in the world's championship baseball series.. "I have received Gilmore's letter, hut have nothing to say in regard to it at present," continued Herrmann.
