MINERS' FIELD WORK HERE IS COMPLETED
Men in Charge of First Aid and Rescue Meet Declare It Most Successful.
The United States bureau of mines completed its field maneuvers at the Glen Ayr mine at 1:30 oclock Tuesday afternoon bringing to an end the work of the men sent here by the government in connection with the first aid and mine rescue meet held in this city. Many of the representatives of the bureau will leave at once for assignments in the west and others will return to Pittsburgh.
J. W. Paul, chief of the mine rescue work, said the promoters of the meet should be gratified because of the cooperation they had secured from the miners who are the men who profit most by the first aid and mine rescue work. He praised the bureau men for their good work and the miners for taking part In the meet. He also commended the state mine Inspectors and thanked the Freeman brothers for the use of the Glen Ayr mine.
The first aid and mine rescue meet and the field maneuvers have been declared successful in every way. The meet was carried out along the line of plans made by Mr. Paul, who Is endeavoring to systemize the meets that are being held in different parts of the country.
BRINGS SUIT AGAINST CITY.
Construction Company Seeks to Recover on $600 Check. The city of Terre Haute was sued Tuesday afternoon by the Murray Construction Co. for $600, claiming that a check on the First National bank filed with a bid for a street contract has been cashed by the city, which refuses to return the money, notwithstanding the fact that the company was not awarded the contract. The check was for the siim of $520, given as a guaranty that the company would ^.ner into contract if awarded it, the street in question being Ohio street. The complaint alleges that selveral demands have been made on the board of public works, with which the check was filed, for the return of the check or money, but this has been refused. A. L. Miller and McGregor & Harris, of Brazil, represent the plaintiff.
Charles P. Mancourt, of the board of works, said the case was merely one of forfeiture. "The company was awarded the contract but for some reason refused to accept it. The check was therefore considered forfeited and deposited with City Treasurer Dailey, as is customary. It was not cashed by us, as stated."
GRAND JURY INDICTS EIGHT.
Returns True Bills Charging Larceny and Assault and Battery. The grand jury returned eight indictments Tuesday afternoon, and was discharged by Judge Fortune, only three of the indicted persons being under arrest. They are Archie Adams, petit larceny, stealing two coats from Silas Hoskins on August 2 James Green, breaking into a store with felonious Intent, In breaking into the tailor shop of Herman Grouf on Wabash near Eighth Thomas Mace, assault and battery with Intent to rob William Johnson. The other five indictments were withheld from publication until the persons indicted have been arrested. Ignoramuses were returned in the cases of William Weiss, charged with robbery, and William Cameron, charged with stealing tools from the Terre Haute Handle factory.
