Continued From Page One.

ernor stepped In and settled it In a manner that relieved the city of Its trouble* and was regarded as fair by the street car company and its employes. Throughout the trying negotiations between the street car company and its employes the governor has acted as the peace maker. In fact he has been trusted by both sides so implicitly that further trouble has been averted.

The governor believes that the last legislature established a record for the enactment of progressive legislation that has not been equalled by any legislature in the country. He is confident that as soon as the record is explained that it will prove convincing with a majority of the voters. The governor Is prepared to explain the enactments of the legislature and to deal freely with the charges of extravagance the republicans are making.

State Leaders Invited.

A great deal of interest is manifested In the forthcoming speech of the governor. Letters have been received from many leaders in party counties, saying that they will be present for the meeting. While Chairman Korbly and the members of the organization regret that Senator Shively and members of the congressional delegation can not be here for the meeting, they are confident that the governor will more than measure up to the requirements of the occasion. The chances are that the governor will bear the brunt of the speech making, for the reason that it is not yet apparent when the members of congress wil be able to come home to take part in the campaign.

The coming week will witness a great deal of activity on the part of tjie democrats. On the dayTollowing the governor's speech there will be meetings in many counties. The nominees on the state ticket are preparing to make a tour of the state immediate ly. They will travel in automobiles and will address many organization meetingss. There will be at least fifty 'meetings next week under the auspices of the state committee. Early in October, many prominent speakers will come to Indiana to take part'in the campaign.

Senator Shively will make one speech in each congressional district, whether congress adjourns early enough for him to take more prominent part in

the campaign. He hopes to devote all of October to the campaign in Indiana. Vice-presiclent Marshall is coming for

at least four speeches and Senator Kern expects to speak in every district. Beveridge in Terre Haute. I

The progressives open their campalgm at Terre Haute, Monday night, with Beveridge as the head-liner. Roosevelt is to^ome to the state in October. The republicans will open their campaign on Thursday night. Senator Borah, of Idaho, will be the principal speaker. The fact that the republicans have been forced to go outside the state for-a speaker to open' their campaign regarded as being significant of the plight in which the party finds itself at this time.

The betting is now opening here and it shows that the democratic ticket is ftn odds-on favorite for first place. In fact, it is not likely that there will be much betting on the democrats for the reason that it is taken for granted that their state ticket will be elected. There is some betting now on second place. Beveridge and Hugh Th. Miller, republican, are about a stand-off in the betting as far as second place is concerned, although the republican leaders pretend to be confident that Beveridge will not get aa many votea as he did two years ago and that Miller is going to run far ahead of him. However, the shrewd election bettors are waiting for the de-

velopments of the next month before they risk much on second place.

The Power Behind.

A story was related today regarding the conference at the republican state committee rooms last Wednesday, which tends to support the statements of the progressive leaders, that the leadership of the republican party is practically the same as it was in 19i2 and several years prior thereto.

At the republican state convention a plank was adopted in the platform admitting that the party management had not been what it should have been but promising that in the future there would be a place for every one that desired to contribute. This plank was adopted for the purpose of inducing former republicans to return to the party.

Chairman Hays has mailed thousands of copies of this plank to former republicans who voted the progressive ticket in 1912 and whose support the republicans are greatly desirous of this year. Some of the members of the old guard in the republican party have realized if they are ever to get the progressives back in line it will be necessary for them to make it appear that the leadership is in the hands of progressive republicans.

In line with this policy very little has been said by members of the organization regarding James E. Watson, James A. Hemenway and other members of the Fairbanks machine who has been managing the party for several years. The plan has been to keep these well known figures in the background.

At the conference at the Severin hotel for the purpose of outlining the plan of campaign it is understood that Watson took the most prominent part

and that at his suggestion more than at anyone else's It was decided that the slogan of the campaign on the republican side shall be "More tariff and less taxes." Watson, of course, is one of the high tariff men of the Joe Cannon type and more tariff is in line with his principal beliefs.

One of the significant things about this conference of the republican leaders was that when a list of those present was given out the name or Watson was omitted. The progressive leaders say that the failure of the republicans to include Watson in this list was premeditated on their part and that it was done for the purpose of making it appear that he' had had no part whatever in the deliberations.

Progressives' Reply.

The progressives insist that this conference not only shows that Watson and the old guard are framing up the policy of the republican party just the same as they did when they managed the Taft forces in 1912 and thefr are attempting to make it appear that the party is now in charge of progressive republicans.

The progressive leaders are asserting that the situation in the republican forces has not changed and that there is no reason for the members of the new party to be deceived. At the progressive state committee rooms the claim was also made that very few progressives are, returning to the republican party and that on the other hand the progressives are gaining ground at the expense of the republican organization and the progressives are arranging to open their campaign next week and to make a vigorous fight in every county.

AWFUL BATTLE COMING.

So Declares Evangelist Tlndall—Old Heroes Will Return. "The Battle of Gog and Magog. This will be the subject of Evangelist John Tindall's sermon at the Washington Avenue Chautauqua tonight. Heat has been provided and the pavilion will be comfortable. "The battle of Gog and Magog" will so far excel the present conflict in magnitude that there can be no comparison," Tindall says. "All of -the wicked men who have ever lived upon the earth will take part. Many of the long-lived stalwart race which lived before the flood will be there. Great generals and captains of all ages, men who have never lost a battle will take part. It will be the gathering of all the hosts of the wicked to battle against the city of New Jerusalem. Some of the generals that are taking active part in the present conflict will be among those who in counsel with Satan shall endeavor to take the city of God."

LEDEBER ON WAY HOME. Merchant Caught In Europe By War 8alls on Olymplo.

B. Feibelman, of the firm of Lederer and Feibelman, last night received a cablegram from Julius Lederer, senior member of the firm, that the latter was sailing for home from London, having been marooned in Europe for some time because of the breaking out of the war. The brief message was as follows: "Sailing on the Olympic. All well."

The message from Mr. Feibelman brought general relief as there had been much anxiety regarding his safety as the result of the conflict.
