FRENCH FILES REPORT ON ARMY
Gives Public News of British Operations Since the Landing in France Was Hade,
LONDON. Sept. 10.—2:30 a. m.—The text of the report of Field Marshal Sir| John French, In command of the British forces in France, covering the Brit- I lsh operations since they landed In France, was made public today.
The report Is addressed to Earl I Kitchener, the secretary of war, and its publication Indicates that the government Is responding to the public demand for fuller Information on the progress of operations so far as the British forces are concerned in France.
The report is published In the Ixmdon Gazette, the official organ. In part] it says: "The transportation of the troops from England by rail and sea was effected in the best order and without I check. Concentration was practically completed on the evening of Friday, August 21, and I was able to make dlapositions to more the force during Saturday to positions I considered most favorable from which to commnce the operations which Gen. Joffre requested me to undertake. The line extended! along the canal from Conde on the west through Mons and Blnche on the| east. "During August 22 and 23 the ad-: vance squadrons did some excellent work, some of them penetrating as far as Soignles (a town of Belgium ten miles northeast of Mons) and several encounters took place In which our troops showed to great advantage. "On Sunday, the 23rd, reports began I to come in to the effect that the enemy was commencing an attack on the Mons line, and that apparently Mons was being particularly threatened. "In view of the possibllty of my I being driven from the Mons position I had previously ordered a position in the rear to be reconnoltered. This position rested on the fortress of Mau- I beuge on the right and extended west to Jenlaln, southeast of Valenciennes on the left. The position was reported to hold because standing crops and bull41ngs made the trenches very difficult and limited the Are in many important localities. It, nevertheless, afforded a few good artillery positions.
Admits Heavy Losses.
"The 19th infantry brigade, whichl had been guarding the line of communlcatlon, was brought by rail to Valenciennes on the 22nd and 23rd. On the morning of the 24th, they were moved out to a position south of Quarouble. to support the left flank of the Second corps. With the assistance of cavalry, Sir Horace Smith Dorrien was enabled to effect his retreat to a new position, although having two corps of the enemy on his front and one threatening! his flank. He suffered great losses In doing so. "The French Were still retiring and 11 had no support, except euch as was afforded by the fortress of Maubeuge, and I determined efforts of the enemy to get around my flank assured me that it was his intention to hem me against that place and surround me. "I felt that not a moment must be lost In retiring to another position. I had every reason to believe that the enemy's forces were somewhat ex-1 hausted and I knew that they had suffered heavy losses. I hoped, therefore, hK- pursuit would not be too vigorous *ne effecting my object. The ope* ivever, was full of danger and not only owing to the very supt.. forces in my front, but also exhaustion of the troops. "By about six in the afternoon, the I second corps had got Into position with their right on Le Cateau, their left in the neighborhood of Caudry, and the line of defense was continued thence by the 4th division toward Seranvilles.
During the fighting on the 24th and 25th, the cavalry became a good deal I scattered, but by early morning of the 26th, Gen. Allenby had succeeded in concentrating two brigades to the south of Cambrai."
ARGENTINE BEEP CORNERED.
Packers Hold Control of Imports, Witnesses Say. NEW YORK, Sept. 10.—Beef packers of the United States are now in absolute control of the Argentine output of. beef, thus destroying the value of Argentine beef as a competitive check on I the price of native beef, according to testimony given before Chief Magistrate McAdoo, at the inquiry into the adva ce of food prices. Jacob Blouch, member of a firm owning several meat markets In this city, asserted that every bit of beef from Argentina must now be bought from the American packers.
As an Instance of how this control Influenced the price, the witness stated that at one time, beef hearts could be bought for 26c each* When the American packers obtained control of the Argentine output, he continued, beef hearts were put into cold storage, thus diminishing the supply, so that today the cost of these hearts is about $1.50 each.
HELD UP BY FLOODS.
T- Cullen, of this city, who was enroute home from a visit to the Pacific coast, stopped over In Ottawa, Kansas, for a brief visit and is marooned there by high waters, the result of the cloudburst in Kansas City, which did so much damage there. He writes that Kansas has had unprecedented crops of both wheat and corn, and that there is not room in the elevators to accommodate the wheat.

Developments
The latest and most novel feature this season is the long clinging line resembling a Moyen Age notion, with the skirt fuller and enveloping, which is particularly becoming.
Sashes remain popular, and broad hip sashes crossed in an original fashion mark many of the new evening robes.
Broad ribbed velours delaine in brilliant green and the new artillery blue compose many smart suits. Skirts are charming. The fullness is displayed in pleats or half tunics, arranged from becoming hip empiecements, which add a charming line to the figure.
A novel notion in many of the basqued coats is the graduating length and short open front which displays the basque in a cascaded fullness. This idea gives much grace and charm of line to the figure.
In very fine underwear the envelope chemise is preferred by many women to muslin "combinations" and fine hand embroidery is again to be worn on all garments, under and outer.
The store is rich in its new Autumn merchandise-^ new fashions, new tissues, new accessories, new gloves, new shoes, new furnishings—all are opening up. Come in and see. (To be continued.)
