THE FIRST DAY OF OFFICE WORK OPENS NEW FIELDS TO PECrGY.
1 was pleased when she dis-

covered that the work required of her in father's office was not of an especially arduous na-
1 ture. She has been given a desk all to herself and a nice new pen and the work for the most part Is addressing envelopes. This was fun, because Peggy has always liked to write and Is rather vain of her writing.
The first fifteen envelopes or so she had done with the most exquisite care when it occurred to her that here was a capital chance to practice and improve her penmanship. She had always admired the tall, fashionable scrawl she had seen on Dorothy Johnson's letters and planned to cultivate it. The next twenty envelopes were addressed more fashionably than legibly. This diversion, though, soon lost Its fascination and Peggy looked about for some other interest.
Miss Clarke, Peggy is thinking, would do well to reconsider her manner of doing her hair. Some girls look very cute with their hair done that way, but it really doesn't become Miss Clarke at all.
It is easy to see, Peggy muses, that

Miss Clarke is anxious to Impress young Mr. Kelly. She beams and flutters whenever he goes by. If he speaks to her with a modest show of gallantry or directs to her the slightest pleasantry, she seems delighted. "Her taste isn't mine," reflects Peggy as she turns to view the young man at his work. "Goodness, wouldn't an evening with him be a rollicking affa.ir? He looks about as thrilling as a rainy holiday."
Peggy, however, is underrating the modest and subdued Mr. Kelly. His failure to array himself In rubber-soled shoes and boisterous cravats perhaps explains Peggy's indlfTerent estimation. You may learn another day, Peggy, that many earnest young men abjure the gay apparel when they enter the business world. Of course it's too bad, but its mostly because of the way employers feel about it.
At this point a glorious idea occurs to Peggy, revealing possibilities of many moments of amusement. Why not simulate a real liking for Mr. Kelly, thus disturbing the gentle Miss Clarke? The shade of a cruel little smile plays about Peggy's lips.
Office work, thinks Peggy, will be great fun after alL (Continued.)
