Red Star Liner Has Great Difficulty in Leaving the Harbor At Antwerp.
YORK, Aug. 19.—Homing
Americans, baggageless, fortuneless, but glad to get out of Europe, lined the rails of the Red Star liner Finland as she steamed in the harbor today after a voyage from Antwerp and Dover. All told, the liner brought 1,082 persons, 252 in tho first cabin, 235 in the second and 615 in the steerage. The Finland experienced great difficulty in getting out of the harbor at Antwerp. The channel buoys were not lighted and mines were everywhere. To make matters worse, a Norwelgian steamer, accidently sunk by a mine—a fact heretofore reported by cable—obstructed the main channel. To meet the situation, the Finland lightened her ballast tanks and took a small and less frequently used channel, finally getting away on August. S.
At Dover, 150 passengers were embarked, a majority of them bedragglec Americans "who had fled the# continent Passing down the English channel tht liner was repeatedly stopped by British men of war, although she flies the American flag. After clearing Land? End, the voyage was without incident until the liner was stopped by a British cruiser of Nantucket Light- Another cruiser met her off Ambroee Channel lightship, at the entrance of New York harbor.
