BUSINESS MEN TOED TO HUSTLE FOR TRAD!

Senator Shively Explains Situation Arising From Declaration of Contraband Gtoods.

"WASHINGTON, Aug. 8.—"I am in receipt of telegrams from a large number of manufacturing establishments in Indiana, saying that they have opportunities to sell their products for export, but are in doubt as to what is contraband of war and what is not, and. therefore, not clear as to what their course should be," said Senator Shively today. "I have been in consultation this forenoon with the authorities and I am sending out telegrams to the inquiring manufacturers to the effect that they should sell anything they have to sell to anybody willing to purchase it that it is not for them to decide what is contraband of war and what is not that the purchasing agent or the purchasers will take the risk."

Other members of the senate were In receipt today of telegrams from manufacturing constituents of the same Import as those that oame to the Indiana senator. The telegrams, it la pointed out, indicate that the foreign demand for American products, both of the farm and of the factory, has set in. The expectation is that it will grow In volume.

Buyers Already Busy.

The fact that the purchasing agents of exporters are already in the market indicates that the exporters are convinced that it will not be many days until the ocean avenues of trade will be reopened. Indeed, it was pointed out today, the situation on the Atlantic ocean is now such that cargoes may be moved with reasonable safety.

In the meantime buyers are in the dark as to prices and the market is unsettled. It is eatimated that the outbreak of war in Europe added $100,000,000 to the value of the American wheat crop by the recent rise in prices, but the sudden cessation of shipments and the breaking down of foreign exchange on the other hand depressed prices. At the same time the demand for grain was never greater than now. Great Britain, which imported 200,000,000 bushels of our wheat last year will double that demand this year, It is estimated, if the war continues. It is known that there is now in England hardly wheat enough to keep the mills grinding two months, though there is a large supply of flour there.

Pass Registry Bill.

The government, is now doing everything it can to restore commercial communication between the grain fields of the west and the consumers in Europe. Secretary McAdoo today expressed firmly his belief that the passage of the pending registry bill by the congress would go far to relieve the situation. He said that he had no particular plan in mind and that It was for the masters of transportation and the foreign exchange bankers to suggest the remedy.

It is not expected that there will be any trouble if vessels under American registry can be obtained. There is no idea of sending grain fleets to the other side under convoy of a war vessel. That is not regarded as necessary.

TERRE HAUTEANS IN WAR TERRITORY

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8—The state department has undertaken to And Mrs. Benjamin Harrison, of IndianapoliB, who, with her daughter, Elizabeth, and Miss Mary Herod, is supposed to be somewhere in Germany. The cutting of the German cable is making it difficult for the department to carry out the wishes of the relatives of the Americans in the German empire. At the request of Senator Kern the department is also trying to find Miss Blanche Noel, of Indianapolis, who is supposed to be in Paris.

Among other Indiana people about whom inquiries are being made are Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Finch and Miss Gertrude Ixigan, of Terre Haute, who, when last heard from, were at Schwetzingen,

Baden Germany ,and Henry

W. Furniss and his father, William H. Furniss, of Indianapolis, who, when last heard from, were traveling In Germany. Mr. Furniss formerly was minister to Haiti.

The Miss Logan mentioned ie a nieca of Mr. A. C. Keifer, of Terre Haute, and Mrs. C. L- Finch is Mr. L. E. Menard's mother. The Finches make their home in Berlin

MORGAN STTEPEISES FRIENDS.

Thursday Ed Morgan, employed in the city engineer's office, laid off and did not work. Nothing was thought of this, but Friday when Morgan did not appear it was then thought he was sick. Saturday he failed to show up, and an investigation proved that he had been married Wednesday night. No amount of persuasion could pry the details out of the benedict.

OPEN AIR SERVICES.

Services which have been held In the grove at Lafayette and Carl avenues for several weeks past will be continued this week under the direction of Rev. Oglesby. Today Retv. Sparks will preach at 3 o'clock, Rev. Oglesby in the morning at 11 o'clock and evening at 7:30. Good crowds are attending the meetings.

HOG PRICES ADVANCE.

EAST ST. LOUIS, 111., Aug. 8.—The record price for hogs for the year was reached here today when $9.90 a hundred was bid. This was an increase of $1.30 since Tuesday. Light shipments the last few days and an unexpected demand from European governments are given as the reason for the rise.
