The subject of Dr. Mark's sermon at Centenary Church Sunday morning was "The Voice of God." He took as hi9 text that oft recurring passage in the scriptures, "The word of the Lord came" Speaking on this theme, he said in part: "Our text suggests that in times past, the word of the Lord came to His servants directing them in the path in which they should gb. The vital question to us today is as to whether or not the voice of God can be heard today as then and, if so, what is the manner in which it is heard. "Many and various have been the channels through which God has been supposed to speak to men. Anciently, he was supposed to voice His commands through visions and dreams. Occasionally a combination of circumstance or chance happenings were supposed to serve as the method of Com

munication. High development of character considered as an exemplification of good, either legitimate or freakish, is another way in which some people seem to think that God speaks. "Coming to later times, we note that the voice of the conscience is supposed by some to be the voice of God. Likewise, that the Sentiment of the mass of the people is taken in the same way. So much so that some claim 'Vox populi, vox dei,' that is, the voice of the people is the voice of God. "Still another class, having in mind the organized expression of religious life, look to the utterances of the church to And the best symbol of the divine voice"While all those more or less may be considered to have their bearing upon the question, yet neither of them taken separately, or all taken together, would not fully serve as articulate expressions of the divine voice. If we fail to recognize the fact that God speaks to man today in the same terms as He has always used, the spiritual intellect that is kept open to receive the highest impression, the soul that lives with its windows open toward the divine sunlight, the life that has all of Its faculties strengthened by divine impressions, these all, though it may be in an imperfect way, represent the highest inspiration from God. Attendance for Quarter at Central Christian Averages 770. An average attendance of 770 at the Sunday school of the Central Christian church was reported Sunday as the record for the second quarter. The contributions averaged $188 each Sunday and there was an average of fourteen new members each Sunday. This is the best record the school has ever reported. More than 500 were present at the school Sunday.

Combined services of the Central Christian church and the Central Presbyterian church were held at the Central Presbyterian church in the evening. The Rev. George Darsle, pastor of the Christian church, preached. Next Sunday the union meeting will be held in the Christian church and the Rev. L. O. Richmond, pp«*tor of the Presbyterian church, will .ach. The Rev. Darsle took as his text, "Paul in a Dilemma." He said: "It is a rare Instance in the life of Paul when he is pictured In Philipplans 1:23, 'in a strait betwixt two.' Paul was a man of singleness of aim he never flinched. His motto was: 'This one thing I do.' What was it that caused him to grow panicky? Wherein lay his dilemma? He wanted to go with Christ. He Wanted to lay aside the burdens, toils and battles of life and hear 'well done.' He was also conscious he was needed longer here. Heaven beckoned on one hand, duty on the other. "This was the Strait, but he soon settled it. His heart was too noble to viaoirefer his own to others&t gnd. „iie satlsiaction-etc reasonauiv. prices. New Pbone, 796-L. AMERICANS IN EUROPE WILL 8E CARED FOR

Secretary Bryan Reassures Public That Government Will Look After These in Distress.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3.—Reassuring evidence was given by Secretary Bryan today that all Americans in distress in Europe for lack of money or for means to return home would be assisted by the United States government. The secretary had been advised that bankers who usually serve the state department abroad would accept checks Issued by authority of the United States through its diplomatic representatlves abroad. This is one of the steps in the department's plans to! afford relief to the thousands of stranded Americans abroad who had: found It practically impossible to cash checks or letters of credit because of the financial stringency resulting from the European war.
