BIG CONIES!
Chuiboat Smith and Georges Carpentier, Strong for Boiled-Shirt Stuff, Scrap Thursday.
NEW YORK, July 10.—In London a week from Thursday Gunboat Smith will try to land with his dreamland unch on some vital point on the anatomy of Georges Carpentler, French heavyweight, who is champion ot Burope.
It will be a clash of social lions, Carpentler being the Idol of France. Smith has become a society bug and holds receptions In London now and then, arrayed in full evening dress. Carpentler, as referee, appeared at the recent lamented Parisian sparring party daintily arrayed in white flannels.
Fight fans everywhere are more skeptical thaji ever, since the Paris affair, regarding the possibilities of another real honest to heaven championship light, and they are wondering already whether the next big scrap will be a mere social event or a regular fight.
Johnson's lack of the old stuff, as demonstrated in the Moran fight, has centered attention on Gunboat Smith. The American fighter, although he fell for the boiled-shirt stuff, and was a social lion in London, Is reported to be In excellent shape and to have been only mildly affected by the demoralizing Influence of sooiety life. According to all accounts, Smith will be something of a rough customer when he climbs through the ropes to face the Frenchman.
Smith founfi Langford easy picking and mauled Moran unmercifully In their San Francisco fight.
So the Gunboat has the sentiment of these United States behind him strong as the leading whlte-hoper, and a white-hoper who, If he can swing the matches, should take both Carpentler and Johnson Into camp within the next few months.
