Improvement Rushed Through In Record Time—Work Being Hurried Throughout City.
Work on the Improvement of Ohio jetreet from Second to Ninth-and-One-I Half streets was completed Friday night 'aihd the street was thrown open to the pubic last night. The improvement of this street has set a record for street 'improvement in Terre Haute. Active work was begun on the street a little more than a week ago and now it Is 4n first-dags' condition. The work was done by the Andrews Paving company, of Hamilton, O.
College avenue also begins to take bn the semblance of an improved street and, according to the officials of the Neil & David Construction company, three more weeks will see the foundation completely laid. The street is being improved from First to Twentyfifth streets and represents one of the most extensive improvements conjtracted for by the present adminlstration.
Already the street has been improved to Thirteenth and two concrete mixers are busily at work completing the foundation. This street, when com|pleted, will be known as a reinforced macadam street.
Work on all the other improvements I are progressing rapidly, according to Harry S. Montgomery, president of the board of works.
The city engineer's force Is busy (preparing the work for the contractors land it is thought when the time comes [for preparing the assessment rolls on 'the various streets, it will be necessary to do night work at the office.
After Mayor Roberts' return from Washington, he was consulted by a jnumber of farmers anrl complimented 'on the part he had played in procuring the eleven new paved roads in Harrison township.
Bids for the improvement of North Seventh street, between the two railroads, and also Tippecanoe street, west of Seventh, were taken under advisement Saturday by President Montgomery.

Continued from Page On*
after a very busy week in the "provinces"—meaning the congressional districts where several big organization meetings were held.
While there Is nothing to warrant the statement that the progressives are going to carry the state, the sire of the organization meetings and the interest manifested was anything but pleasing to tt'e republicans. Chairman Hays called together the republican committee this week for the purpose of taking an inventory of the situation and to arrange, if possible, to offset the work of the progressives, which undoubtedly has given the republican leaders much alanft.
The progressives are going to have a much better organization than they did two years ago. Whatever may be the oondltion of the party in other states, Beveridge is putting a lot of pepper Into It in Indiana. He is going right to the men in the precincts, urging them to organize and to continue the light.
The progressives arel elated at the size of the organization meetings and at the determination of the crowds to hear Beveridge. His meetings have been very large ini view of the fact that the campaign is not to be opened until September. The indications are that his personal followers among the republicans are going to stick with him as they did two years ago when they practically disrupted the republican organization.
Some Figures.
The situation is anything but pleasant to the republicans, who are trying very hard to get started back to the position they held a few years ago. Beveridge is confident that the progressive ticket will receive more votes than it did two years ago. The republicans are counting on at least ten per cent of the progressive vote. James E. Watson has estimated that the progressives will cast 75,000 votes.
If they get that many the republicans can not win, as the state normally is very close—or rather was very close between the two old parties prior to the split among the republicans. It will be recalled that the democrats carried the state in 1908 by nearly 15,000 and that they did as well in 1910 when there was no such thing as a progressive party. So if the progressives cast 75,000 votes in 1914 it is not dfficult to figure where it will land the republicans.
The democrats are not taking any deep interest in the fight between the progressives and the republicans for second place.
Beveridge Making Hay.
Even if Roosevelt does not come to Indiana to make speeches for the progressives, Beveridge feels that they will be in good shape. He Is telling the progressives that he brings a personal message from Mr. Roosevelt and there is no alarm among the bull moosers over the absence of their intrepid leader, the great explorer. Bevoridge refers to Roosevelt as "Our president in 1916," and the allusion provokes a lot of enthusiasm except in the Goodrich, Watson, Hemenway districts. Whenever Beveridge hears of a bull mooser backsliding Into the ranks of the republicans he finds out the whys and wherefores and usually refers to the case in a speech much to the great glee of the progressives.
Reports from various parts of the state show that the amount of interest in the proposed constitutional convention is not encouraging. The women's federation has taken up the matter and has worked up some interest in the plan for a constitutional convention in conjunction with the "votes for women" movement
