SECRETARY CHAMBERLAIN ADDRESSES BOERS AT NATAL.

DECLARES THE WAR HAD TO BE

*fi

Now Since It is All Over He Asks the Boers to Accept His Hand in Good Will.

DURBAN, Natal, Dec. 27.—Colonial Secretary Chamberlain and Mrs. Oha-m-berlain landed at 10:30 o'clock, and were greeted by enormous and enthusiastic crowds.

Replying to an address of welcome, Mr. Chamberlain said the object of his mission was twofold. In the first place, lie wished to express, on behalf of the king and the government., sympathy with fellow-subjects and a desire to understand them better and cement their new relations. In the second place, he ^a-s there to gain information which could only be gained on the spot. lie snid ho deprecated the notion that by the wave of a majrie wnnd, they could settle every difficulty. Time would be needed to accomplish this end, he declared.

Mr. Chamberlain was the guest' of honor at a luncheon ..ere. Tie made ft speech, in the course of which he said that two proud kindred nations came to South Africa to stay. Between such peoples rivalry was inevitable,, and the struggle for supremacy had to be fought out. War was inevitable, and the issue had decided that the British must be paramount.

The speaker paid a. flattering tribute to the Boers, and declared that they need feel no humiliation in defeat. He added: "Let us do nothing to revive ancient animosities. We must give them equality, and ask them to. take our hand frankly. With the aid of their leaders, especially their religious leaders. we hope for reconciliation.''

Continuing, he said that he had come to South Africa in a spirit of conciliation and also in a spirit of firmness. The sacrifices that had been, made must not be (iirown away. He hoped that selfgovernment for the new colonies would Soon eome, but there could be no great-1 mistake than to hasten this prematurely.

Local Foundry and Iron Works Will Enlarge the Scope of Its Business.

Owing to a desire to increase their capacity, in order that they may better take care of the large trade which is almost swamping them, the Eagle Iron company yesterday incorporated, with .lacob A. Parker. George W. Parker and Amos L. H'elining named as directors.

The Engle Iron, company is one of the oldest corporations in the city. It was founded by Joseph 5 rover nearly sixty years ago. and was bought in 1870 by !acob A. Parker from W. ,1. Ball & Collie owners at that time. Under the. efficient management of Mr. Parker and his son George W. Parker, the plant, has continued to prosper until it can no longer carry on the business given it with its present restricted facilities. The •company emivlovs about fifty mien, and is enaraged mostly in making mining machinery, but as soon as arrangements can be made it is the purpose of the concern to commcnce manufacturing other articles.

HAVE YOU ANY OF THESE.

Symptoms of a Very Common Trouble? There is no disease so common in the United States as catarrh because it appears in so many forms and1 attacks so many different organs.

It is a common mistake to suppose that catarrh is confined to the nose and throat. Any inflammation of the mucous membrane wherever located accompanied by abnormal secrctions, is catarrh. Catarrh of stomach or bladder, or intestines is nearly as common as nasal catarrh and much more serious, although it is true that stomach catarrh and catarrh of other internal organs is the result of neglected nasal catarrh.

A new remedy hns recently appeared which so far a.s tested seems to be remarkably effective in promptly curing catarrh, wherever located. The preparation is sold by druggists generally under name of Stuart's Catarrh Tablets and in addition to being very palatable and convenient, possesses extraordinary merit, in many cases giving immediate relief from ihe coughing, hawking and constant, clearing of the throat and head, those symptoms with which everyone is familiar who has ever suffered from co'ds in the head and throat..

Local Company's Capacity Not Sufficient to Meet the Demand of Present Cold Snap.

Those who burn gas are complaining that the pressure is so low that they can neither get enough heat or enough light to keep them comfortable. The reason ascribed for this condition of affairs is that the present tank at the company's ivorks is not large enough and owing to the increased consumption at this time of year both in the matter of light and heat it is impossible to change from the old to flic new tank which has just been erected.

COAL TAKES A JUMP.

Peoria in the dutches of a Local Trust Which is Squeezing the Consumer. PEORIA, 111., I)cc. 2J.—The local coaJ trust today boosted prices, and they are now higher than ever before in the history of this city, except when an emergency existed. The new scale makes ,cqjd in lots of forty bushels or over 12 cents, per mishel twenty-live fo forty bustels, 13 cents, and less than twentylive bushels, 13 cents. This is an advance from 10, 11 and 12 cents. Minerun coal was advanced 2 cents per bushel to 11 cents and hard coal was advanced 50 cents per ton to $!. Dealers assign for the advance the high prices being charged at the mines and declare that

Peoria is getting coal 2 and 3 cents a bushel less than most places. This is, however, due to the close proximity of the coal banks.

CHEAP COAL FOR THE POOR.

City of South Bend May Buy SupplySell at Cost to the People. SOUTH BEND, Ind.. Dec. 27.—The recent cold snap, right in the heart of a coal famine, has caused much distress and suffering in South Bend. For this Tea son Mayor Fogarty convened the common council in special session to consider the advisability of the city purchasing a supply and selling to consumers at the actual cost of delivery. Several factories will be compelled to shut down unless the situation is relieved at once, thus causing further distress. The mayor was authorized to see if the supply could be secured. Busines men and manufacturers will be asked to request the railroad companies to give coal preference over all other freight shipments until the famine is relieved.

TRUST COMPANY'S PLANS.

Prjce of the Baur Property Which Has Been Bought by the New Corporation.

The United States Trust company has perfected the deal whereby it came into the possession of the Baur property on Wabash avenue. The price at which the land was purchased was $000 per foot.

The Baur property, which has for some time been talked of as the probable site of the new company's business, was yesterday transferred by the owners, Jacob Baur of Chicago, Miss Blanche Baur of this city. Twenty-seven thousand fivo hundred dollars was the pMce paid, and reckoning the worth of the building to be $7,500, this makes the valuation set upon the property $600

It has not been finally decided yet whether the company will erect a new building or remodel the old one. I11 either case, however, the offices will be as fine as those of any banking institution in the s'tate.

Positive Because Negro Who Killed Officer Hinkle Used His Own Weapon in tlwWork.

JOPLIN, Mo., lec. 27.—It is reported here today by several .Joplin citizens, who have returned from Pittsburg, that Montgomery Godlev, the negro lynched by a mob there yesterday, was an innocent man, and that the

real

murderer

of Policeman Milton Hinkle escaped. Dr. G. W. Miller, a well-known Joplin physician, who returned from there tonight, says that he knows from authentic sources that Godley, the negro lynched was the wrong man. The officers admit that Godley was not the man who committed the deed. He had been arrested not. because he shot Milton Hinkle, but because he was implicated in the disturbance that the officer was attempting to quell. According to the press dispatches from Pittsburg, Godley snatched the officer's own pistol from its holster and fired the fatal shot. This report is untrue, acording to the statement of the police officials. The negro who fired the shot tljat killed Hinkle used his own pistol. He immediately made his escape and lias not ben captured.
