CIGAR MAKERS ACTIVE
PREPARE TO REPULSE THE INVASION BY THE TRUST.
LATTER IS CUTTING PRICES
Selling Leaders Eight for a Quarter %•. nnd Use Label to Cloak Their Methods.
i" The Cigarniakers' union throughout the country has actively taken up the work the fight against the trust, and in ninny of the cities the union is working in conjunction with the independent retail dealers. The result, so far, has been a more activc demand for imionmsde. goods, and while the trust in reported to be willing to spend any sum of money to gain control of the trade, the international union is sanguine that the final result will not be altogether against it.
George W. Perkins, president of the International Cigarniakevs' union, has compiled a partial report of the number of trust factories and the number of employes, which, shows that there were P.841 employes. Of these, the report shows that a large proportion were women and girls. The report shows (lint in many of the factories there are employed a few instructors, and that the cigars .are largely made by machine. In many of the factories it is found that the child labor laws are ignored. These conditions, however, do not otain to as great an extent in the shops of Florida where the trust controls the trade, as it does in the northern states. The employes in the Florida factories are, as a rule. Cubans, and number about 1,100 persons.
President Perkins says that the trust has in many instances placed on sale a line of union-made goods as a cloak, hut he warns the- membership not to be deceived by such a policy. He also says (hat negotiations are pending for the absorption by the trust of several of the large independent factories that have been active, in opposition to the trust's methods. He advocates that the cigarmakers put forth renewed efforts in the endeavor to organize both the workers in ^hat industry and among workingmen in general, and concludes that this is the only method by which it will be possible to ligat encroachments on the union.
Tn furtherance of this plan C'igarmakers' union No. 3.3, has actively begun the campaign for a more general demand for blue label goods. Much money has ben spent in literature and advertising of the label, and organized labor in generl is coming to the assistance of the cigarmakers. Nearly all of the local unions have made it a finable offertse for their member# to smoke any other than union made goods, and the same course will be pursued in furthering the demand for union made chewing tobacco.
A number of Indianapolis retail tobacconists, who, as a rule, handle trustmade goods, have begun making a drive on five-cent cigars. Seven are being, sold for a quarter and one retailer is giving eight for 25 cents.
The dealers explain that they are not losing money on the cut. They say, the trust, has made concessions and) cuts in wholesale prices •which, has lowered the pi-ice on some of their leaders from $35 to $28 a thousand. The retailers are retailing this line of gods at sevenaor eight for a quarter because they can sell more of them and consequently draw more trade to their peaces without losing money.

ignorance
Blows out the gas and furnishes the newspapers with a jest and an obituary notice. "Didn't know it was loaded" may be. an honest plea, but it never brought a victim back to life. Those who let a cough run on, in ignorance of the danger, find no escape from the consequences when the cough develops into lung trouble.
The best time to kill a snake is in the egg. The best time to cure a cough is when it starts. Ordinarily, a few doses of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery will cure a cough at the beginning. But even when the cough is deepseated, the lungs bleed and the body is wasted by emaciation, Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery will in ninety-eight cases out of every hundred effect a perfect and permanent cure.
My husband had been coughing for years and people franbiy told rue that he would go into consumption," writes Mrs. John Shirematl, of No.
265 25th
Place, Chicago, 111. "He had such terri
ble coughing spells we not only grew much alarmed but looked for the bursting of a bloodvessel or a hemorrhage at most any time. After three days' coughing he was too Weak to cross the room. The doctor did him no good. I stated the case to a druggist, who handed me a bottle of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. My husbands recovery was remarkable. In three days after he began using Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery he was up and around, and in two more days he went to work. Two bottles cured him."

MISS BIGGA'R DENIES.
Life
Answers Questions as to Past Into Which Attorneys are Delving. n-""
FREEHOLD. N. J., Dec. 23—When the trial of Miss Laura Bigger, the actress accused with Dr. Hendricks and ex-Jus-tice of the Peace Stanton with conspiring to illegally obtain the estate of Millionaire Bennett, was resumed this morning, Miss Bigger was recalled to thcstand. She looked wan and nervous and said she was feeling very ill.
Miss Biggars testimony this morning consisted in the main of wholesale denial of the charges against her. The prosecution opened their fire of questions by asking the actress why she had shown Margaret Roach, a servant, an alleged certificate of her marriage to Bennett, if she claimed, she wished to keep the mar riage a secret. Miss Biggar replied that the servant expressed a d'isbelief in her statement that she was married to Bennett, and that she (Miss Biggar) wished to prove her statement. This was followed up by a question as to why she had run an account at her grocers under tho name if she did not want it generally known that she was married. Miss Biggar said the account had been started by the first Mrs. Bennett and had continued under that name.
Prosecutor Foster then turned to the accused's private life and asked her if it was not true that she had at one time shared an apartment with a Dr. Irwin, in the Victoria hotel, Pittsburg. Miss Biggar said she had not.

MR.CARPE NTER'S PLACE
PRESIDENT OF THE C. & E. I. GOES TO PERE MARQUETTE.
WILL LOCATE SOON IN DETROIT
Railroad Man Well Known Here Leaves the Chicago Line for a Better Position.
Myron J. Carpenter, who has been president of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois road for the last ten years, has resigned to accept the position of vice president and general manager of the Pere Marquette system. Mr. Carpenter was notified of his selection today, but the date of his change has not been settled. He will however, assume the duties of the new position, probably with headquarters in Detroit, as soon as arrangements can be made to dispense with his services on the Eastern Illinois.
It was asserted by those who ought to know that Mr. Carpenter's retirement from the presidency of the Eastern Illinois is not d*ue to the change in ownership of that road but solely to the fact that a better position was offered him by the owners of the Pere Marquetta system. So far as known, there was no purpose of entirely merging the East ern Illinois with the Frisco system, as regards management, and the officials of the latter property have expressed a sincere regret over the loss of-Mr. Carpenter.
It is not known whether a successor to President Carpenter will be appointed. but it is rumored that the remaining executive offioos will in the near future be merged in the general offices of the Frisco system, whale the officials of thef reight and traffic departments of the Eastern Illinois will be retained. This change tends to confirm the statement that the swndicate which recently obtained control of the Pere Marquette will eventually be operated for and! in connection with the Frisco.
Such being the fact the importance of the Frisco system would be greatly enhanced, as it would have lines extending from the extreme Southwest to Detroit. and soon to Buffalo, and would thereby assume the importance of a transcontinental trunk line.
