INVE.N" CITY.
gOr^ETHJNG OF THE
*IiOJXGNA, Dec. 19.—This is the home ciiy of William Marconi and it is full the associations with his early study and ox|en!ients. Here live his mother and.fathw and brother, and here, after an. absence of years, during which ho •gained world-distinction, was he accord- I ed 51 reception never surpassed) in the "history of the city. The story of Mar•Potii's,'achievements and his patient, tonne ious endeavor which made them possible, is not new, "but the scenes in which he ''imoVed while working out the preat proh}em are comparatively unknown to the .great world outside. vv. •jhwejity-eiarht years aeo in a house ad'joining the Marescalchi Palace and facinfr its garden, the inventor first saw light. Many of his bioernphers locate his birth-place in the Alberpiti Palace in ',Sara, gpzm street, but this is the place where his mother was living1 while yet a. girl and where the family has been living for the last six months.

"jr&eph Marconi, the father, is ha.le and K&irty in his sixty-ninth year, a man of /cordial temperament and tmfnilinff jrood '^atwlre. His first wife was a Miss Kfenc.'i. and of this union was Louis Mnreoni, who ha-s sensed his city as council-
vfaari:.
The mother passed away soon after he. was born. Several years Inter, the elder Marconi met and fell in love with Miss Anna .Jameson, a pretty, keenwit.ted young Trish ?irl. and the marrinpe ,}sop» followed. There were bom two eliildren—Alnhonse in 1805, and Wil'inm Jn 1 S74. While yet a boy, the Renter opart, of William's time was spent in the jifountry. but in the winter a month or two in Florence or Leghorn, where be 'went thivnuHi hi* elementary studies. The reception recently given to 'liim "by this eify in the Arehwrvmna-sium was rerharknble for two facts—the presence of the M^reo«i fe^ilv. nnd the me*»t.ing£ of Afpreoni and liis old friend and nrecentor. Professor Tlisrhi.
The father of the inventor, who is well nigh an octogenarian, but alert and ^turdy, was visibly affected by the sight jlof his boy bein,? cheered and feted in his home city. His joy radiated from his iruddy countenance and sparkling eyes.
It Avas with modest pride that' he told -the writer how his Guglielmo had* been received at Racconigi and how King
Victor Emanuel conversed with him ah jenjtire day on wireless telesranhy. Mrs. Marconi was not less gratified or affected than, her husband, but her emotions ,wjpre better concealed by her English repose. Forty years of married life have deft' her still youthful and ordinarily no one w6uid suspect that this stylishly 'ghwiied, smiling matron was the mother •of one of the world's famous men, save for the strong resemblance between them. £"ity officials and savants greeted Marconi and proclaimed his achievements.
And. the pale-faced young man with a thoughtful, half-fatigued expression, answ^rcd. His hand trembled ns he held his win" glass, and his voice, alike, was ItH^teady at first. He is not an orator, bu+Va man who says what he wishes to Cypress in a few words. He speaks his native tontnie with a marked foreign decent, and fully conscious of this fact he said that de.spite it he felt himself to be an Ttalinn and a "Bolosmese and proud of it. His word* were simple end sincere. He addiresserl Professor "RiVhi wiutiua him as an illustrious scientist ivhflsVrcsearehes had been of srreet avail ^o him. The assemblage was deeply stirred when the venerable scientist at the Conclusion of his address, pressed his former pupil to his brea.gt and kissed him on both cheeks. There was more talk on the future of wireless telegraphy, and the immediate development to which Marconi is bending his energies.
He looks to America for the greatest utility of his invention, a country i^hose great wealth arid magical development in industry and science makes it the very home of all that is new and beneficial to mankind. There, too, has been supplied the capital to carry out h!s groat work on such a scale as to realiefe all of its Vast possibilities. Marconi Wireless Tefepraph company of America, which controls all of the rights for the United States. Cuba. Porto Rico. Hawaii and the Philippines, has a capital of $*v 500.000. Brftins and energy ate tlie elements which reveal great truths and accomplish magical results but money, •with the activities it commands, is the force that makes monuments to scientific truths. .Thus, with the great station at Glace Ray, Cape Breton, the similar installation at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a gigantic central point soon to be established on the Pacific coast, at San Francisco, .Cali., and the coming installations fiJMMfing t.h« islands -of the Caribbean the Gulf of Mexico, Marconi

The system of wireless telegraphy wliich he derived from Hertz's classical experiments is the most pleasing transference to the field of practical industry of those instruments and principles which have seemed to be relegated to the domain of natural philosophy. It is to the credit of Marconi that h6 has once more proved how much those are error who regard with disdainful or indifferent eyes the work carried on continuously in the silence of the laboratory by the modest and disinterested scientific students, and who only appreciate science in proportion to the. immediate uses that can be obtained from it."
