Tugged and Strained at the Hip of a Five Year Old Girl, But Said Coryditions Were Unfavorable.

BAl/TIMORS, Md., Dec. 9—Dr. Adolpih Lorenz, t.h« Austrian aurgical expert, during his? clinic ut Johns Hopkins hospital yesterday, operated upon the worst caee he ha3 encountered, in this country, according to.his own statement.

The delicate little patient was May Lehman, aged

!y:2

years Jlighter of a

policeman. Congenital hip dislocation was the trouble. The operation wits not satisfactory. Although the famous surgeon, it could be seen was exerting his greatest strength and skill, the ease was A*yery hard proposition for him. Many lra^liirg physicians and a large number of''women, mostly students in nursing, Sirenihiessly watched the operation.

After pulling and straining at the muscles of the right leg of the little patient with all his great strength, ami until it seemed as though the hip would snap every moment Dr. Lorenz said: i'/We will use the femur as a probe ancl ascertain the condition of the socket."

A sort of rotary motion was resorted to persistently. Dr. Lorenz shook his head, and said: "Conditions are very unfavorable. Instead of a well formed socket, there are .'several rings, like the step of. a stair."

The puny frame was laid on a cruelbooking block. After, stretching the muscles. Dr. Lorenz brought the limb down wards its. old position. "ty is a bad case," lie said, "the worst fiave encountered in this country."

The block fulcrum was brought in play and the combined strength of the two big surgeons (Dr. Mueller, assistant, jfimd Dr. Lorenz) was used to work the .head o.f the femur farther into the hip •socket. To the laymen it seemed like the horrible torture of the rack, although, of course, the child could not feci it. The poor little pulsating body Was turned this wuy and that and alth'^gh the manipulation was careful, one- "vvondered how the vitality of so -tender a child could resist such awful fetmiu. ,, Tho operation lasted three-quarters of an heur. Dr. Lorenz said that while it was a bad case some good miarht re-f-:.i!t. After operating more successfully mi another child, he declined a third declaring lie was exhausted after 3iis great effort. He then started for

Using Catarrh Medicines. Catarrh is the short route to consumption, and tho importance of early and ^judicious 'treatment of catarrh, whether |.loeat'?d in the' head, throat or bronchial '.tubes, cajniot b,e, too strongly empliacizccV.

The list of catarrh cures is as long as the moral law and the forms in which -they are administered, numerous and confusing, from sprays, inhalers, washes, ointments, and salves to powders, liquids and tablets.

The tablet form is undoubtedly the toost convenient and most eft'eeUve but With nearly all advertised catarrh remedies it is almost entirely a matter of puess work as to what you are taking into your system, as tho proprietors, while making all sorts of claims as to what their medicines will do. always keep it o. close secret as to what they are., •_... •''.

The success and popularity of (he new catarrh cure. Stuart's Catarrh Tablets, is largely because it not only cures catarrh but because catarrh sufferers who used these tablets know what they •?re takiiyr into their systems. Stuart's •ytarrh Tablets bein.o- composed of Red mm, Blood Root and similar valuable ind antiseptic incredients. aiid are pleasInt to the taste and being dissolved in "he mouth they take immediate effect ipon the mucous lining of the throat, msfil passages and whole respiratory raet.

The cures that, Stuart's Catarrh Tabeta have accomplished in old chronic ases of catarrh are little short of ren:»kable and the advantage of knowing 'hot you are putting into your stomach 5 of paramount importance when it is ememberrd that, the cocaine or roorliine habit has been frequently contractas the result of using secret catarrh cmedies.

Stuart's Catarrh Tablets meet with "rdial approval from physicians, because ie.ir antiseptic character render them erfcctly safe for the general public to I so and their composition makes them common sense cure for all forms of tarrhal troubles. ^1 druggists sell thfeW at'^50 cents" f&r 11 sized packages.

PARIS, ILL., NEWS.

Mrs. Cyrus O'Betz has been quite sick for several d«ys past. The King's sons and daughters of the M. E. church realized about $ I (JO from the bazaar conducted in Armory hall on Friday and Saturday of last week.

There has been little change in the broom corn market in the last few weeks, the prices ranging from about $70 to $85. The market is not considered very active.

An extra session the city council was Isold on ?JOIK!-M-of

a number of matters which were carried over from the regular December session laat Monday.

County court convened on Monday and /.after a brief, .session adjourned until January 12th in order that the business might not conflict with that of the circuit court which is not in session.

Edward Wright and Miss Ora VViikm both residents of Vermillion, eloped last week and were married at Mattoon. tT is said that the groom's parents objected to the match,, this being the reason for the elopment.

The new M. E. church will be used for the first time on Thursday of this week the Ladies Aid society will meet in the basement. Sunday school and church scrvice will also probably be held in the ba.semcnt next Sunday.

The Mission service, which has been' conducted at St. Mary's church by Rev. Prs. O'Connor and Mulconry, two Jesuit missionaries, for a week past, closed on Sunday evening and during the present week services will be conducted at St. Aloysius church in Hunter township nortliea&t of the city.

Mrs. Margaret Swan, a resident of East Washington street, received a letter one day last week in which the writer threatened to blow up the residence with dynamite. Some time ago the residence was bombarded- with bricks and it is thought the same person was the instigator in each case. The last matter has been referred to the postal authorities and a secret service officer will probably be detailed on the case.

Miss Cora Grimm, nineteen-year-old orphan eirl of Oakland, who made her borne with Mr. and Mrs. John G-. Crawford met a horrible death on Monday. While passing an open grate her clothing caught fire and before she was aware of the fact the flames were leaping up about her head. Before help was attracted by h?r cries every bit of clothing except her shoes were burned from her body and she died within a few minutes.

The fire department was called out on Sunday morning by the burning out of a flue on Springfield street, the damage being slight.

The criminal case in which Ellis Weant is charged with criminally assaulting Mrs. Pearl Albin is being tried before a jury in the circuit court and a yefdict will probably be returned, today. The Edgar township blackmailing cases in which a number of prominent Edgar county citizens are named as defendants will be tried this week. The civil suits were settled out of court, the defendants paying to Wm. Whitted, the amount which he claimed they had defrauded him out of. TliiB fact will be used as evidence in the criminal proceedings and things look pretty blue for the defense.

Neighbors on North Fourteenth Street Are Having Trouble—Poly Students Help Out.

More trouble seems to. be brewing for the Fieillys and Bundys, two families living siile by side on North Fourteenth street, near Chase. Miss Alice Fischer, who comes to the Grand on December 15 and 16, unde'r the direction of Mr. lienry B. Harris, has been voted by New York theater-goer^ the "merriest of mirtli-mak^rs," because of the liveliness and spontaneity with which she invests the title role in the "Mrs.Grace Livingston Furniss comedy of "Mrs. Jack." which, because of its crisp, crackling dialogue, clever character sketches and clever interpreting cast, has recently concluded a run of 100 night? in that city divided between Wallack's and the Victoria theaters. "Mrs. Jack" is a capital entertainment enlivened with fun of a novel sort arising from the manner in which Mrs. Jack, a generous, whole-souled, breezy Western widow accomplishes the self-imposed task of carrying out the benefactions begun by her late husband during his riotous career These live legacies assume the form of an ex-pugilist, a barn-storming tragedian, nnd his companions and a humble relation, Mr. Jack's little Irish aunt, a quaint little figure who contributes many tenderly humorous touches to the play.
