The managers of a road have no control over the actions of a aingle person they employ, farther than to discharge nim after he has been culpably negligent of duty. We think there ehoafd be a law enacted for the protection of passengers from the carelessness of employee, making them personally responsible, by line and imprisonment,

RAILROAD MATTCRA. —The Krle Railroad has ordered thirty new locomotives from Patterson manufac-

turers.

—The Danville Railroad Is to cross the Wabash at Clinton, and the contract for hallding the bridge has been awarded. —The Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad Company have .declared the first regular quart«rly dividend of one and three-quarters pef cent. —When the Paris and Constantinople Railroad la completed, which will be in about five years, the passage between the two cities may be made in sixty hours, it Is said. In a straight line these cities sre about 1,400 miles apart, but the road will doubtless be 2,000 miles long. —The railway from London to Brighton la to have steel rails over one hundred poands to the yard, so aa to have a bead of tbs width of tbs tresd of the wheels, snd to distribute the weight^of the rolling stock so as to obtain lesa than the present weight per wheel, and thus

preserve the way.

Louisvillk, Xkw Albany and Chicago Railway.—lu a recent trtp over the New Albany Railroad we noticed that aome very substantial improvements had been made upon it. A large portion of the track has been laid with Iron entirely new, and at each joist, blocks of wood have t>een placed, which prevents tbe usual wear of tbe ralle at the ends, and iifkke the cars run much more smoothly. Other portions of the track are laid with the broken joint, which Improvement la also a saving to the road and a comfort to the traveler. The road is now in excellent running order, and will compare favorably with any in the coonlry.—La-

fayetle Journal.

—I,., M. A B. R. R.—Adams Karl. Esq.. President, of the Lafayette, Muncie and Bloomington railroad company, accompanied by Chief Engineer K. M. Talbott; made a trip over the route between this city and Muncie, last we/k. The survey Is progressing favorably, and being actively pushed forward. The survey party have reached a point some forty milts from this city, and about twelve from Tipton. Although the country Is apparently qnlte level, there Is an ascent after leaving the high table land eaat of Lafayette. The r >ute and tbe country through which It will pass were found mnch more favorable than had been anticipated, In almost every respect. The money, It will t># borne In mind, has been all voted, jsxeept In two townships In Madison county,

_ _ good, so far as

the road is concerned, as though It bad been appropriated from the county treasury. The work will be pushed vigorously to completion.—Lafayette Courier. Ihos Railway Coaches.—Since the Mast Hope disaster, by which a number of lives were lost by the burning of a wrecked railway train, the subject of subatltuiiog iron coaches in place ot wooden onai on railways Is being agitated. There seems no good reason why iron cars should not supersede wooden ones, unless the rack and strain of constant travel may be too great for the coherence ot tbe metal. Tbe advantages of such rolling stock would certainly seem to be grest. The Iron oars would have strength, lightness, and cheapness of construction. Tbe weight saved In each car would be from five to eight tons, and much less fuel would be required to ran them. But tbe probable saving of human life Is the con* •dderation which most of all commends them to approval. Iron cars could not burn, and would bend rather than break when thrown from an embankment. Greater security on railroads is more Imperatively demanded than ever at a time when the great competing lines to the West are Increasing the speed of the express trains to something like the rapidity of transit on the English roads. —The Cincinnati Gatette, speaking of the great railroad bridge over the Ohio river at Louisville, which will connect the railway systems of the North and Month, says: There is one obstacle now In the way of the greateet suooeaa of this railway link; the two connecting roads are of different gauges, but this will soon be remedied. This will allow the palace and also freight oars to run from New York to New Orleans without change. The completion of this bridge at the falls of the Ohio must be an Important step In tbe movements now In progress to gain, if not the control, yet a fajr share pf the Southern business. At present a part of ibis Is taken by tbe Illinois roads, a part drops Into tbe Evansville and Crawfordsville Hoad—it will be larger soon—a large part must toll to tbe roads that connect no this Louisville bridge, and still another, and also an Important share, will fail to tbe new route from Chattanooga to Cincinnati. At present It Is evident that this Louisville bridge, now so near completion, must gain tor that route from the

Southwest to the East

where the requisite amount

guaranteed by large pr thereof, making It just

„ _ coQimapding •bare of both freight and travel. This fact la enhanced by tbe completion of the

first class cut-off road by tbe Jefferson Railroad from its main track via Colum»>ua to Cambridge City, where It loins the great Pan Handle Trunk for Pittsburg

over the Pennsylvania Central.
