KAILRUAD HATTEB4. —Thorn in prospect of war between the principnl trunklines about railway far ea, hnd some agents are predicting tut ten dollars will be the rate from New York to (.'hie ago, and proportionately to other

points.

— Mr. Thomas Green, condnctor on the 7?nion I’acilic Railroad, met with bis death on tiie 24th,while on his train. It appears that two men had endeavored to Imat their wav on the train, when Mr. Uroen ordered them olT at Bitter Creek. Pearing that they would again attempt to get on the train Mr. Oreen kept leaning too far over the platform when he was struck on the head while passing over the bridge. —A few days since a suit was brought against a conductor on the Long Island Railroad by Mr. James W, Merritt, of Ulan- Cove, Long Island, involving the value of a return excursion ticket. Mr. Merritt bought the ticket and went to New York, nut did not return till the next day , and when he offered his ticket which p^ts dated having on it “good for this day only the conductor “punched” it, and handed it back, tolling him it was worthless, and demanded his lair. Mr. Merritt refused to pay, and was ejected from the cars at Queens. The case came to trial after two postponements, and was decided againts the conductor, who had to pay costs, about 1160, and the value of the ticket fifty cents. Mr. Merritt is about to begin a suit^nthp Supreme Court for damages for having been put off the train. The conductor has appealed, and t he case will probably be tried at the next County Court in Queens county. —The Cairo Bulletin says: “Captain D. Hurt, ouo of the directors of the Cairo and Vincennes Kailroad Company, after an absence of about five weeks, returned from New York yeeterday evening. He brings the gratifying assurance that the work on the road will go forward uninterruptedly to an early completion, a contract to the end having been concluded with the Pennsylvania Central, one of the wealthiest and most influential railroad companies In the United States. The terms have all been settled upon, and the

papers only President of

only await the signature of the the Pennsylvania Central

(whose presence In New ’York Is looked lor h.uriv) to close the arrangements naily. The Pennsylvania Central will thus form her great southern countct one through Cairo—a consummation our citizens have most earnestly wished for. If, now, we can secure here her round houses and repair shops , foundries, etc., as by proper elforts we may, intervals of business prostration, like Die present, will he known no more among us. Captain Holliday, General Rsnm and Colonel .Smith Hie still in New York, but will start borne the moment the terms agreed upon are ratified by the signature of the President

of the Pennsylvania Central.
